Pac-12 Tournament: USC makes winning ugly work
The No. 3 seed Trojans, who open in the quarterfinals Thursday night, are 9-1 in games decided by five or fewer points this season
Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — Andy Enfield cheerfully objects to the idea that his USC team wins ugly at times. Sure, games might be close, but, he says with a smile, “I think wins are pretty.”
Nevertheless, winning ugly is exactly what USC has done this season. The Trojans are 9-1 in games decided by five points or fewer.
There was Boogie Ellis’ jumper with 0.2 seconds left to beat Washington State. And Drew Peterson’s 3-pointer to give USC the lead over Oregon with 11.5 seconds left and the Trojans stopping the Ducks twice to secure the win. And who can forget the intercepted in-bounds pass at the end of regulation against UCLA, which the Bruins nearly turned into a game-tying buzzer-beater?
This is not to poke holes in USC’s résumé. The 21st-ranked Trojans are 25-6 for many reasons. One is USC’s ability to pull out difficult wins, a talent that should come in use as the third-seeded Trojans begin the postseason Thursday in Las Vegas at the Pac-12 Tournament against the winner of Wednesday night’s late game between No. 6 seed Washington (16-14) and No. 11 Utah (11-19).
This is perhaps to be expected from a veteran team that went to the Elite Eight a year ago. The Trojans’ three NCAA Tournament wins were all by double digits, but USC learned how to play the type of team defense that wins games.
So if the Trojans put together timely shots with that level of defensive execution, Enfield reasons, the team will win most of its games, a theory that’s been proven out this year.
It’s that March experience from last year that has USC feeling confident entering the postseason now, compared to a year ago when Chevez Goodwin was the only player with NCAA Tournament experience.
“This year we can go in with a different mindset knowing what we need to do to get there,” point guard Ethan Anderson said. “This year, we hope to go farther than we did last year. So now we come in with experience, knowing that every possession counts.”
That lesson from last March has been reinforced numerous times this season as USC has put together the most regular-season wins in program history. Just last week, the Trojans got a reminder as their comeback attempt against UCLA fell short due to a missed layup and an untimely turnover in the final minute of the game.
But experience isn’t the only reason USC is confident in close games. The players trust teammates like Ellis, Peterson and Isaiah Mobley to score when the game is on the line, while Chevez Goodwin, Max Agbonkpolo and Anderson have proved they can hold down the fort defensively for key stops.
“I think we have players that just show up when it comes late to games,” Anderson said. “Winning is just the common goal. I think that’s why we’re going to make a big run here because we all understand if we lose two games, we’re going home.”

Close game demon USC wins 65-61, despite a massive 23 turnovers (season-high in case you wondered). Boogie Ellis (17, only Trojan in double figures) had a big 2nd half.
The only thing that saved us was the great defense we played in the second-half. The only other positive is that we continue to win close games which in previous years we would have lost.
Right now, I don’t have a lot of hope for us this March because we have played really poorly for the last two weeks and that is not the direction you want the team heading when you are getting ready for the tournament.
I don’t see this team beating UCLA tomorrow, but hope I’m wrong. USC is going to sure have to play better than the sloppy outfit that nearly lost to UW.
USC losing 39-36 at half. No flow on offense so far.
Has there been a scheduled released for Spring ball?

Thank you John.
Vastly increased energy and superior organization and planning: those are the new descriptions I hear about USC football the most from recruits since LR took over.
Lots of former players like Adoree Jackson and Nelson Agholor showing up to meet with kids on visits too.
It is wonderful to hear that SC Football is once again being competently lead. There is as much difference between HC (and HC’s matter hugely) as their is between players. Quite a difference moving from a 2 star HC to a 5 star HC.
Sure looks like Drake London is going to make a nice payday as most everyone has him going in the first round. Sadly, several writers see him going to the Jets.

Source: Georgia transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels is on a visit to Oregon State. He’s still expected to decide his eventual destination after spring ball, as he graduates from UGA later this spring and will enroll after that. Missouri and WVU are still expected to be in the mix.
Do you think JT would want to play against USC? Of course it all depends on the pass rush USC is going to come up with.
That reminds me of JT’s career at Mater Dei, when he passed for 12,014 yds with 152 TDs against only 14 picks over four years as the Monarch’s unquestioned superstar. He may have never even been sacked even once for all I know in HS., before enrolling at USC as the nation’s #1 prep in June 2018, and immed beating out Jack Sears and Matt Fink. He took over at USC and quickly started getting pummeled behind USC’s bad OL, missing one game due to a concussion during the Trojan’s lowly 5-7 2018 season. He then tore his ACL against… Read more »
Yes, perhaps we can see the deer in the headlights look again if USC comes up with the rush they need.
Shows how much I know. It looks like his three finalists are Oregon State, Missouri an WV. Of that group, I have no idea which would make the most sense, but personally, I would not want to play for a second tier SEC team as an immobile QB. I have no idea what WV will look like on O, only that the Big 12 has better Ds than the Pac 12. And, I think OSU is losing most of its OL.
Most good QBs seem to latch on pretty quickly once in the Portal. Not sure why JT hasn’t already landed, or if it’s him, or the schools.
I really don’t know how JT is viewed by the CFB coaches. His injury history and lack of mobility might be holding some schools off.
Personally, I’d like to see him in Corvallis. Go Beavers!
One additional point. What a great year for ex-SC QBs. Slovis may start at Pitt; Dart may start at Ole Miss; JT may start wherever; and Jack Sears may start wherever. Has any school ever had four transfer QBs start for four other programs?
LOL, no problem, “I think wins are pretty” I love that quote.
