Ted Robinson (play-by-play announcer) and Yogi Roth (color commentator) will call the game. THEMES
*USC opens October play by facing its first Pac-12 South opponent of the year, traveling to Colorado for an early-in-the-day contest on Pac-12 Network (the Pac-12’s live “The Pregame” show will be on site, also).
*Last year’s meeting was cancelled due to COVID-19 issues in the USC program.
*Troy has never lost to the Buffaloes in 14 meetings.
*Both teams are looking to re-set their seasons and bounce back from double-digit losses this past weekend.
*USC WR K.D. Nixon will line up against his former team (he played 4 years with the Buffs, ranking in several CU Top 10 career lists, and he even caught a pair of TDs versus the Trojans while there). It’s also a homecoming for USC A.D. Mike Bohn, who prepped in Boulder and later was Colorado’s athletic director. *Interim head coach Donte Williams’ USC team, which suffered its first Los Angeles loss to Oregon State in 61 years on Saturday, will aim to get more consistent production from its offense and and stouter play from its defense, and also clean up its turnovers and penalties. WR Drake London leads the nation in receptions and receiving yardage, and WR Gary Bryant Jr. has emerged, too. QB Kedon Slovis is moving up the USC career passing and total offense charts. TBs Keaontay Ingram and Vavae Malepeai both are 1,000-yard career rushers; a more potent run game would help balance the Trojan offense, which has converted every red zone trip into points this season. Troy’s defense–which is averaging 2.0 takeaways a game, including getting 6 picks to date–has been susceptible to the run lately. Ss Isaiah Pola-Mao and Chase
Williams and DL Tuli Tuipulotu are USC’s top tacklers, and OLB Drake Jackson provides constant pressure in opponent backfields. Aussie P Ben Griffiths, who is averaging more than 46 yards on his boots, has at least one punt of 56 yards or more in each of his past 6 outings. PK Parker Lewis has not missed any of his
field goal or PAT attempts this season. *Colorado has dropped its last 3 games (including its Pac-12 opener at Arizona State last week) after winning its season opener. Dual-threat QB Brendon Lewis directs the Buffalo offense, which features 2020 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year TB Jarek Broussard and TB Alex Fontenot. WRs Brenden Rice and Dimitri Stanley and TE Brady Russell are the top pass catchers. CU’s defense is led by ILB Nate Landman, a 2020 All-Pac-12 first teamer who has 380 career tackles. Buff head coach Karl Dorrell played and coached across town at UCLA.
SERIES
*USC has won all 14 of its meetings with Colorado while outscoring the Buffaloes, 485-220.
*USC is 7-0 against the Buffaloes in Boulder games.
*Last year’s scheduled meeting in Los Angeles was not played because of COVID-19 issues in the USC
program.
*The teams last met in 2019 in Boulder, as WR Michael Pittman Jr. caught a pair of late touchdown passes from QB Kedon Slovis–including a 37-yard game winner with 2:15 to play–to help USC overcome a 10-point fourth quarter deficit and capture its first road win of 2019, 35-31, on a chilly (mid-40s) Friday night. USC played without its top 3 running backs and 4 defensive starters, all out with injuries. The offense went primarily with a 5-wideout formation
Buffalo to Watch: Sophomore RB Jarek Broussard
In a shortened Covid season, Colorado was successful in 2020, sparked by new head coach Karl Dorrell and Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Jarek Broussard. The Buffaloes strength is on the ground, so they’ll look to ride Broussard (and his backfield mate Alex Fontenot) early and often against the Trojans.
3 Keys to the Game
No Easy Fix
USC’s problem is clear. The Trojans need to stop the run. The solution is murky though. USC has a talented defensive line, but not a big one, having lost most of its 325-pound bodies to injury. Without natural space cloggers, DC Todd Orlando will have to scheme up run-stuffing blitzes to get his athletic front seven in the defensive backfield and off their heels which is where they were forced to play last game against Oregon State’s top-ranked offense.
