USC’s ‘Captain America’ Tackett Curtis pushing to improve after realizing his dream
Thuc Nhi Nguyen (LA Times) — Before he was USC’s “First Avenger,” Tackett Curtis was the first pick in almost every family pick-up game.
In Many, La., a town of fewer than 3,000 people about 20 miles away from the Texas border, there’s sports and there’s hunting. The Curtises aren’t into the latter, which meant older brothers Gunner and Carson regularly assembled their friends in their parents’ activity room for whatever game they could cook up that day. From football to Wiffle Ball, Tackett, four years younger than his closest brother, was never far. The kid who was eight years younger than some of his competitors did more than just tag along.
“He was one of the first picks all throughout growing up,” Gunner said. “He was never like, ‘Oh, I’m the youngest brother, I’m not supposed to be able to score.’ It was like, ‘I’m supposed to be able to tackle everybody, I’m supposed to be able to score on everybody.’”
Now a freshman linebacker at USC, Tackett is playing beyond his age again. The 19-year-old was the first true freshman to start a season opener for USC at inside linebacker since Cameron Smith in 2015 and just the second since 1978.
The 6-foot-2, 255-pound prospect dazzled coaches and teammates immediately and earned the nickname “Captain America” for his relentless effort in practice. Gunner, 7½ years older than Tackett, was “rolling on the floor” laughing when he heard the kid who used to pump out push-ups and pull-ups before playing PlayStation had earned a superhero nickname already. But, he acknowledged, it fit.
Tackett Curtis is here to rescue the USC defense.
“He came out there to help them,” said Jess Curtis, Tackett’s uncle and coach at Many (La.) High School. “He felt like the defense improves, they can win a national championship and that’s why he’s there.”
A coveted four-star recruit, Tackett chose the Trojans over Ohio State and Wisconsin. Gunner marveled at the mature young adult who navigated the stressful recruiting process. His youngest brother was not swayed by flashy facilities or special social media graphics. Instead, Tackett grilled coaches on defensive schemes, how they envisioned him fitting, and requested special meetings with strength and conditioning coaches and nutritionists to ensure he could build his body and get faster as his career progressed. He evaluated each school’s need at linebacker.
The Trojans had a big one.
The inside linebacker position was one of USC’s thinnest last year. The Trojans bulked up by scooping former Oklahoma State stalwart Mason Cobb out of the transfer portal to push returning starters Shane Lee and Eric Gentry. With Lee and Gentry nursing injuries, Tackett, who graduated from high school early to participate in spring practices at USC, staked his claim to the starting role, relying on his unwavering energy on each play.
“Tackett, man, he’s always running, he’s always going hard,” Cobb said. “It does remind me of myself when I was growing up, but man, he’s much more talented, much faster, quicker, stronger.”
Tackett worked to join the starting lineup during preseason camp, pairing with Cobb in the top group. Between updates about enjoying the beach during his limited time off or trying new restaurants in the big city, Tackett gave Gunner the rundown of each practice. Gunner, a law student in Ohio, grew more excited with each message.
He couldn’t wait to see Tackett live out his dream.
The son and nephew of football coaches, Tackett took to the sport immediately. He began a strict training regimen in middle school, doing individual workouts, going to a speed clinic and working in the weight room with his dad, all building up toward the goal of playing in college. His uncle brought college posters from coaches who were recruiting at his school and Tackett hung them up in his room.
As he ran out of the tunnel before the game Saturday, Tackett paused to soak in the rare experience of getting to take the field at the Coliseum in front of tens of thousands of fans. He had a few nerves.
“It’s a good nervous,” Tackett said. “I love that type of stuff, just being able to feel that and have a little bit of pressure on you. That’s what makes it fun.”
Tackett logged two tackles in his debut but acknowledged several mistakes. Gentry, who is still returning from a lingering ankle injury, came off the bench to notch two tackles and affected the game with his unique 6-foot-6 frame, fueling more competition at the position.
With the shock of the first game fading, coaches expect the freshman will quickly rise to the occasion.
“His first reaction is hit somebody. The second reaction is maybe going in the right direction,” defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said. “But that just comes with reps. … Of all the guys we’re worried about, it’s not Tackett.”
Even as a kid, Tackett never shied away from contact on the football field. He was “a man among boys” playing youth football, Jess said. In high school, he blossomed into a dominant linebacker/safety, do-it-all quarterback and dynamic kick returner who helped Many to four consecutive state championship games, including two titles. He became the first Many player to win Louisiana’s Mr. Football award.
They called him “Rambo,” Jess said, because “he was kind of quiet and didn’t say a lot, he just kind of kicked a lot of butt out on the football field.” The “Captain America” moniker is fitting as well.
“He’s built like a superhero,” he said with a laugh.
