USC vs. Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl: Who has the edge?
What’s at stake, injuries, who’s better, matchup to watch, TV info and a final score prediction for Friday’s game
LAS VEGAS BOWL: USC (6-6, 4-5 Big Ten) vs. TEXAS A&M (8-4, 5-3 SEC)
Friday, 7:30 p.m., Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, ESPN/710 AM, Line: Texas A&M by 4 points
Luca Evans (OC Register)
Key injuries
USC: OUT: DE Anthony Lucas (leg)
Texas A&M: OUT: RB Le’Veon Moss (knee); QUESTIONABLE: CB Jaydon Hill (undisclosed),
Key absences (known or likely)
USC: RB Quinten Joyner (transfer), WR Duce Robinson (transfer), CB Jaylin Smith (NFL draft), RB Woody Marks (NFL draft), QB Miller Moss (transfer), S Zion Branch (transfer), WR Zachariah Branch (transfer), LB Raesjon Davis (transfer), WR Kyron Hudson (transfer), DL Sam Greene (transfer), RT Mason Murphy (transfer), C Jonah Monheim (NFL draft), DT Bear Alexander (transfer)
Texas A&M: WR Cyrus Allen (transfer), OL Kam Dewberry (transfer), QB Connor Weigman (transfer), OL TJ Shanahan (transfer), DL Nic Scourton (NFL draft), DL Shemar Stewart (NFL draft), DL Shemar Turner (NFL draft)
What’s at stake? Well, not much, as appears to increasingly be the case in this modern era of mid-level bowl games in college football. Cosmetically, this USC program will be much different than the version fans saw for the majority of 2024.
Six starters from the Trojans’ final regular-season game against Notre Dame won’t play, either gone to the NFL draft or the transfer portal. Gone, too, are key offensive contributors like Robinson and Joyner; in the midst of widespread offseason overhaul, it will be notable to watch which Trojans put themselves in positions for larger roles in 2025.
Big-picture, though, USC needs a win. Transfer portal departures – Robinson and Joyner included – have cast a damper on the program’s development in another middling season, mitigated slightly by the recent arrivals of some big-bodied defensive linemen.
A return to Las Vegas and Allegiant Stadium, where USC knocked off LSU four long months ago, could provide a much-needed bookend to 2024 against another SEC foe.
Who’s better? Even with widespread postseason changes to these rosters, these programs still bear striking similarities in identity. USC and Texas A&M made a midseason change to a more mobile quarterback, with mixed results. The Trojans are 2-1 since Jayden Maiava took over for Miller Moss, averaging 27.3 points per game.
The Aggies are 1-3 since Marcel Reed took over for Connor Weigman, averaging 26.5 points. Both teams are missing significant talent at running back, with Marks gone to the draft for USC and Le’Veon Moss out for the season for A&M.
Both teams are missing starters at the line of scrimmage, with the Trojans’ offensive line depth thinned and Texas A&M’s defensive line depth thinned with the absences of graduating seniors. This one’s a toss-up.
Matchup to watch: USC’s RBs against Texas A&M’s defensive front. Marks is gone. Joyner is gone.
By sheer rushing yards, USC is down exactly 90% of its total 2024 production on the ground in Vegas. True freshman third-string back Bryan Jackson in their stead, is set to shoulder heavy volume.
The role in Riley’s offense is new to Jackson. The role, as a general concept, is not. He’s been the man, growing up in Texas, since his dad coached him in second-grade ball. He was the man in middle school, when he scored “every single touchdown” for his seventh- and eighth-grade teams, as father Bryan said. He was the man at McKinney High, shortly after his high school coach yanked him up to varsity after a single half of JV ball.
One glance at Jackson, and it doesn’t seem the former three-star back is exactly a hand-in-glove fit in Riley’s scheme. The head coach hasn’t deployed a back of Jackson’s sheer size since he had 231-pound Rhamondre Stevenson at Oklahoma in 2020. For the past two years, from MarShawn Lloyd to Marks, USC’s running backs have largely thrived off cutbacks and pockets in a spread-out offense. Jackson’s (21) final two years at McKinney, as father Bryan reflected, were largely spent toting the rock on power runs.
The third-stringer Bryan Jackson, with Woody Marks and Quinten Joyner gone, is poised to step in for the Trojans in the Las Vegas Bowl
A&M, meanwhile, is down three starters – Scourton, Stewart and Turner – to the draft. There’s an opportunity for the 230-pound Jackson to bruise the Aggies up front, and earn himself a long look in USC’s 2025 backfield in the process.
