Washington State vs. USC Prediction: Trojans Aim to Stay Perfect Against Scrappy Cougars
Trojans hope to avoid an upset in the Coliseum against a Wazzu team they’ve historically dominated.
Kane Webb (Athlon Sports)ย —ย USC’s debut season under Lincoln Riley rolls on Saturday as the undefeated Trojans host the Washington State Cougars in prime time.
USC improved to 5-0 (3-0 in the Pac-12) with a 42-25 victory over Arizona State in a game that looked like it might be the Trojans’ first hiccup of the season. But a convincing second-half performance turned a 21-17 halftime lead into a rout. Riley and his coaching staff once again made the necessary adjustments to seize control of the game, something the Men of Troy were unable to do under former head coach Clay Helton.
Up next is an upstart Washington State team that is arguably a few plays away from being undefeated as well. Head coach Jake Dickert has done a hell of a job in his first full season at the helm, as the Cougars (4-1, 1-1) already have upset Wisconsin on the road and last week defeated California 28-9 at home. Wazzu’s only blemish thus far is a 44-41 home loss to Oregon two weeks ago in a game the Cougars led 34-22 with less than seven minutes remaining before the Ducks mounted a furious rally.
Now Dickert and Co. will try and slow down the 10th-ranked scoring offense (42.2 ppg) in the country as well as solve USC’s surprising defense, which ranks 31st in points allowed per game (19.6). The Cougars also will be trying to end a three-game losing streak to the Trojans, or at least stay closer to them. USC has outscored Wazzu 83-27 in the last two meetings.

When Washington State Has the Ball
One of the biggest things that Washington State has to avoid is turnovers. No team has won that aspect of the game against USC this season, and the final tally usually ends upย heavilyย in the Trojans’ favor. They are No. 1 in the nation for most turnovers gained (15)ย andย fewest lost (1, tied with three others). In fact, USC committed its first turnover of the season last week, becoming the last FBS team to do so.
The Cougars are certainly capable based on their record, but they aren’t an offensive juggernaut either. Oregon State seemingly had the Trojans on the ropes a couple of weeks ago, but in the end, four giveaways ended any hopes of a Beavers upset. Wazzu quarterback Cameron Ward (1; 6-2, 220), a transfer from FCS Incarnate Word, has acclimated himself well to the FBS level, completing 69 percent of his passes for 289 yards per game with 13 touchdown passes to rank third in the Pac-12 in all three categories. But he also has tossed seven interceptions, including that critical pick-six in the heartbreaking loss to Oregon, so it’s something he will have to be mindful of against a USC defense that leads the country with 12 interceptions (returning three of them for TDs).
Wazzu also will need to sustain drives to help limit the Trojans’ opportunities with the ball. Last week, the Cougars were 6-of-14 with two interceptions on third down against Cal. For the season, they are converting 39.3 percent of the time on third down, a rate that will need to increase against USC. Wazzu also ranks last in the Pac-12 in time of possession (26:27), which does not bode for its defense when you consider what damage the Trojans may be able to do if they have the ball for more than half of the game on Saturday.
When USC Has the Ball
What do you continue to say about this offense as the weeks pass? How many times can you read that the Trojans just need to keep doing what they’re doing and things will work out? Well, I do have one thing to discuss. Riley’s offense continues to improve in all categories most weeks except for one. I have no idea if the unit’s continued success came as part of a deal with Satan that involves continued struggles with penalties, but Galactus almighty they have a problem with flags.
If USC wasn’t so prolific on offense and defense, we’d see a lot more articles on this team’s discipline. If you look just at their penalties per game, you’d think this situation was manageable. The Trojans are tied for 70th in the nation in that respect at 6.6. But when you shift your gaze to penalty yards per game that’s when the narrative shifts. USC is getting docked 65 yards per game because of the yellow laundry. That ranks 95th overall โ and that’sย after showing some improvement in recent weeks.
