Rutgers: OUT: TE Victor Konopka (undisclosed, season), TE Kenny Fletcher (undisclosed, season), RB Samuel Brown V (lower-body, season), LG Bryan Felter (knee, season); QUESTIONABLE: DL Aaron Lewis (undisclosed), DL Wesley Bailey (undisclosed)
Ryan Kartje (LA Times)/Luca Evans (OC Register) — Greedy Vance Jr. may not look, on paper, like he would be the answer to USC’s pass-rushing problems. One, he’s a nickel corner — hardly a premier pass-rushing position. And two, Vance weighs only 170 pounds, making him the lightest player on the Trojans’ defense.
But as USC struggles to get to the quarterback, defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn has had to get increasingly creative. In recent weeks, it’s meant manufacturing pressure from the most unexpected sources.
In this case: a stringy slot corner who never had been credited for a sack in his college career.
“We’re going to keep on trying to mix it up,” Lynn said Wednesday, “and give different people opportunities.”
That should continue Friday against Rutgers, a team that for all of its issues has been among the best in the Big Ten at protecting the quarterback.
To create that pressure against Maryland, Lynn sent Vance rushing the passer from the slot on five snaps, while Kamari Ramsey came up from the safety spot to blitz six times. Neither had rushed the passer that many times all of last season combined.
And they weren’t the only ones blitzing from the secondary: Akili Arnold added two pass-rush snaps last Saturday, while Jaylin Smith rushed once from his corner spot.
Those looks have become a more regular part of Lynn’s scheme with USC’s front failing to pressure quarterbacks with any consistency. USC ranks 124th in the nation in sacks with just eight through seven weeks. Nearly a third of those have come from the secondary, where Ramsey is tied for the team lead with two. USC’s entire defensive line has only a half-sack more.
That isn’t the sort of split either Lynn or coach Lincoln Riley would like to see. But past the midway mark of this season, they may not have a choice.
“You’ve got to go make it work with what you have,” Riley said, “And try to accentuate the things that we do well, and then try to — I don’t know if cover up’s the right word, but you got to try to create with what you have.”
That’s not exactly a rousing show of support for USC’s defensive front, which lost two of its most disruptive pieces — defensive end Anthony Lucas and linebacker Eric Gentry (18) — for the season last week. The pass-rushing picture up front has been bleak. Senior Jamil Muhammad, who led the team in sacks last season, has yet to register one. Sophomore defensive tackle Devan Thompkins is USC’s most productive source of interior pressure despite just starting his second game.
The circumstances have made for a difficult test of Lynn’s ability to adapt his defense. And so far, Riley has been impressed with his answers.
“You feel his creativity week to week,” Riley said. “And he stays really positive with it. Very positive, very confident, it’s all about — just find a way. And if this isn’t working, or if this is different, then let’s adjust, and do everything we can to put these guys in position to succeed and to stop offenses.”
That’s how Vance ended up blitzing from the slot last Saturday, sprinting untouched into the backfield where he brought down Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards for a two-yard loss.
Vance looked every bit the part of an ace pass rusher in that moment. Even if he was pint-sized.
The fans have turned the heat on Riley like never before, and Riley’s turned the heat on himself, making clear he believes it’s his responsibility to maneuver USC in position to finish games.
Here’s what else to watch as USC hosts Rutgers on Friday at 8 p.m.:
Rutgers’ big-time back
USC has had its share of trouble slowing Big Ten backs. Now it’s set to face the most difficult to take down of all.
No running back in the conference has forced more missed tackles than Rutgers’ Kyle Monangai, who has broken loose of 45 in just seven games. Despite being just 5-foot-9 and 209 pounds, Monangai is a load to take down, meaning USC’s tackling will be tested early and often. He’s averaging 120.7 yards per game.