USC wins if: Jackson breaks off early-down chunk yardage and doesn’t miss blocks … linebacker Eric Gentry picks up right where he left off in a brilliant start to 2024 before redshirting due to concussions … and Maiava plays clean and doesn’t have to throw the ball 50 times in a shootout.
Prediction: Texas A&M 27, USC 24.
The Aggies’ defense has stepped up to the task against some of the top programs in the country this year, and USC’s offense is down some key talent. It’s unlikely the Trojans will have quite enough pop to emerge on top against a rugged SEC team.

Texas A&M Aggies Fall Apart and Blow 3-Score Second Half Lead to USC Trojans to Lose Las Vegas Bowl Matt Galatzan (SI.com) — The Texas A&M Aggies looked to head into the Las Vegas Bowl vs. the USC Trojans and end their season on a high note while giving themselves momentum heading into the offseason. Unfortunately for the Aggies, it wasn’t to be, with Texas A&M blowing a three-score second-half lead to fall in Las Vegas 35-31. Things started off well for Texas A&M, with Marcel Reed leading the Aggies down the field for an early touchdown on a pass to… Read more »
O-Line played well. RB’s played well. Receiver were not getting open for most of the night. I can’t see us winning any kind of a championship with Maiva at QB. He’s very inaccurate and makes a lot of bad decisions. Likes to throw into a crowd. I would say goodbye to Jacobi Lane. I don’t think he will be a Trojan next year. But I could be wrong.
Maybe we should play all of our games in Vegas
As long as we’re playing an SEC team!
Good night
One stop wins it
Glad to see it was Kyle Ford! And Jayden Maiava comes through (eight of nine on final fantastic drive) after a brutal night. ✌
Great for USC to pull this off! USC and Vegas go very well together. It’s now a Trojan Tradition…
Can USC avoid yet another 4th Q collapse?
I guess not
Will we come back? Plenty of time.
Yes
Dynamic Duo? Lemon and Lane?
Game remains USC’s for the taking! ✌
You gotta love Lemon! Special player. Bryan Jackson as well.
Good news my wife and I booked a vacation in NOLA for Christmas week because we expected USC to be better this year (and playing new years day) bad news It’s past midnight in NOLA and I’m up because USC will be home new years day.
Fat Tuesday in NOLA is the best.
Fair catching inside the five? Why? Ya, no special teams coach necessary.
Not a great decision but the prize still goes to Jayden and his 3 interceptions and Jayden has a QB coach.
I think Lincoln Riley is dyslexic. He’s been trenching in the wins.He might have stomach flu, his favorite play is to throw up the ball.
He certainly doesn’t have the runs.
Most effective play in LR’s playbook is the defensive pass interference play.
The TAM coach looked like good old Kiffin after the second one.
I miss Kiffin, especially in times like these.
FYI: backup up QBs for this game are junior, Gage Roy and freshman, Jack Stupin and freshman, Dylan Gebbia.
Can Riley be arrested for impersonating a football coach?Maiava is proving that anyone who thinks the passing game is the way to win football games should be locked up.
No, because he’s not impersonating a football coach. If he were, the team would be better than this.
good night y’all
Game, set, match my friends. 2024 is in the books with a 6-7 season. The rapid disintegration and demise of The Brat continues.
Jayden is 6’4″ and this is his 3rd pass batted down.
OK, Maiava is just not a D1 QB.
Who’s the third strong guy?
Ford has looked really frustrated tonight with his QB.
At least the band is having a good time.
Elijah Paige (OT) is done for the game.
Game is getting away from Trojans. No-octane offense is giving TAM way too many opportunities.
That’s because during half time the A&M coaches made adjustments. Riley passed out some of the koolaide he had us drinking’ when Bohn brought him in.
Our quarterback has metallic rheumatism. That’s when the iron in his blood turns to lead in his arms. His lame duck passes are worse than the president’s lame duck.decisions.
Hard to believe he passed for 3000+ and ran for 270+ last year.
He plays like this is only his 4th game and in reality this is his 16th game.
You’re right, he really does look like a true freshman. They said he was neck and neck with MM in Spring. Go figure. Maybe once he learned MM was starting, he checked out for the Fall. I’m just not seeing what all the hype was about.
What’s worse bad clock management or the lack of special teams coaches?
bad clock management IMO.
What John said, but ST may yet spell our doom, so can I withhold my final vote until I see Riley’s complete body of work for the night?
