USC faces Washington needing more than Alex Grinch’s accountability
The No. 5 Huskies arrive with QB Michael Penix Jr. as the latest test for the No. 20 Trojans’ scuffling defense
Luca Evans/Mirjam Swanson (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — For five minutes straight, Alex Grinch propped up a verbal Trojan sword and flung himself on it, taking a fall repeatedly in the span of three questions Tuesday.
Some comments from USC’s defensive coordinator, taking such accountability, were necessary and refreshing after another haunted house of a defensive performance against Cal – 527 total yards and seven touchdowns surrendered. Some, though, came unprompted, another self-impaling instead of simply walking away: “We had a play today – you weren’t there for it,” Grinch smiled after practice Tuesday, “but you’d be ripping me right now for that.”
Grinch, by this point nine weeks in, is clearly aware of the pressure on his defense. Excessively aware. Statements of oh-so-close positivity he’s echoed from film-watching throughout the season – “just a play away” – have worn thin on ears of USC’s fanbase, and the coordinator seems to know it after his squad has given up an average of 42.6 points in the past five games.
“You look at all those things,” Grinch said, “and you make sure as best you can – you accept blame.”
He’s handled the pressure, linebacker Mason Cobb said, “like a champ.” And in a time when college kids could crumble under the weight of national ridicule, Grinch commended them for sticking it out – no hint of momentum on their side Saturday, no reason to fight, and yet they emerged with a win.
It’s continued to build trust with Grinch, senior captain Shane Lee said, even through turmoil, a coordinator continuously throwing himself in front of public fire and bullets to try to galvanize his unit.
“Trying to, kind of, shock and awe the guys a little bit,” Grinch said Tuesday, when asked about an early-game tirade where he was visibly slapping the turf in a sideline huddle with players.
Making himself the scapegoat, though, can only go so far. Grinch is not solely responsible, plain and simple, for countless strange tackling angles that have turned five yards into 20, or gaps in run defense going consistently uncovered. Players, multiple times this season, have emerged from Grinch’s public security blanket to shoulder responsibility: Guys “aren’t trusting themselves,” Cobb said Tuesday.
“We just got a risk-reward type of thing … with our defense, a lot of times, where a guy is not doing the job, or not going to the right place, and that’s how the explosive (plays) happen,” linebacker Eric Gentry said Tuesday.
Reward has been there – USC’s defense is ranked third in the FBS in tackles for loss – but risk has reigned, with quarterbacks too often threading through collapsing pockets and finding receivers open due to poor coverage technique.
And for USC (7-2, 5-1 Pac-12), ranked No. 20 in the initial College Football Playoff poll, to keep its Pac-12 title hopes alive Saturday, it will need a much healthier balance of reward against fifth-ranked Washington (8-0, 5-0) and an offense sparkling with playmakers that should present one of the more entertaining games of the college football season.
USC before its game against Cal on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, in Berkeley, has given up an average of 42.6 points in its past five games going into Saturday’s home showdown against Washington. (AP/Jed Jacobsohn)
Munchap GA, Leonard WI, Gibson NC St. Fire 🔥 the Grinch who stole our defense.
Step 1 is now complete.
One step in right direction. Only big question is making sure that next hire is a legit upgrade. I’m hoping for Munchap GA, Minter Mich, Leonard WI, or Gibson NC St. Parker IA back burner. If Aranana is willing to leave Baylor’s HC job for a DC job which I highly doubt I think that’s for front move for SC.
No need to even discuss what’s going to happen next week in Eugene Oregon….could be Chocolate Chip makes these last games a trifecta
at Grinch’ expense. Last season seems as a dream.
Given that Grinch is incompetent. IMO we lost this game when Riley let Caleb start to play sandlot football. That first drive was perfect. Short passes, mixed with some runs. Grind the clock and keep Dub O off the field. 6 minutes were used to score. When you have only one (Bear) capable DL at or over 300 pounds with no possible rotation your defense is going to get blasted if you play quick. Even the clock was not being drained. Caleb was snapping it with 16 seconds or more left. The recruiting effort the first year was understandable, I… Read more »
We lost for the same reason we loose to every formidable team. We don’t make stops when we need to. Sure I’ll give them a pass recruiting the 1st year, but what did you get last year that is any improvement over year 1. We said we made improvements. What improvements have been made on defense. Same sample as last year when you look at the margin of points given up. We have one of the best offenses in the country and your telling me that you can’t even put a middle of the road defense on the field in… Read more »
I think we agree…..I’am saying the best way to paper over this mess was to run a more deliberate offense…..aside from that yep!