As Tackett matured at Many, Jess tried to coax out a more vocal leadership style, but his nephew preferred to lead by example. He always showed up early for practice and stayed late in the weight room. His star in the small town grew, but his ego never followed.
“At Many, he was the best player, big man on campus,” Jess said, “and you’d see him with the young freshman.”
When Gunner thinks about his little brother, he still imagines the 9-year-old wrecking ball running around in the yard. Tackett has grown into a chiseled force in the middle of USC’s defense flying across the field to make a tackle.
This is one superhero who doesn’t need a cape.

Oregon State, Washington State Trying To ‘Steal Some Mountain West Schools’
Jeremy Mauss (Mountain West Wire) — “The main reason that these two schools want to keep the Pac name alive is due to the value of the name, a boatload of media rights money the schools would get by being the last two left, and probably not be seen as a lesser set of schools by joining another league…”

FLAG! 12 men on the field! UCLA should have run off the field.
Waiting for a crowd sign in ESPN gameday broadcast next year.
“Dear UCLA,
Your alimony/child support check bounced again and your ex- and the children are stranded at the airport in Boston. We cannot get back to Berkeley unless we pay cash for our charter to get home after our ACC game with Boston College. What have you been doing with all that money from the B1G?
You will be hearing from our lawyers next week!
You bastards!
Callie Berzerkeley”
Allen, was there anyone from USC that went to the NFL this year get cut?
I think the Jets cut both TE Josh Falo and RB Travis Dye.
Bears cut OL Bobby Haskins.
WR Terrell Bynum made the Chargers practice squad.
Christian Roland-Wallace Problems ? ???? ……. Christian Roland-Wallace was ejected from the second half of the Wildcat’s rivalry game with ASU. That means he should be suspended for the first half of the first game of 2023. They mention in the Article that some guess Riley and company never realized Roland-Wallace was even facing a suspension.(From Internet ) >>>>> “NCAA rules state that any player who is ejected in the second half of a game has to sit out the first half of the following game. That suspension carries over to the new season if it happens in the final game… Read more »
The issue was resolved already. The NCAA declared that all participants that were ejected in season ending games would sit out the 1st half of games in Week 1, which is this week. The San Jose State game was considered Week 0.
Trojan haters would have loved to see a forfeit.
I heard Utah fan was blaming USC for the failure of the conference.
That’s like blaming Reggie Bush for NIL. One piece in a lot of moving parts.
eff them all!
Texas????
It’s Debbie Downer Time for STAN and CAL
“While I get that this is the deal they probably have to do,” said a source with ties to the Bay Area schools, “I have zero excitement about it.”
See my earlier comment:
eff them all!
I do feel sad for WSU and ORE ST, the last Pac members standing.
I don’t know much about either school, but now that they have officially been abandoned and basically relegated to Group of Five, I feel for ’em.
The choice by STAN and CAL to join the ACC with all the negatives to that move surprises me for sure, as USC’s bombshell move to the B1G continues to ripple through CFB.
Spin city! Go Condoleeza!
Three questions I have for the remaining PAC teams.
Paint my mind completely boggled
Bonus question is the ACC renaming itself to the All Coast Conference? Or do we wait for the Big 10 renaming themselves to the Big 18 or whatever number they’re up to.
The world’s gone crazy. The sports story of the year just kept pushing more and more unpredictable outcomes.
The only thing that would surprise me now would be to hear that the B1G is taking WSU and ORE ST.
PAC still works. Pacific Atlantic Conference. Ditch ACC.
The ACC would require it be named the Atlantic Pacific Conference.
APC
Sounds like a mini-mart in the deep South…
We may see a lot of Curtis this season. Not sure just how well healed that ankle is on Gentry, and playing linebacker he needs to cut and change direction quickly. Thankfully USC has Davis, Cobb, and Lee to fill in.
I think they need to rest Gentry for ND and Utah. We are going to need him for those games. Assuming Curtis improves, we should be able to handle the next 5 games without Gentry. Unfortuntely, we could not handle SJS without him.
Save the Stork! Gentry’s become this lightning rod for the beleaguered Trojan D (remember watching him hopping out to midfield on one leg to encourage his teammates after he had been injured)! When he’s out there, he’s just fun to watch because he leads CFB in wingspans!
It’s Happened! STAN, CAL and SMU are headed to the ACC! ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips issued a statement in the announcement: “We are thrilled to welcome three world-class institutions to the ACC, and we look forward to having them compete as part of our amazing league. Throughout the evaluation process, the ACC Board of Directors, led by President Ryan, was deliberate in prioritizing the best possible athletic and academic experience for our student-athletes and in ensuring that the three universities would strengthen the league in all possible ways. Cal, SMU and Stanford will be terrific members of the ACC and… Read more »
So, now what happens to the PAC? Have no idea what the contracts say. If they can, MW will probably try a reverse merger to move the league to Power 5 status, thus converting the MW to the PAC.