Free and Easy
With Kedon Slovis at the helm, everything has appeared difficult for the USC offense this season. The quarterback is looking at a cloudy picture with pressure surrounding the pocket and tight throwing windows on the outside. However, both OC Graham Harrell and Slovis were encouraged by the first half display last week and the quarterback thinks the offensive rhythm will improve “if we go play loose and play fast.”
Good Timing
The Trojans desperately need a win, having put themselves in a two-game hole already in the Pac-12 South. Given USC’s defensive deficiencies last week, Colorado is the right opponent on paper. The Buffaloes rank 128th in the nation in total offense out of 130 teams. Of course, the Trojans cannot afford to take any opponent lightly, but if they protect the ball and force the Buffaloes to drive long fields, USC’s considerable firepower should ultimately win the day.
USC-COLORADO CONNECTIONS
*USC has 1 player from Colorado (OL Joe Bryson of Rock Canyon HS and Colorado Mesa), while the Buffaloes have 33 Californians on their roster.
*USC WR K.D. Nixon played 4 seasons (2017-20) at Colorado, where he caught 104 passes for 1,250 yards with 7 TDs while starting 23 times and he also returned 33 kickoffs for a 23.0 average. He ranks in CU’s alltime Top 20 in receptions, receiving yards, kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage.
*USC ILB Clyde Moore originally signed with Colorado out of high school and participated in the first week of 2018 fall camp with the Buffs, but he did not enroll full-time in school and left the team for personal/family reasons.
*USC TE Josh Falo’s brother, Nu’umotu Falo Jr., was an outside linebacker at Colorado (2015-16, 18-19).
*USC director of recruiting operatons Megan Mueller graduated from Colorado in 2019, was a student manager in Colorado’s football equipment office for 4 seasons (2015-18) and also was a student manager for the Buffs’ women’s basketball team in 2016 and 2017 and then was a football recruiting assistant there in 2019.
*USC associate sports information director Darcy Couch is a 2000 graduate of Colorado.
*USC athletic director Mike Bohn was a 3-sport athlete at Boulder (Colo.) High and later was the athletic director at Colorado (2005-13)
*USC wide receivers coach Keary Colbert spent part of the 2008 season playing for the Denver Broncos.
*Colorado defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Chris Wilson coached USC’s defensive line in 2014 and 2015.
*Colorado cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin was a defensive graduate assistant coach at USC in 2006 and 2007.

So far 4 of the top 10 got beaten today.
Saben 24-0, wins by 21! I’m playin’ with house money now!🤑🤑🤑
Bohn to Fickell’s agent, “now how many zeros do you want on this check?”
Who was that team playing the Buffaloes? They had SC Trojan unis on but that’s not the team I’ve been watching the past month. Is Colorado that bad? Karl Dorrell hasn’t been a head coach in 14 years!
I never understood why CU would take Dorrell. Some things are just unexplainable.
If I remember correctly, Colorado was a consistent floor mat in the Big12, they’ve followed that tradition in the PAC12.
When you’re a floor mat destination You don’t have much draw, Dorell hasn’t been a head coach for years, though he was probably the only coach to take the Colorado AD’s call.
Here is a stat we haven’t seen in a while, USC passed 29 times and rushed 34 times. Perhaps Harrell has been reading the blog. Actually I have always thought he would call the run if it was working and today they gained 218 yards on the ground versus 276 in the air. Great balance.
Good win for Stanford, they beat down Oregon. I love it.
Shaw is redeeming himself here today giving Oregon a good game.
All around decent victory. I just want the team to show enough life and fight the remaining games to attract the coach we want and to keep the recruits interested enough to possibly wait until the Feb signing period to check out the new staff and culture
I gotta say, I was really impressed with the way Fickell handled himself, staff and players on the sideline today.
Stanford ties Oregon with O;OO on the clock. OT on the way.
STAN was dead in the water, eh? It’s almost amusing how the Ducks allowed them to tie it.
It is not on my mind of how Fickell did what seems to be good job building the Cinn program…..I am wondering was the foundation of that building process installed by the guy that is now OUR Athletic Director and can he do a repeat of that here ………FIGHT ON !!!!!
