Big things are expected of OKS ILB transfer Mason Cobb this season
Cobb will represent USC, along with Caleb Williams, at the Pac-12 Media Day this Friday. And yes, both wear #13.
Lincoln Riley said early on that Cobb “has a unique fire about him,” regarding his leadership ability. “Without a doubt, you feel it when he’s on the field.”
“That guy was born to play inside linebacker,” USC ILB coach Brian Odom said of Cobb after a spring practice. “His movements are exactly what you want as an inside linebacker. He’s quick, he’s got a lot of twitch to him. He’s very physical and he’s extremely competitive.”
“I grew up nasty, always fighting,” is how the second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2022 describes himself. “That’s how I play.”
“It was really the presence I could bring to the defense,” Cobb said of the recruiting pitch USC coaches gave him when he entered the transfer portal. “They said there was a gap in the defense and someone needed to bring them together.”
Cobb says his stature as the youngest of six brothers prepared him for his current role as a starting USC ILB. “I was seven years younger than the closest one and I was always trying to fight those older brothers. It’s always been about competition for me.”
“He’s different,” Trojan DL commit Deyvid Palepale said of his Cobb observations during his campus visit.

San Diego State to remain in Mountain West after walking back initial plans to withdraw It remains unclear where SDS intended to go after announcing intentions to leave the Mountain West last month. Ryan Young (Yahoo Sports) — The Mountain West informed SDS that it can remain a member of the conference Tuesday, sources told Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, ending a complicated battle between the two in recent weeks. SDS will have to cover legal fees the conference incurred while working through the school’s potential withdrawal from the conference as a result. The Mountain West held a board of directors meeting… Read more »
The media’s Preseason All-Pac-12 Team — 10 Trojans
Projecting College Football’s 2023 Preseason Top 25 Before Fall Camp B/R — The order is subjective but focused on the initial AP Top 25, not how rankings will look at the season’s end. 1. Georgia Bulldogs — The back-to-back national champions. Any questions? No? Good. 2. Michigan Wolverines — In two years, Jim Harbaugh has morphed from a disappointment at his alma mater to a two-time Big Ten champion. Headlined by QB J.J. McCarthy and RBs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, the Wolverines are a strong contender for another CFP trip. 3. Alabama Crimson Tide — Nick Saban’s high standards… Read more »
Ed’s Facebook profile
Is that his wife, or does he have a new one? As always, roguishly handsome will get the girl. An alpha male in a world of cucked betas….
“IF” the ring on the Lady’s finger (5-7 carat) is real $25-40K she has found her Sugar Daddy. I just wonder if Eddy still whips up his daily pot of roux…in Luzzana everything starts with roux…of course excepting Iced Tea !
Thought coked out O just liked the college girls
That gold digger looks 40ish
Do you believe Ed O will eventually land another HC job at a Power 5 school?
Um….good question. It seems lately his shelf life has shortened. Now to answer your question
’Only if the Stars Align’
Ed O is “happy with my life of leisure after working 5 am to 11 pm all those years. I’m done with that,” and considers himself fully retired from coaching at the age of 61 (almost 62), loaded with more cash than most of us could ever imagine. Ed’s one of the most energetic and enthusiastic workers I’ve ever encountered. So we’ll see about that retirement pledge. Whatever comes his way after his massive personal crash landing at LSU after winning a NC with that awesome 2019 team led by QB Joe Burrow, he’s the most incredible recruiter the college… Read more »
I would love to see him back at USC as a “Saban Rehab Project” type role. He’s my favorite coach since Marv Goux….
Yeah, that’s pretty good guess …. Probably A ‘D’ Cup
I love medical technology….
a bit harsh on Coach O, don’t you think?😕
One of the best, most phenomenal young people I ever knew at USC, and an iconic figure in American tennis, was Dave Borelli, who recently died, cause unannounced. Dave and I graduated together and lost touch after school, but I’ll always remember him as an exceptionally talented, smart and friendly person who blew us all away when he became USC’s most successful women’s tennis coach by far — winning national titles in ’77, ’78, ’79, ’80, ’81, ’83 and ’85, once winning 88 straight home matches. During his career at USC, Borelli posted an amazing 302-45 record (.870). He was… Read more »
What do you think will be a success for the D in game one? I’m going with 17 or less points. I predict we score 50+. So they will get the ball a bunch of times with our 2nd string unit in the game.
The defense will look good this season. We should know about how good it is in about 40 days. If the first game of the season looks like a college vs. a high school, we will have a decent year with a few close calls. If that games looks like a college vs. a Pop Warner team, then we are on the right track.
Either way I expect both sides of the ball to look different this season.
The D had better look different! Obviously it will the new guys up front and Cobb already make it better. A lot of good qbs in the Pac again, plus ND qb is good.
You sound like you’re a little concerned. Probably smart. But I’m not impressed with ND, or their newbie coach, either. I think he’s in over his head, probably because ND actually lost to horrible STAN last season in South Bend. That takes some doing. And, the Pac is filled with crappy teams like always (CAL, STAN, ASU, ARIZ, CU) and USC gets UTAH and UW in the Coliseum. I’m not sold on ORE this season either, though that game will surely be a challenge. UCLA seems meh, like usual. USC will be favored to win the Pac by the writers… Read more »
Always concerned about road games … especially at ND and at Oregon, where I see a Utah type F over coming.
This team is not losing to Utah, they play like crap on the road (which could get them beat by 40 at USC) and Udub is getting a lot of hype but qb is kind of a chuck it up type.
Yes, this could be an amazing season. Hard to believe it took LR one year to make USC a power again. What a football coach!
Ya, LR is so good, he takes a lot of heat for not being perfect — especially from our competitors. As you say, it’s hard to believe he’s done so much for USC football, in so little time. He’s earned every dime and more of what he has been paid. It’s also hard to believe he’s not even 40 yet. ND and ORE are, of course, the two crucial games I want to win the most, followed closely by UCLA. But by the time the Bruins roll around, I’d probably sell my soul for yet another victory (of any size!)… Read more »
Rialto, I am not willing to go so far as to state the D will look good this season. I hope it does, but we will need to see it play out. What I can say is that, as this article states, the talent on the D has been significantly upgraded. The worst unit on last year’s team was the DL. The talent and depth have been significantly upgraded. Least talented position was NT, and that position has been restocked with two significantly better players. The second worst unit on last year’ team was the LBs. The ILB had one… Read more »