That would be the logical move, then when their contract ends they can possibly upgrade some schools and get rid of the lesser ones. Once Stan and Cal sign up with the ACC they are locked in until 2036. Not a great move.
Steveg, I think Stanford and Cal would not have been able to schedule for football except within the Mountain West, which would have lead to a conference downgrade. As I have written before, I believe the Olympic and women’s sports were the drivers for this. I read some articles that the US Olympic team was lobbying hard for the move. I also read a quote from I think the UNC women’s soccer coach who was very much against the move because that coach had to recruit against Stanford for athletes and usually lost out. That coach wanted Stanford “to die… Read more »
Do you think George Kliavkoff skipped breakfast this morning? Wonder what he is trying to accomplish at this stage?
I suppose George is now taking vacation time and planning his next career move! Or retirement. What is Larry Scott now doing? Building a new home in the Pebble Beach area of Monterrey county?
Larry really should be in jail.
Unfortunately, he was slick enough to convince the uninvolved and obtuse Pac-12 presidents that he was worth all that thrown-away money for so many years, while at the same time they (especially schools like STAN and CAL) slowly but surely set in motion the conference’s eventual explosion, with USC finally lighting the charge.
George will be starring soon in one of those Southwest Airline commercials of a couple years ago–
Remember the ones where the actor/actorette would commit some major faux pas at work to their boss/co-workers or destroyed something at home (usually made by their kid)? The commercial would end with Southwest asking if the viewier “wanna get away?”
Seeing how Georgie K has overseen a hot mess ever since he jumped into the PAC-12 crap show, I think it would be a perfect opportunity for life to imitae art! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
SMU has a lot of Texas OIL Money
Just like a lot of us suspected
UTAH fan (The Athletic) — “We’re looking for a three-peat. We want to put the hurt on USC and UCLA for destroying the conference, and we’ve got a lot of new Big 12 teams to pay attention to in preparation for next season.”
Loved your line about Grinch “laying an egg” against SJS. Absolutely correct! For comparison, look how the Utah D looked last night! I thought SJS’s QB was better than FL AND probably better than either of the Utah subs. But other than him, I doubt any of the kids playing for SJS O would have started for FL. Utah is solid team, and they are going to be a load. UCLA gets them in I think two weeks in SLC. We should learn a lot about both teams in that game. SLC is a really tough place to play! Glad… Read more »
Is UCLA secretly poised for a better season, even with DTR in the NFL now?
The LAT has an article on Chip Kelly’s newfound congenial personality.
Apparently, the longtime curmudgeon suddenly found friendliness, especially with the media.
And former UCLA AA center Randy Cross is all shot up about how much UCLA has improved itself for this season on CBS Sports Network’s Inside College Football.
IMO, it will come down the to QB. I think Kelly is a very good coach (better than either present day Kiffin or Sark). I am interested to see what Chip does. He has a huge game against Utah in SLC in a couple of weeks. I will actually be rooting for UCLA in that one. I have come to dislike the Utes.
I think Choc Chip Kelly is definitely trying to react to Lincoln Riley’s phenomenal L.A. presence and prospects for success. Smart move. Being a grump loser in a front runner town doesn’t really work. JMHO.
I know Randy from years ago. (His son and my son worked out together in the off seasons as QB and Receiver when they both attended local private high schools here in Atlanta.) For a Bruin, he is a really nice guy and smart. But when it comes to the ucla, he wears pastel blue shaded glasses. Take his Bruin prognostications with a grain of salt.🙃
He’s starting to grow his thick gray hair much longer on Inside College Football. Cross, now 69 years old, will be in Mulletville before long.
Generally, he’s a pretty reasonable CFB voice, as are fellow Bruins Rick Neuheisel and Brian Jones.
Domer Aaron Taylor is more blatantly biased for ND on the panel. He’s already picked Sam Hartman as the Heisman winner over Caleb. Cross still picks Caleb for the award.
I don’t give much merit to Utah or BYU fans. They don’t know a lot about other teams and reality outside of state lines.
Screw em!
MINN beats NEB 13-10 with a walk-off 47-yd FG after a late game-changing pick. Great game.
NEB must think they have disappeared into some strange and endless football purgatory. The Huskers are 2-14 in one-score games during the last three years.
The fact that Nebraska was in the game till the end goes to show what a good coach they got in Ruhle. He will turn it around for the Huskers given time.
I was not impressed with either team. Look forward to playing the Huskers in the near future. My wife’s family is from Lincoln (her dad graduated from NEB). Went there for a family funeral years ago. Would like to return (in the fall; not the winter).