Keep trying to bail Grinch out, and then it goes to the players executing…lol Players respond and respond to someone who commands discipline, respect, and mental toughness. Saying that it is players and being out of position in coverage’s is a coaching and an accountability issue!! Again it’s culture and unless it’s changed at the core by bringing in a DC to help Riley you can expect more games giving up 256 yards and 4 td’s on the ground. You are not going to win very many college games without stopping the run🤷♀️.
Well, when we looked at the season in August, we had winnable games in the first half plus Cal and tough games in the second half. USC is 7-0 in the winnable games and those were closer than expected, and now 0-3 in the tough games with two to go. Not good. Next week will look like South Bend and then some.
Worse than SB … more like 2009 when Pete basically said I’m done with college football and these crazy Os. LR going 0-5 in these big games is embarrassing. Two should had been won.
Coach Prime made a change this week with the offensive play calling. Maybe LR would do the same on defense? It couldn’t be any worse.
I am new to the blog so you may not have seen what I said in my first post. JIM LEONHARD. Someone in the hierarchy please contact him ASAP. This guy is a real defensive coach.
There are many potential good options to replace Grinch, but Leonard is not coming!
I hope they contact Gary Patterson, the analyst at Texas, and successful head coach at TCU.
Grinch absolutely blows, and should be kicked to the curb. And please have him take Donte Williams with him.
Knowles OSU, Minter Michigan, Munchak Schumann Georgia, Diaz PSU, House LSU. Jeff Fisher, Jack Del Rio, Ken Norton Jr.
Not Jack DR but would love to see Ken Norton
Just watched LR’s post game press conference and he didn’t want to say anything about firing Alex Grinch. Reporters tried to get him to say something but he didn’t budge.
Not sure what they think he would say. No coach ever would say something like that in a post game press conference. Grinch is gone for certain. Will it be now or end of year?
LR would not fire Grinch right on the spot. He may soon but not the night of a loss. I am sure he would want to let his friend exit with some dignity so he could find work elsewhere. If Jen has not been part of the conversation I would bet she sure is now, of her own doing.
Is there any truth to any of these rumors? 1. More than one Big 10 coach has offered to fund the extension of Alex Grinch’s contract. 2.Traveler has offered his droppings for sale to a pitchfork wielding mob, the proceeds to go to the buyout of contracts. 3. United Airlines wants the TSA to hold Alex Grinch on the tarmac after next week’s game. Otherwise they want their name removed from the field. 4. Tee shirt makers are asking Dr.Seuss ‘s family for permission to make a shirt with Alex portrayed in green with the words “Stopping Christmas Bowls while… Read more »
You notice LR won’t stand next to Grinch on the sidelines? Not when there are TV cameras focusing on Grinch.
Don’t stand so, don’t stand so, don’t stand so close to me.
Fun game for 3+ quarters but in the end Grinch loses another. If he isn’t fired on November 19/20th. LR is done as USC HC.
Nah. That’s a bit extreme. What if he fires him on the 21st?
😂
Look at how far back the backers & DBs go when it is .3rd & 10 on the SC 30 and Penix just flips the ball to receiver and runs 10 yards before a Trojan gets to him. You think that isn’t all coaching?
Hey LR forget about the tarmac, fire Grinch on the sidelines.
Grinch stuck on this 3-man front is not working.
Beautiful TD catch by Rice and CW puts it right where the ball needed to be. Now it’s an even game
LOL ….Are there some TV Executives saying “Are we sure we want to put the USC vs ORE game on TV …..Anywhere ?????”
The whole nation will watch it
One thing watching LR and USC AIN’T >>>>> Fun ……………..
Grinch is an embarrassment
CW loses the ball scrambling in the pocket and holding onto the ball 1-handed. What happens? Yep Fumble
What was the hurry there? They couldn’t stop anything and we drop back
Perfect time for draw or just run it
Run it? What a novel idea. SC running the ball often would be shocking, a welcome change to LR’s predictable throw on 1st and be surprised by the following 2nd & 10 or 1st & 20.
The players are young men that need to be coached every play. Complex pass routes and convoluted defense schemes are worthless, as we’ve seen, unless the fundamentals are practiced, like tackling would be good to practice. This is a team overflowing with talented players but being “led” by a play caller, not by a coach.