Hope our fantastic Ray Guy Award punter isn’t hurt seriously.
Another Riley mental block on calling time out and wasting seconds.
What game is this guy watching? Some clock counting down until New Years?
The TV announcers are roasting the Brat on time management.
He deserves it. That was horrible. LR must have thought it was the 4th quarter and it triggered his brain meltdown.
Clock management by Riley is horrible yet again
Bizarre and inexcusable.
Our run blocking has been pretty darn good.
Look for TAM to start loading the box and daring the wildly inaccurate JM to beat them.
And yet John what does the Brat call? We’re gaining 8,9, 10 yards a carry and Riley starts calling passing plays that ends up a pick. Missed opportunity again and no score.
Not since the Grinch left have I said, “Who?” After almost every play. Someone joked that names were needed of SC’s jerseys so we’d know who was playing. I guess so
Another terrible throw by the slow’n Samoan Really behind or off the mark are his best plays.
Finally
Take the Lane Train!
Pick city! Ya, baby. We got lucky on the 2nd one. I’ll take it.
Eric Gentry is roaming the sidelines tonight. I hope that’s a good sign.
I thought I saw a tall thin guy with bushy hair on the sideline that reminded me of EG.
I’d bet if you asked Riley to run “student body right” he’d ask, “what’s that?”
Maybe, but the answer he’s gonna get next year when he asks where all the fans are will be “student body left”.
Funny stuff. We officially have a new definition of “Student Body Left” under Lincoln Riley. I never thought this was possible until I read your comment vT.
I’m leaning hard on levity to get me through this one.
What a mistake sending Moss to the portal. This quarterback is lacking in both talent and football smarts. Is Riley linking us or is he seriously thinking he made the right move?
Only to our untrained eyes…
He makes too many bad decisions by trying to do it all (aka hero ball).
It does kind of look like he’s trying to be CW2.
So far, for USC, punting truly is winning. Rick Neuheisel would be impressed. ✌
😅
i think maeva is not the guy. i guess its the kid from centennial is the man for next season
Seems awfully raw for a guy that started a full year prior to coming to SC.
Saved by a downed knee. Maiava looks like he needs a makeover so far. Still plenty early for USC to get with the program, but we lost Elijah Paige to the cart. Ugh.
Syracuse QB has 4 passes for TDs at end of 3rd. Will he pass MM for Holilday Bowl record?
Well the JV team needs work. I hope they get it together before they embarrass the school.
TAM just schooled LR on how to put together a beautiful opening drive.
So far I’m seeing a fast opposing QB that may very well run our D ragged, and some poor tackling.
Seeing how many different guys will be in on offense, they will be unpredictable, good for USC and Riley, might see a showing like last year, with a win USC would have 2 SEC wins against decent teams. Defense is trending up, offense unknown!
The B1G refs strike again. Multiple egregious penalties called in the third quarter. Took away Georgia Tech had been asserting in the third quarter The network officiating consultant tried to cover for the shitty calls, but finally agreed the calls were wrong. The officiating was impossibly bad—the punt reception interference non-call, a PI call where the Tech DB had perfect, no-contact coverage and finally a flag on Coach Key for going crazy on the horrible calls. I reminded my GT alumna wife that I’d been seeing this garbage officiating all season in SC’s first season in the B1G from the… Read more »
Hard to believe this is the last game of the season. Wish we had some of the guys who entered the transfer portal or are going into the draft but that’s not going to happen.
I’m confident that Riley will pull out all the stops to get a win so I feel confident.
SC wins the game 24-17
Due to so many holes being filled by backups I don’t know how the game will play out versus TAM. Our D versus their O or vice versa will ultimate decide the win. Of course fumbles-pucks-penalties will matter in a game like this. I can see LR calling many more passes than running plays.
NAVY ,down 14-0 after the 1st Q, has gone ahead of OU in the Armed Forces Bowl 21-14 with 4:30 to go.
Update — NAVY beats OU 21-20, when the Sooners miss on a last-second two-point conversion try.
The Navy DB covering the Sooner WR that caught that last touchdown just stopped covering him and he was alone in the end zone. The Sooner QB didn’t see any open receivers for the two pointer but I did on the replay. The Navy blitz got to him just in time.
I still like to see OU lose under Venables whenever possible. Misery loves company.
Read the OL for USC tonight, E Paige LT, E Pregnon LG, Killian O’Connor C, A Noa RG, Tobias Raymond RT. Will Jackson get to run much or will we see a lot of passes from Maiava to Lemon?
