RICE vs. USC Football Prediction and Preview
Lincoln Riley makes long-awaited Trojans debut at home against the Owls
Kane Webb (Athlon Sports) — The wait is over. The pain is over. The having to sit through the same stuff week after week after week after week is also, mercifully, thankfully, and finally over. USC will finally begin a college football season with actual expectations for the first time since 2012. That was the last time USC was in this position, but I wouldn’t expect a similar result to 2012.
USC itself had finally tired of the excuses and hired Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma — and along with Riley came the talent, the recruiting class, and transfers. So now USC is poised to place the most athletic and dynamic quarterback they’ve ever had in their system on the field to do what he does best with all of the best talent they could give him from around the nation. When you are USC, it really is just that simple. You do one and the other just tends to happen.
Up first for that newly installed quarterback named Caleb Williams and his posse? The Rice Owls. This will be nothing more than a game for Williams to go out there and get comfortable with his new settings and his new teammates. The score should be out of hand quickly, and it should be a relatively easy day for them to learn and have fun. So, I’ll present the following with that in mind.
RICE at No. 14 USC
Kickoff:Â Saturday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. PT

Spread:Â USC -32.5
When Rice Has the Ball
For Rice to get something out of this game, they’re likely going to have to look beyond the scoreboard. Rice is a program that very much knows what it is, and the Owls lean into very well. They’re an elite research institution and a pretty dang good baseball school. But they know they’re fodder in football, and that’s why their own Marching Owl Band (M.O.B.) often plays halftime shows that insult the opposing team’s biggest rival. If Rice were playing this halftime show, they’d mock UCLA and Oregon the whole time. They like to endear themselves while they earn their check.
Football-wise, though, uh, they’re all over the place. They’ve had some pretty good teams recently. The 2013 edition won 10 games and went to the Liberty Bowl, even if they did set the Liberty Bowl record for largest-ever loss. But that’s Rice! That’s why you love Rice. They’ll do some incredibly wonderful things, and then most times they fail at the very end of it. But every great once in a while, Rice does something truly magical. USC will just be hoping it isn’t this year.
When USC Has the Ball
All USC has to do to win this game is remain within themselves. Riley and his defensive coordinator Alex Grinch will surely have a solid plan for offense and defense. Ryan Dougherty (smiling) will be responsible for USC’s special teams, but beyond the return game and PATs, I’m not sure his guys will be called upon too terribly much. As for the star of the show, Williams, well, it’s on him to go out there and win over the USC fans who have been waiting for someone like him seemingly forever.
That’s kinda the cool thing here if you’re Williams. This moment is practically made for you. The fans have wanted this new era. They cried loudly enough that the boosters bought in. Once the boosters bought in, it was over and done with for the old ways.
Now Williams is the one who gets to introduce boosters and fans to what they’ve long said could be an unstoppable force. He gets the chance to be the force multiplier. Just have fun tomorrow and the W will come. Sorry, the analysis isn’t more awe-inspiring than that, but it’s true.
Final Analysis
This game is meant for Rice to pick up a check and for USC to pick up a win. Beyond that, this matchup is going to be a bit of a double-edged blade. It won’t prepare them in any way for Stanford, but it does give Riley a solid chance to take one final look at what he has before he begins the onslaught next week in Palo Alto. This game is a good chance to give a few guys a shot at another position or perhaps try a few things as the game winds down, and that’s all you can ask for before you begin the kind of schedule USC has early on in 2022.
Prediction: USC 65, RICE 13

Now we get a look at Oregon State.
Florida gets a game winning interception with Utah knocking on the door to score a game winning TD …..Florida beats Utah .
Sad for UTAH to lose like that.
Reminds me of when USC had Rob Johnson and John David Booty as our QBs.
Whittingham just pissed that win away. Why not kick it and put your defense out there to stop Florida with 20 seconds left. Dumb Dumb Dumb Even my wife agreed with me. Then take your chances in OT.
The old adage, at home play to win, visiting play to tie and keep going
@Steveg He had a couple of questionable decisions. This last one I am okay with because you have a veteran qb and he is supposed to know that you don’t you force any passes, which is what he did. Tough loss.
Touchdown Florida …….29-26 Florida leading Utah…….1:25 left in game .
Just now on live Radio interview Lincoln Riley >>>>>”Not giving ANY thought to Stanford until (Maybe) right about now” <<<<< Best way to never experiencing “Trap Games ” …….Fight On !!!!!
I’ve had the Utes-Gators and ND-tOSU on my 2nd and 3rd screens for most of their games. They are really hitting hard. We will have our work cut out for us against the Utes, and will need to get much better on defense.
John, can you post that link for stats before every game or make it a permanent link we can click on? It was a great addition.