Captain Obvious here, but our D is too weak, small and slow, and our DC is too incompetent. I’m dog tired of every week having a player from the opposing offense have a career night. I saw no adjustments, but maybe that’s just my untrained eyes. What I did see was 3 rushing and 8 dropping into way too deep coverage all night long. Never even made Penix wonder where pressure might come from. All we have left is to play spoiler to the ducks (good luck with that), and to break the little gutties heart once again (but you… Read more »
7-6 …Grinch has reached Kiffy Suckisian level of hate for USC coaches
UDUB on the 4-yard line and Grinch has a 3-man line. Just insane
Herbstreet taking the SC defense apart for poor tackling in addition to dropping too many defenders back and getting lost or confused. That my friend is a total coaching decision and mistake.,
I generally don’t care for Herbsteet, mostly because he is such a tosu Homer that he can’t hide the giddiness in his voice when he’s broadcasting the tree-nuts games, but if his criticism contributes to the demise of Grinch, then I’ll give him a 1 game pass.
we don’t need Herbie’s input to know how F ing bad Grinch is
let him go Kiss his boy Suckisian’s Ass
What was #1thinkingbthe receiver run by him and getting the ball on 4th down?????
Grinch get out of that damn 3-man line, Penix is picking you apart!
Hey the game is over
he Must be at the game and the posts are rolling in just now?
Funny, he has been out of sinc all game.
Used it twice on goaline F Grinch
Caleb carried USC tonight, he put up a great performance in spite of the defense.
He outperformed Penix in all phases except the final score.
It was the ground game that beat USC’s defense.
Oregon just hung 63 on CAL. You know they are going to try to score more on us and they likely will.
Caleb looks crushed.
He may be but he showed what a great Qb he is tonight.
Couple of extremely costly plays, but he gave it his all and was the only reason we were even in the game.
We are what we are. Lincoln has to think of next year and fire Grinch now. Save a recruiting class as best he can. Next week will most likely be really bad, I don’t even care. Just get it going in the right direction right now.
We were told by LR we had a championship team. Hello 7-5 and more than likely even worse next year. If LR can not bring himself to fire his friends then he is not the coach for USC.
I gotta agree ….I know the “He brings a certain culture to a program ” chatter but we AIN’T paying him what we are paying him to be a 7-5 program .
Beautiful play to score the SC TD. Had Wash. completely fooled!
We have to fire Grinch
What really concerns me now …..My family has a decades old tradition …They stay away from me …For Days ….When UCLA beats USC . And I do not know if this SC Team will beat ORE or UCLA .
Save you the time. USC will not win either game. As a matter of fact there will be an offensive player on both teams to have a career night, and both teams will enter a new name for the Heisman race because of the game they have against USC.
2 home losses in a row since 2021
The crowd is chanting “Lets go Alex”
It’s pretty obvious that you can’t transfer yourself to line success…..a few yes…..but Helton left it totally empty.
Why are we running?
It was fun for a while guys. This one is over if they aren’t trying to score.
I don’t see any substituting going on in Defense. Are we going to see. Spent Trojan D-Line in the 4th quarter?
Hey Jam, the game is over
Caleb has moments but is really inconsistent the last 4 games
Where was he inconsistent tonight?
The only time he was inconsistent for the last two passes, because he was absolutely wiped out and had no more energy. He left everything on the field.
Overthrows of guys open, going deep (incomplete) when there was a guy wide open much closer, he holds the ball way too long thinking he can always run away ( and look at INTs and sacks now)
Our offense can’t score enough to keep up with the defense give aways.
The left side of the D-line gets blown out and the Wash RB runs to a TD. Well another cheap score for the opponent!
score quickly
We Really Suck!!!
Will take a quick score and onside kick to get back into this.
I started watching (and rooting ) for USC around mid-sixties (50 yrs plus). But a USC Defense being this bad ? …… Is this that worse I have ever seen ……Could Be !!!!!!!!!!
Everytime the D-line stands at the LOS, they get pushed back.
How do you build a defense that will be much better for next season?
Good news. It won’t get worse.
Not with these defensive players.
This is Helton tackling all that money spent on a genius and he kept the obvious problem on staff. He is right behind Lynn Swann for infamy
We needed the D to step up and they failed miserably. Grinch has to go.
300+ yards rushing. Lol. Opposing teams should be paying grinch.
Very little left to say. Except…goodby Alex Grinch
In addition to Grinch, Donte, LB coach and OLine coach need to go.
