USC football at Maryland: Who has the edge?
What’s at stake, injuries, who’s better, matchup to watch, TV info and prediction for Saturday’s Big Ten game
3-3 (1-3) USC at MARYLAND 3-3 (0-3)
Saturday, 1 p.m. PT, SECU Stadium, College Park, Md., FS1/710 AM
Current Line: USC by 7½
Luca Evans (OC Register)Â —Â Notable injuries
USC:Â OUT: LB Eric Gentry (concussions, season), DL Anthony Lucas (leg, season), DL Bear Alexander (redshirt, season); QUESTIONABLE: TE Lake McRee (leg), TE Walker Lyons (undisclosed), DL Gavin Meyer (undisclosed), CB Jacobe Covington (undisclosed)
Maryland:Â N/A
What’s at stake? It’s outlandish to say, but maybe Lincoln Riley’s reputation in the eyes of USC’s fans? USC’s once-ballyhooed head coach is 5-8 in his last 13 games coaching the Trojans, and a host of impatient fans – despite a roughly 0% chance he’s removed – have turned up the fire under his seat. To Riley’s credit, he’s largely faced criticism head-on after a tough overtime loss last Saturday to Penn State, emphasizing any of the program’s struggles fall on his shoulders.
That wouldn’t quite be a good look, though, if USC flies across the country and is promptly stifled by Maryland, similar to how Minnesota tested the Trojans a couple of weeks back. A loss this weekend would seal a 3-4 record, a continued slide at the bottom of the Big Ten standings and an ever-intensifying conversation about the future of the program under Riley that can’t be wiped away by good locker-room vibrations.
Who’s better? USC. But this Maryland team shouldn’t be underestimated, by any measure. These Terrapins handedly beat a decent Virginia (4-2) program, are hardly afraid to air it out, and boast a secondary prone to big plays.
Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. ranks fifth in the country and first in the Big Ten in completions through six games (156, and has hit on 68% of his attempts). Wide receiver Tai Felton is in the midst of a true breakout campaign, ranking fourth in the country in yards (719). USC is more multifaceted on offense and boasts more playmaking depth on defense, but season-ending injuries to Gentry and Lucas hurt here, with the Trojans suddenly forced to rely on a swath of young talent for key reps Saturday.
Matchup to watch: USC’s secondary and cornerbacks vs. the Edwards Jr.-Felton connection. USC was just shredded a week ago by Penn State tight end Tyler Warren in a record-breaking performance – 17 catches for 228 yards – and now will face another receiver who carries a large burden of his program’s offensive output. If Covington is cleared after missing last week’s game against Penn State, that will help; more widely, this will serve as a test for defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn and secondary coach Doug Belk’s ability to shut down the focal point of a passing game.
USC wins if: The pass-rush can generate any sort of pressure on a porous set of Maryland tackles and make Edwards Jr. uncomfortable … true freshmen like Desman Stephens II and Kameryn Fountain step up in likely increased snaps … Miller Moss plays mistake-free against an aggressive Maryland secondary.
Prediction: USC 38, Maryland 24. USC desperately needs to rediscover consistent offensive rhythm and finish games behind Riley. Here’s betting it happens in College Park.

So we are half way through another forgettable season and we have already caused two opposing fan bases to rush the field due to beating us. Well, LR is successful at lifting other fanbase’s up.
Not a defense of Helton, that guy took shit show to new heights. But when you break everything down LR has the same personal deficiencies as Helton does, he just gets paid extremely more. Helton gets blamed for leaving the cupboard bare, but LR has decided he doesn’t have to built a team with local relationships at the high school level (I am starting to believe he is incapable of that because he has no personality), instead to buy a team year after year from the portal. LR best offensive line at USC was thanks to Helton (LR first year).… Read more »
He has a ton of issues but your comment about personality is the one that I cannot understand. How did anyone doing due diligence sign a guy that gives a crap about people relationships for a head coaching job.
Anyone expecting that long term a coach can run a major blue blood program without creating relationships is off base.