“It’s going to be big as far as wrapping up, as far as gang tackling, as far as angles of pursuit, and it’s going to take all 11 guys on every single play,” Lynn said. “Because he’s a tough guy to get down. Out of all the backs we’ve played this year, he breaks the most tackles,” Lynn said. “He reminds me of Kareem Hunt (Kansas City Chiefs).”
Banged-up secondary
Coming off a short week, USC could be down as many as three of its usual starters in the secondary.
The status of Ramsey and cornerbacks Smith and Jacobe Covington still was in doubt as of Wednesday. Riley said he was “hopeful” after all three had “shown some positive signs” this week.
If Covington and Smith are unable to play, Decarlos Nicholson and John Humphrey are likely to get the starting nod, while freshman Marcelles Williams, who was elevated from the scout team this week, could play more of a role.
As Big Ten teams go, Rutgers isn’t much of a threat through the air. Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis is completing just 53% of his passes, 15th in the conference.
Lake ready
The moment a Michigan defender barreled into one of his knees three weeks earlier, Lake McRee thought his season was over. He’d been through two torn anterior cruciate ligaments. He feared the worst.
But McRee got good news. He returned to action Saturday with a brace on his knee, and stepped in with four catches. That involvement should continue to climb in the coming weeks, as USC’s young receiving corps continues to work through growing pains.
I hope this team can hang in there. They have some pretty tough teams coming up. It worries me because when I watch the game and watch the players on the field, I think…….this is not the same team that beat LSU in the first game of the year……especially in the defensive front 7 and on the defense in general. It bothers me that Rutgers ran 89 plays and SC ran only 51. True, SC gave up only 20 points…..kind of a bend but not break defense but will that hold up against some of the better teams coming up… Read more »
Well finally … even with a 3rd team secondary
Lemon is and always has been the real deal … that cheap shot at Michigan hurt the Trojans badly
Green is tough has a big future
Moss made strides … even pulled it once and walked in, he did that a few times earlier and SC is 7-1
Big 10 refs don’t even hide their bias vs USC amazing how bad they suck
And Thanks Big 10 Friday nite in LA 8 pm kick vs Rutgers
This whole conference is an embarrassment
Gotta get some pass rushers on the roster.
Moss can pull the ball back and run it. I thought he was not allowed to do that. Good play.
Better score this possession…just saying.
Here we go again
Sure feels like it at the moment. 1st possession of 2nd half totally lacked any energy or sense of wanting to put this game away.
11 runs and 16 pass plays for USC 1st half 244 total yds. Rut-232 total yds
Kam Fountain looks better than Muhammad.
Sam Greene looks pretty good for a freshman too.
Reality is that our defense just isn’t very good. Can’t understand why we are playing their receivers so soft, not even contesting the throw. And with so little pass rush, they just march down the field.
Ya but then so do we.✌️😁
Until we don’t, like the past weeks.
That’s what I have been saying. I don’t think Lynn trusts this 2nd string secondary tonight.
ELO hasn’t taken the stage yet but I am right if I was counting of Fox coverage I would have missed the game on the recording. Extra innings are practically guaranteed. This game is on the wrong night 3 hours from Rialto to the not so fabulous forum.
Fight on!
In your situation just record the program after the scheduled time slot. I usually add about 60 minutes worth to play safe. I saw ELO a couple of years ago at the Hollywood Bowl, they put on a really good show.
This secondary is giving way too much space in zone coverage. If Lynn is going to constantly blitz on passing downs at least play cover 1 man on the backend. I don’t think he trusts his secondary.
Grand slam by Freddie Freeman…Dodgers win
Finally Lemon is returning kicks!!!
Nice kickoff return by Lemon…..subbing for Branch
FOX SUCKS!!! I missed the entire 1st drive. You would think they would tell their viewers on the 4k channel that the SC Game was moved.
Another horrible ref call to take away a called TD, that Branch actually caught.
Even the refs in the replay stink.
Dodgers go to extra innings……
Questionable for tonight:
Jacobe Covington
Jaylin Smith
Greedy Vance
Kamari Ramsey
Emmanuel Pregnon
Since this season is lost, it’s good that some of the younger kids on D get some playing time. They need to develop.