So now it seems we need to see if Caruso and Folt will hold him back or cut him loose to do his thing. If they cut him loose and let him make the hire then USC could do well, but if they get in the way with social justice and wokeness then USC could end up back where they were with Helton as coach. Although they have said they want to restore greatness to the program, I question how they will do it and how much greatness they can handle. Talk is cheap and it quieted down the uproar… Read more »
FEAR lurks around and through the USC football program.
Many USC fans are more fearful of a bad or disappointing hire with no great buzz than they are expectant of USC’s success with this move.
It is a learned behavior.
Somebody’s got to flip the switch though.
Sometimes, it’s just a simple matter of choice. I choose to believe Bohn, in view of the entirety of the circumstances, will have the power to exercise his excellent choice for the new HFC after all this warning and work.
If he DOES have that power I will take that as good news .
Well, if he’s been neutered, then USC football is officially hopeless going forward and Caruso will come off as a giant public liar who will forever draw the enmity of thousands of Trojans. Good luck with that mayoral campaign Caruso!
I truly believe there would be a terrific uprising of the Trojan family if Caruso doesn’t follow through. It could prove to be his fatal error in his political crusade.
My fear is that is that unless the new guy is named Urban, a vocal element of the fan base will put the new guy on the hot seat before he has a chance to put on his new SC polo. No matter who is hired there will be somebody screaming that Caruso\Folt kept Bohn from hiring the right guy.
Allen this is a very…very familiar situation to me ……..As a (brutalized) NY Knicks fan we know that the only reason Tom Thibodeau (just won NBA coach of the year) took the Knicks job there seems to have been a conversation that the Knicks owner keeps his nose out ……Just like Steveg says here our AD just might be able to get the type of guy we ALL desire …But will he have interference from above him in rank ????? I hope not !!!!!! FIGHT ON !!!!
If there is a worse coach then CH, it would be Dorrell. Not sure if he is worse, but he is bad. He had no answer for that USC defense that just simply played straight up, nothing fancy football. Their answer to Drake London was to triple team him, USC answered with a touchdown to Bryant. It is nice to win one, but I sure hope nobody got injured. We still have brain dead linemen, especially at center.
Whether Dorrell is or is not a good coach isn’t the problem. The problem is he was hired when no one & I mean NO ONE was interested in hiring him. The exact same situation SC was in when Haden hired CH and then Swann incredibly gave him a raise & extension. My nervousness isn’t that Fickell is hired instead of Franklin or vice versa. My concern is that the new hire will be some limited experience flavor of the month assistant or 1 year wonder from a lower division program. Hopefully Bohn won’t repeat previous mistakes and hire someone… Read more »
Kansas State recovers an onside kick ……Giving Oklahoma a decent fight .
Hey USC fans how about this >>>>>> College football media people all over this country are gonna be doing research on the Cinn program now to see what people had ANYTHING to do with building that program over the last 6-7 years (Like who their AD was over the last 6-7 years ) ………………………………………..
We al know Bohn hired Fickell. The question is can he get him out of Ohio into CA.
I was kind of following Cowherd’s logic that we need an NFL guy, but I have to admit Fickell is impressive. What he has done to make that team at Cincy competitive on a large scale stage shows me that he has the ability. So long as we keep Donte on this staff, we will have something substantial to build upon.
Yep, either Fickell or Aranda, both young guys with bright futures.
In a perfect world, Fickell as head coach and Aranda as D Coordinator. Could you imagine the success our program would have?
It would be incredible, but now Aranda has proven he can head coach a program back to respectability I doubt he would want to step down a notch. I doubt he is at Baylor for long though.
Fickell also gives some verbal public credit to Kelly who was coaching CIN very well before ND snatched him away.
Actually I am now wondering that if Cinn has been built to a top 10 program now how much of that building was due to our present AD ……And if he can build Cinn he can sure do it here ……FIGHT ON !!!!!
By firing Helton, Bohn proved that he wants a championship team. This next hire will be crucial to his legacy at SC.