@Steveg The link changes every week and I some of the away games won’t show up but I will try my best.
1-0 Record …..Now we play a decent (or better) physical team like Stanford which is good . We get to see some smashmouth football so we know that this team can handle all facets of things that exist in this game of football ….. FIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!
This was a lot of fun. Really happy with Game 1. Looking forward to beating Stanford next weekend.
30 passing plays 28 rushing plays. Pretty balanced.
What a difference a year makes!
I like the transformation. Now they just have to keep improving.
Thanks guys. See you next week. Fight on!
Riley shows passion even when they are 50 points ahead. Gotta love it.
Love seeing him coach to the wire. Saban does that, always teaching, always pressing, always wanting perfection, regardless. This is when the Cat’s teams would get sloppy, not that they were ever up by 52 points.
This article came very close on the prediction
Webb nailed it didn’t he.
GA Southern is beating someone called Morgan St 52-7. That guy must be a heck of a coach.
They can keep him.
I agree
Sure they battled
Utah turns the ball over on downs on the three inch line. Down by 1.
Actually our offense has been pretty quiet this 2nd half.
They didn’t have the ball much.
So very true
When we are ahead by 45 why not have these guys practice covering closer?
Jumping ahead to next week, I really think we can go up to Stanford and blow them out.
Stanford may have a good run game, who knows. I doubt they will have a good game plan though. Their run D won’t be good enough.
Three plays two penalties.
Five plays Three penalties. Is Helton back?
I think we definitely pull all the starters and go to the backups from here.
They have been playing the backups the entire game at almost every position on both sides of the ball.
I hope Moss gets to come in and throw with this offense.
Does anyone think Game Day will talk about USC now? They didn’t say much of anything this morning. Of course that’s espn for ya
Austin Jones !
Come to think of it we haven’t seen a screen or bubble screen all day. How refreshing.
Benton they said had really improved and today he got to show it.
Above article ↑↑↑↑↑ predicted 65-13 ……..Lets see how close that gets ………Fight On !!!!!
This USC team must have made Allen speechless.
I think he is crying with happiness.
Where is Allen?
Totally enjoying SC’s 52-14 effort so far. This might be a team I could REALLY like I think. What a fun team to watch, with some real stars!
Isn’t it it nice to see the defense actually stopping the other team? What a concept we missed under Helton.
For sure.
Miller Moss appearance coming soon ?
That should be it.
Who cares, Williams is to much fun to watch. no actually I hope we see him soon.
Intercepted. Why didn’t he score?
Finally we get to see the offense.
Pick 6’s are happening today ! ……..FIGHT ON !!!!!
USC only had one last season.
If they keep up the pick 6’s they will have to give the kicker a break and bring in another one for a while.
Foreman coming on like an edge rusher now. Putting pressure on the Qb.
Another Pick Six! Huge pressure by Foreman!
Ties a USC record for pick 6’s in a game.
Wow. 3 scores on D. I can’t remember that happening in a game. Anyone else?
Am I dreaming?
Defense scoring as much as the offense?
Nice read in the boxscore ! >>>>> “TJ McMahon pass intercepted for a TD Shane Lee return for 40 yds for a TD (Denis Lynch KICK)”
Okay that’s what we wanted to see from the D
Defense coming through.
I have to say we have room for improvement but this offense with this line is like the best Christmas present I ever had. Our running backs can block, and catch. Williams is one cool character back there. Had Taj not dropped a pass the only incompletions were throw aways.
Definitely happy with the offense so far. D has work to do.
Utah 7 Florida 7. Utah is not tackling well at all.
If that became a season-long thing for Utah I could live with it .
Reminds me of USC the last few years.
1st half grades
offense gets A’s all the way around. Line, QB, RB’s, WR’s
defense- not so much
DLine- D
LB’s – B
secondary- C- one big play but nothing else
Grinch- D
Tuli has been double teamed every play no matter where he lines up. Foreman plays like a girl for some reason. Benton is a surprise, he is getting penetration. One thing I do like is we are not giving up the outside but containing it for a change. Backfield needs to get a little tighter on the receivers. When they do they win.
I think that’s a little harsh for the D. They haven’t been great but it’s the first game.
Happy with what I’ve seen but D has to get better.
↑↑↑↑↑ Pretty much covers it (But that’s just me ) …..FIGHT ON !!!!!!!!!!
Now, can the D line adjust or are they that weak. Rice does have a good O line in my book.
Would have preferred a TD. But ok with the 3.
O line is awesome pass protection
they are really staying on their blocks and the running backs are not afraid to mix it up either.
O-line giving Williams all day. Nice to see our QB not running for his life every play.
RICE already has 218 yards of offense.