Sure seems USC has it hands tied behind its back tonight with so many guys out.

Great info Steve. Darn I should have checked in our blog earlier.
Justin Dedich is starting for the Rams…….AT GUARD. I always thought he was a great guard………not a very good center.
Good point about Dedich just evaporating at OC for the Trojans. It’s great to see him make it with the Rams so far!
Center is a hard position to fill. I’m not sure Monheim is a great center although much better than Dedich and Toa Lobadauhn. Brett Neiland was a good center although a little undersized
What I wold like to know is why LR has changed his offense since he has come to SC. Do the math. In the 7 years that he was at Oklahoma(OC/HC) he ran the ball 55% and threw the ball 45%. Since he came to SC, that has changed to the point where this year he has run the ball 39% and thrown it 61%.. That’s a huge change from running the ball 55% to 39%. The only answer that I can think of is that when he was at Oklahoma he had a much better O-Line coach which produced… Read more »
Remember, as hard as he tried, LR couldn’t get the OU OL coach, Bill Bedenbaugh, to follow him to USC.
I don’t know if that really had an impact as OU’s offense is absolutely horrible now and Brent Venables is already on the hot seat in Norman where the pitchforks are understandably out. I don’t think Venables will make it at OU.
Maybe Bedenbaugh would like to come to USC now? 😂
Maybe this year is not all Bedenbaughs fault. Maybe part of that has to do with Oklahomas OC which they just fired(if I’m not mistaken). In 2022 Oklahoma was 10th in the nation rushing. In 2023 they slipped a little to 35th but they still ran the ball for over 182 YPG. and 4.5 YPC. This year they have been terrible but that could be because of the OC. Anyway you look at it, LR does not run the ball like he did at Oklahoma. It’s a different offense.
The frustrating thing is the run game seems better than the passing. Moss is looking worse as the season goes on and the tackles still can’t pass block. Marks does well, Joiner has power with 9.1 ypc and the run blocking looks pretty good. Why stress your weakness especially late with the game on the line? Makes no sense.
USC’s 3-4 record makes no sense either. Hope we don’t find a new way to lose a game that we were headed to winning before collapsing.
If Miller Moss continues to play sub-par, I hope LR brings in Jayden Maiava to see what he can do.
Relying on our ground game more would also be cool. Tackles who can’t pass block aren’t a winning recipe, especially with a straight pocket passer with limited mobility..
2023 was “The Grinch That Stole Defense” season. 2024 is looking like “The Tulane Effect” season.
GT, I think Riley panics. His game plan is working along and suddenly it gets checked. Whether it’s a three and out or a sudden breakdown on defense, his flight or fight instincts kick in and he goes for the quick strike. It gets worse as the failures mount and the play calls become more erratic and predictable.
Moss probably doesn’t have the same autonomy that Williams had, so he’s just following orders.
It Can’t be easy as a OC to try staying ahead of any defensive changes that now limit your offense when all your O-line can really do halfway well
is reach block.
The receivers don’t block well either especially on those outside screens.
What is a Rutger? That’s what my first thought was when this game was announced. I remember USC games being on KFI 640 the only 50k watt clear channel radio station on the west coast. The strongest signal for the strongest team. And because all of the other local stations had to drop their power at sunset, KFI was only radio heard as far away as New Mexico. They had sports reports and I remember hearing the team names and wondering who they were. Rutgers’ was one of the names that always seemed weird. I am now old enough to… Read more »
Henry Rutgers (October 7, 1745 – February 17, 1830) was a United States Revolutionary War hero and philanthropist from New York City. Rutgers University was named after him in 1825 after he donated a $5000 bond which placed the college on sound financial footing. Rutgers supported that free people of color should be removed from the United States rather than allowed to grow as a population. He was himself a slaveowner, like many of his relatives.