If you want to put together a blueprint for beating the Trojans, start with converting third downs, taking care of the ball (and taking it away once or twice), and letting USC beat itself with self-inflicted mistakes and penalties. The Trojans would be wise to place more emphasis on staying disciplined and playing mistake-free ball.
Final Analysis
The Trojans get this one at home in front of a rather raucous Coliseum. The noise, the environment, and the adjustments should be more than enough for USC to have a complete game in all three phases. Washington State hasn’t enjoyed a lot of success in the Coliseum or against the Trojans in general, to be honest. USC owns a commanding 62-10-4 lead in this series and has lost just once in the last seven home games with the Cougars (2013).
The Trojans are just two weeks from their bye, and we’re about a week or so away from the first College Football Playoff rankings. Riley knows how the selection committee works, having been a benefactor of their rankings while at Oklahoma. If he’s truly positioning USC for a potential berth, expect the scoreboard and number of snaps the starters see to play more of a role moving forward. Style points do matter.
This is the type of game the Trojans need to win convincingly if they want to sell people on the idea that they’re a legitimate playoff contender. Washington State may not be ranked or a national brand, but the Cougars are a solid enough team that this matchup will resonate, especially if they somehowย pull off the upset. Fortunately for Riley and Co., this is a USC team that seems to be firing on all cylinders right now and may still have another level to reach.
Prediction: USC 46, Washington State 20

Two things I saw was receivers not catching a catchable ball, and Caleb not seeing the open receivers that would have been scores. Tuli was game ball good. Lots of guys contributed on the defense, and Dye did his usual great workhorse job. O line did pretty good, collapsed a few times, but in other times were awesome.
Bill Plaschke Column: Dorian Thompson-Robinson once again proves he’s the best college QB in L.A. “He had just passed Brett Hundley as the Bruins’ career leader in touchdown passes with 76. He had just accounted for five touchdowns in leading the Bruins to their best start in 17 years, a 6-0 record that should include a spot in the nation’s top 10. “In his latest Saturday masterpiece, he misfired on only five of 23 passes for 299 yards with four passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and just the one mistake of a late interception. “He owned the Utes, he owned the moment and… Read more ยป
Maybe bulletin board material for the USC locker room?
DTR clearly outplayed Caleb yesterday, so there is nothing news-breaking about that.
The Battle for L.A. on Nov. 19 is shaping up to be a real one, and even more anticipated than usual. UCLA’s offense is for real. USC’s defense loves to bend but doesn’t break. Barnburner City!
Beat the Utes!
off topic—-the towel wavers make it look like a high school game! lr must like it
The twin towel wavers!
Looks like Tennessee will deservingly move ahead of us in the Top Ten, and UCLA will probably make it in, but after last year, just to be considered Top Ten material is really an accomplishment at this point in the season
Hey, USC is 6-0 — and the undefeated 2022 season this far through is sitting just fine with me.
In the end, the W is all that matters, as long as you remain undefeated. It’s only when the losses sneak in, or a loss occurs because of mistakes or self-inflicted wounds, that any real growling begins.
STAN is beating ORE ST 10-7 with 4:30 to go in the 2nd Q.
Shout out to the D … #9 for catching those punts with ease especially the 1st one deep in own territory after Addison went out
And the holder ! last FG was whew
Hof19, 7-3 Mets, bases loaded 2 outs top of the 9th, are you nervous?
Game 3 tomorrow.
Just win baby … lets go steal one at Utah
The way UCLA ran on Utah today, should give us hope that Dye can do the same next week.

Hope Nelson and Lemon can bring him on board. He could be huge 2-3 yrs from now.
Bama survives …..Barely .
Alabama …Can they hang on or lose …Find out in the next 2-3 minutes .
Culture and Attitude instilled by Riley and Staff–incredible how much better it makes our guys. There is a lot of newcomers, but the veterans are completely different players in 2022 when compared to the 2021 edition.