Blinded by that OU record … which is quite impressive if not a miracle seeing what we see now. LR can’t even beat F ing Maryland, Maryland who lost to Nwestern by 30 last week at home lol Minnesota was bad enough but this one wow … and the ease in which this soon to be fired Maryland staff did it. 4 for 6 on 4th down while our genius can’t get just one 1st down to win the a game. Love the empty backfield on key 3rd and 5 as your sub right tackle comes in … a green… Read more »
No excuse to lose another game to a average team, in the last minute.
I am done with Riley. I no he won’t get fired( for a couple of years anyway) but could maybe the NFL bail us out? Yeah, I guess no chance that happens.
Pathetic loss. We might not win another game.
No, his stock is plunging like it was the 1930s. No NFL team would touch him right now.
Average team … terrible team two choices cut him loose and hire Lynn( he has nothing on that D no talent ) or do a Texas Suckisian deal and just buy talent
OK, let’s pretend we have Monopoly money…who would you want as your HC among those coaches that are active? (No crazy talk like resurrecting John McKay.) I’d support firing Riley if I thought we could replace him with my number 1 choice…Kyle Whittingham. He’s a guy: with experience (which LR lacks) who knows how to build a winning culture (which LR hasn’t) who develops players and gets the most out of his talent (which LR doesn’t) wins in all 3 phases of the game (which LR ignores 2 of 3) runs a balanced offensive attack that keeps the opposing defense… Read more »
We could always hire Clay Helton….he’s not doing bad at Georgia Southern….a little humor there……very little
Hahaha …. Lynn or Entz would be top choices. At least seen improved D, not their fault DEs whiff on perfectly called blitz.
Maybe Chris Petersen can come save us a decade too late.
I’m beginning to wonder if anyone can help us. Looks like a long season ahead.
Another defeat snatched from clutches of victory
They say they are just 14 points away from being 7-0.Even if they were 7-0 I would say that this is not a very good team. This team plays just well enough to lose be a couple of points whoever they play. If they play a mediocre team they play just mediocre enough to lose by 2 points. If they play a great team, they up their game so they can lose by 2 points.
I say the team needs to STOP with the “4 plays away from 7-0” nonsense. It’s way more than 4 plays that resulted in giving up multiple score leads in multiple games.
It’s really annoying and giving them a false sense of being better than they are. This is a serious case of “emperor’s new clothes” syndrome.
😅
Time to make some changes, in all areas.
Sure looks like everyone has Rileys offense figured out, the defenses are always one step ahead of our offense. Defense just needs depth and a couple of guys more on the line.
I think it’s more of a case that they have figured out Riley. I believe it was Penn State’s defensive coordinator who said when we look across the line, we just know they want to throw the ball that is in a nutshell even when the run is working he’s still abandons it.
LR cannot even get 1st down when needed
The proof is in our recruiting focus, positionally, geographically, and administratively. Also, this guy is too stubborn and falsely proud to make changes that the big time HC’s do routinely. Trojan fans, LR isn’t going anywhere. Price too high.
On the nose. He’s stubborn and proud. Does y believe it’s broken, just unlucky. The wheels have to fall completely off for him to make a move. Grinch is prime example.
Chris you’ve always had a positive knowledgeable position on the status of our program and it was comforting. Hopefully soon we can recover.
LR is broken …. MM is a mess LR has no clue how to win Big 10 games
Teams pick up 4th down plays like it’s nothing LR cannot even get a 1st down when needed
By the way Illinois defeats Michigan. They are 6-1. Now on to watch two football teams that have head coaches….Texas vs Georgia.
Suck after getting blown by Herbie all day … is getting schooled lol
50 yds at half
Does this mean we are now only 4 plays from being undefeated?
Just wait until you see this team in November. Oh wait, that was Helton. It’s so easy to confuse the two.
Maryland…………Jen…..if you have a clue about football……take the loss and move on…….before we start playing CAL TECH tight…….this moron does not have a clue except how to get Bohn to make a fool out of himself. No more 10 year contracts for idiots.