Have to say, Cinn beat Notre Dame, and they did it at ND. Now ND has been exposed, still don’t think USC can play with them this season.
Maybe CIN is just that good. They won big in a very hostile, intense, hard-core football environment. Quite an accomplishment, based on what I saw today.
Good point. I think Cincy is that good.
Does the University of Cinn head coach get a congrats phone call tonight from a certain Los Angeles Athletic Director ??????????
Luke Fickell sure looks like CFB’s #1 coach who will be everyone’s pipe dream from here on in! What a win. Pure negative Irish history!
Does this move Fickell to number 1? I am still not completely sold on him. But his stock has risen.
Either him or Aranda in my book.
Light years above the experiment that was trashed after the Stanford debacle.
Know a city that is loving football right now …….Cincinnati (their college team and their 3-1 Bengals )
My vote ……..if ………IF Cinn goes undefeated they GOTTA be in the playoff.
2:00 left. Don’t think the luck of the Irish is coming through.
Looks like the Kiffin and Cristobal fantasists will finally shrink into the backgrounds.
Who is your pick Rush?
Cool Hand Luke. May the force be with him.
One of my faves! Like all you TDBers, right! What a movie. But what does that have to do with USC football? 😀😂😎
My Georgia Tech wife thinks SC has nothing to offer a top coach. She is kind of bitter, since the Yellow Jackets have not been relevant in about a decade or more. I am hoping for Fickell. I hope he figures out he has reached the highest possible plateau at CINN this season. Gonna cost foltie and the BOT big bucks now, however.
TD Cinn .
I pray ND doesn’t sneak in and win. CIN has it in the bag, with only five minutes left.
Fickell is a GOD!
ND misses extra point.
ND TD. Cinn not looking good this half.
missed FG again by Cinn.
It is always better to get a win than a loss.
Was getting worried for awhile.
The play calling was balanced.
Drake London is going to redefine the WR position in the NFL.
My thought is we have the offensive guns even if (when) London goes Pro, so go shopping for a dominant offensive line and some speed in the defensive backfield.
Oh need I mention a killer coach?
Nice throw Cinn QB .
# 1 thing I believe about this USC football program ? ………..Even if we go 10 -2 our AD is …..IS gonna at least call Meyer …….Fickell……(and might even call a certain person in the state of Alabama ) …..Heck he might even place a call to the current HC of the New England Patriots ……WHY ?????? Because he wants a REAL GAME-CHANGING head coach <<<<<<<That’s my belief …….FIGHT ON !!!!!
Momentum has changed In The ND game
See you guys later. It’s always fun to jump on here during the game. Fight on!
Plenty of good games still to come, the day is not over.
Great time for play action td pass
Colorado is bad, but Orlando made good adjustments. Don’t overthink it, just let your good players go make plays.
Yes, he did simplify the defense this week.
Time to sit Slovis
Bad ……BAD turnover by Cinn .
Wow …Cinn moving the ball down the field again .
2nd fall start by nielon. Plus he had Toa style snap today. I don’t know why we continue to start him.
Coach loves him too
Disasterous possession
There is no reason Slovis is still in the game.
Wow. CIN is just killing ND 17 – 0, mid-3rd. Fickell just might already be untouchable.
Problem is he can go undefeated at Cinn at still not be invited to playoff.
Don’t bet on it. He can be had.
Miller moss?
SC radio announcer just asked that same question .
This is the best Trojan team I have EVER seen!
Congrats Donte! Job well done today!
Oregon having trouble with Stanford (so far ).
Slovis looks better. His reads are much better today.
Did you see the open man to the right of Bryant? WIDE open
His run checks have been really good as well.
Nice catch Bryant ! …….FIGHT ON !!!!!
#72 again costs us a touch down.
But Cinn FG kicker misses a kick he should have made .
Big 45 yard pass by Cinn.
But they miss the FG.
I don’t know how London avoids injury playing as he does. But he sure is a sight to see.
A turnover at a good time .
That dude!