Who’s the MVP of the game, Tuli, Mario or Travis?
I’d vote for Tuli.
I second that. He was huge tonight.
T D!
Next Saturday ? ……Time for our best performance of the season Fight On !!!!!
UTAH looked like crap today. UCLA seemed clearly better. Maybe the 2-loss Utes just aren’t that good. They didn’t show up in another big game for them as is often the case.
This past summer the LA college football writers (I read online) where more positive about SC than they where about UCLA …..Where they wrong ?
Utes are different at home … itโs a get in get the win and get the hell out
USC will still be favored, no?
thought I saw an early line SC -4 …. interesting
Really good win. Beat Utah!
Love that our defense held tough.
Did any of us predict a 6-0 start for the beginning of the Lincoln Riley era?
I think I remember a lot of Trojans thinking USC would be undefeated heading into the UTAH game, but maybe I’m wrong about that.
Uncanny how the pattern, the last three games, has been a lethargic first half with the defense giving up huge chunks of yards, to be followed by second half adjustments where the defense comes up huge, and the offense does just enough. Sustainable?
That question gets asked every week.
So far, yes. We need to hope for improvement, however.
Why are they fair catching KO’s? Clock preservation?
Last August I commented about the IMPORTANCE of October 15th…….Well it is NEXT …..Fight On !!!!!
Utah will be playing like a cornered wounded animal–desperate and vicious.
Than we GOTTA match it …..Fight On ! ….Even more important …BEAT IT …..Fight On !
They havenโt been pretty. But I like 6-0
Kick was ugly but good. Game over USC covers and wins!
Great hold !
Nice kick (considering the holder almost blew it ).
then saved it lol
Game over!
That was the perfect call there
Four down territory here. Donโt give the ball back
Dye looks like he is hurting.
Give it to Austin Powers and keep bangin’ on the Cougs.
He’s been the work horse.
At this point he can sit. He has done enough.
Speaking of holding ones breath …Those that gambled on this game (something I have not done in 40+ years ) might start breathing a little easier .
Who would have guessed, SC covers the 12.5 and SUCLA blows out Utah.
Game is not over.
Over now!
Yep
Living in NY Metro area I read LA Times (online) every so often (To keep up on SC) …..Last August they SEEMED to be hyping USC a bit more than UCLA ….Where they wrong …….Any thoughts on this Allen ?
Just like that all the way down the field
Hof19 5-2 Mets bottom of the 7th, looks like game 3 tomorrow.
I guarantee you Mets fans are STILL holding their breaths . (Its the way we are )
Hey, it’s San Diego the bigger the game the bigger the choke!
3 game series in playoffs are tough! Glad the Dodgers and the Braves got a wild card bye!
As long as we donโt do anything stupid this will probably take enough time off the clock even if we donโt score.
Defense has held tight in the 2nd half.
That’s called ‘Cougin’ it” i believe….
Lol
Long drive to close this out.
We need that.
Lucky break. Iโll take it
Canโt let Ward escape like that.
SC up by 13 will they cover?
Surprised they fair caught that one. He had a lot of room.
Twelve men on the field penalty really took the wind out of that one
7 would have been nice, but 3 is better than nothing….
Barely. USC sure looks sloppy and discombobulated. Weird. Hopefully, USC scores again and makes this look a little more convincing.
That should have been a game clinching TD drive. Those of us that need to cover the spread arenโt too happy right now
my condolences, but we may get the ball back.
That doesnโt give me the comfort level I was looking for.
Mario was wide open.
Wide open receiver in the end zone.
Offense is killing this drive with these plays.
How is that not a flag?
this is a time-killing drive.
Dye deserves the TD.
Dye is special and really dependable. Heโs the workhorse and I donโt care if there isnโt a running back rotation
Dye has earned it.
He’s a much better blocker than Austin Jones too. I still like to see Raleek Brown in there because he has that home-run ability which I would like to see explode.
When CW gets to the NFL he needs to just slide down.