Maybe they can rent the Colly for pasture land if they keep this guy two more years.
I’m officially out on Riley. Stick in there as long as I could but he finds ways to lose games. Everything had to go wrong to lose and it did. This is like the 10th time that’s happened. That’s not bad luck, it’s our culture. We are officially a bad program. It stinks to admit, but it’s our reality.
Welcome aboard……don’t be fooled if he wins a few upcoming. He is a guy that just loves to cash checks……and could care less about the kids.
LR didn’t work … MM is a mess and LR cannot get a simple 1st down to wrap up games in 4 losses
Hire DC like Lynn get NFL type OC
I am beginning to believe Lincoln Riley woul lose a one ticket raffle. He really doesn’t appear to know anything but passing and everyone knows it.
When the line doesn’t open holes, like today, passing is the only thing left.
BS qb can’t run makes bad decisions throws awful pucks at worse time
HC doesn’t know what to do
Short week against Rutgers. team might quit. I hate for our team to be irrelevant
Well they are … Rutgers got drubbed at home vs bad UCLA they will embarrass SC at home
How bad does Rutgers beat us next week?
by a FG … will hang around and LR will choke it
RT Mason SUCKS!!!! He is the main reason this offense cannot throw a deep ball. I hope the kid reads this.
Expect a big recruiting hit.
we sure cam pick head coaches at SC crap!
But he’s recruiting in Georgia so stop the criticism. Not in CA.
WTF!!! Just kick it a**hole everybody knows you wouldn’t make it.
Honestly not even upset. So over this clown show.
I felt the trainwreck coming early in the 4th.
and I thought Helton was horrible…..a new low.
slant to hudson
Two games in a row blowing a two TD lead at halftime
SSDG how is Riley still employed? This is getting old.
(ignore the post on the wrong thread)
We need to fire Lincoln Riley. This coach is lame. His teams are super soft.
my god! this is horrible
Maryland’s QB is better than Moss. The kid has heart and is making plays.
Marylands coach is better than USC’s
Yep
and he is terrible
No you’re not supposed to say that. You’ll get flailing arms…..because he makes completions ( like the other team’s qb). If he can’t play with our line, then give a more elusive qb, with a good arm a chance
Tarmac LR
I’m over Lincoln Riley
many of us are over Linkin
Welcome aboard!
Left side of the line standing up and easily pushed back.
Win or lose..,..this is a complete shit show.
💯
Instead of telling offensive line to quit being a bunch of pussies and freaking block, they go for a field goal when it’s fourth and short. Lincoln is pathetic. This team is pathetic and a complete embarrassment to my school. I’m never donating another dime of this damn school.
We don’t need no crappy special teams coach! We got a crappy head coach.
horrible blocking by the line
wow. now our kicker is a head case
You can’t make this stuff up. unbelievable.
shitty spot by the ref. should have been much closer to a first down.
Remember Maryland has been in the B1G longer than USC so they get the benefit.
Do we kick it or gor for a first down?
let Linkin earn his 10 million for that decision
we have to get a couple of first downs. mary has 3 time outs left
Is this really happening? Again ?
here comes the train wreck
2024 season: LR snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
10 Year contract for this.
i missed the minnesota game, but is this how that game progressed?
Yes
Our right tackles are going to kill Moss holy hell. Why don’t we have a tight end to help block on the right side?
Riley on offense has more to work personnel wise than Lynn does on defense
again no more depth on defense. thanks recruiting
Defense is giving up. They don’t swarm to the football. The frustrating thing is Maryland really sucks. They have only beaten Villanova, Virginia and UConn this season.
This is the most erratic I think I have seen this team play this season.
are we gassed? it looks like it….
Bad travel planning?
no thumbs down, Utah, i agree.
There are those superior tackling skills
Missed tackles missed tackles missed tackles
maybe missed opportunities to win games
crappy tackling exhibited on that drive
