USC’s Evan Mobley named to AP All-American second team
The freshman center is the 10th Trojan to earn the honor and the first since Sam Clancy in 2002
Adam Grosbard (OC Register) — USC center Evan Mobley added another honor to his list of accolades on Tuesday when he was named to the Associated Press All-American second team.
Mobley is the 10th Trojan to earn a spot on an AP All-American team, and the first since Sam Clancy in 2002. Clancy was also a second-team selection.
In his freshman season out of Rancho Christian, the 7-foot Mobley led USC in scoring (16.8), rebounding (8.6) and blocked shots (3.0). He played in every game, averaging 33.9 minutes, while leading the Trojans to a second-place finish in the Pac-12.
Mobley was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches, and also named Newcomer of the Year by the Associated Press. He was also named to the Pac-12 all-tournament team last week after averaging 26 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in two games.

So it looks Carroll’s (under more local heat than ever before) now gonna keep Wilson. Seems smart to me.
The immed future of Sam Darnold sure is interesting! Where will he end up?
The Bears and Andy Dalton — boy did they ever settle. It’ll never work.
Dalton used to be serviceable, now he’s just old. Desperation makes for stupid moves. I’d take a chance on Darnold before I sign dalton.
Makes no sense to me. The Bears made a good offer to Seattle for Wilson per all accounts, but Carroll, almost 70, pulled back. He’s too old to rebuild with a new QB, per his own words. He’ll try to make Wilson happy.
So I have no idea why Chicago didn’t make a huge run for Darnold, unless they just don’t think he’s that good. But Andy Dalton? Come on. It would feel hopeless to be a Bears fan now.
The interesting thing to watch now Allen will be how much damage and/or improvement has been created between Pete and Wilson. And then, the inevitable taking of sides from the players. 😍
Very true. Pete needs to bend over a little, and probably a lot. It’s time. His Super Bowl days are getting farther and farther away in the rear view. They can absolutely succeed without being real friends, like Brady and Belichick did for so many years. But if the players have to take sides, too bad. Seattle would then start slinking back to pre-Carroll. All Pete’s gotta do is build a better team around Wilson. These huge ego guys, like Pete, can be very stubborn, however. I’m afraid I’m on the side of Wilson here, big-time. Pete’s OL is just… Read more »
Too true about the OL situation. Pete was very stubborn at the end of his run for the Trojans also….
As a Vikes fan, I’m glad.
I truly can’t believe the Bears think they have rectified their QB problem with Andy Dalton. After going hard for, and losing the bid for HOFamer Russell Wilson, it would be like just telling your fans, “Okay. We give up.”
10 All-Americans in nearly 100 years of SC basketball? In sucla’s heyday in the 60s and 70s they regularly had 3 or so each year. Coaching helps but who says players don’t make a team? Or do each of you, presumably basketball-neophytes, not believe you could have won some games with the likes of Alcindor-Jabbar, Walton and Wicks. Or in football, we could have won with Leinart, Bush and White.
USC didn’t have Sam Gilbert as the team CFO in the 60’s and 70’s….
Having been a Trojan Basketball fan since the early 1970’s as Paul Westphal’s brother Bill (a forward for SC Basketball in the mid-1960s) was my High School’s Basketball Coach and my PE teacher in 12th Grade, Sucla always had a solid supporting cast for Alcindor-Jabbar and Walton. Keith/Jamaal Wilkes, Curtis Rowe, Sidney Wicks are a few names I remember. There were several others. The supporting cast that Westphal had was pretty good and it was not the case for Gus Williams when I was at SC. Now SC has Evan Mobley, but the supporting cast is mediocre at best. I… Read more »
Imagine having Gail Goodrich and Walt Hazzard in your backcourt at the same time. The talent in Westweird was truly overwhelming in the ’60’s/70’s.
I agree Allen. Off the top of my head which I prefer over “Googling”, a front court including Bill Walton, Curtis Rowe and Sidney Wicks was a daunting task for SC frontcourt guys like Mike Westra and John Lambert.
This is interesting, former President Obama likes USC to beat Kansas and Iowa but lose to Gonzaga in the Elite 8.
26-0 Gonzaga is such a huge favorite to win it all, often scoring 90-100 points in games, that this year’s MM is referred to by some as Gonzaga and everyone else.
John, that would obviously help the image of the USC Basketball Program. Hope springs eternal as the old cliche goes. ✌
Adoree Jackson has been released by the Tennessee Titans, so he never got to the second contract. I really thought Adoree, one of my favorite Trojans, would do better, despite his small stature. Will be interesting to see where he lands and for how much.
NFL.com — The Tennessee Titans are clearing a chunk of cap by releasing two notable players. Tennessee has released former first-round pick Adoree’ Jackson and 2020 starting tackle Dennis Kelly, the team announced Tuesday. The moves will save the Titans nearly $17 million in cap space in 2021, per Over The Cap. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who was released by the Saints on March 11, is expected to sign with the Titans, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per Jenkins’ agent Neil Schwartz. Jackson came to the Titans as the 18th overall pick of the 2017 draft out of USC, where… Read more »
I know it is hard to accept but what you see from this Trojan BB team is what you are going to get going into the Tournament. If the opposition plugs the lane, and dares USC to shoot from outside, along with missing their regular amount of free throws, this team will miss several shots that could have been game changers. If they win the first round take that as a big win and don’t have expectations of much more. It seems USC hires coaches that can only get you to a point, and you will not exceed that, for… Read more »
Steveg, Really hard to get excited about this team or SC BB. We all know that SC BB has zero chance of making to it the final 4. This team is about #25, which, unfortunately, is higher than our FB team. They may upset Kansas (because, as Allen notes, it is without three of its best players). And, scary as it is, Andy Enfield is a far better BB head coach than Clay is a FB head coach. And, although he got Pac 12 Coach of the Year, I still think Enfield is mediocre, but at least he is not… Read more »
I think the ORE ST HC deserved the Pac-12 Coach of the Year nod, with Enfield coming in at #2 or #3. Enfield really did have a heckuva massive rebuild in front of him to assemble this 2021 team. Of course, without Evan Mobley, USC wouldn’t even be going to the NCAA’s as usual, but Enfield, with the help of Mobley’s asst coach dad, managed to bring Evan on board, so more power to him. It will be interesting to see how USC does against a very depleted KU team. At least we don’t get them at full strength, so… Read more »
When his sons are gone I wonder if dad Mobley will stick around. I doubt it.
I agree with you Steveg. At least SC has had Isaiah for two years and Evan for one. I would like to have seen more of a “twin towers” approach on Offense ala David Robinson and Tim Duncan, but will take what we got. At least SC BB is back on the map thanks to all of the Mobleys.
Yesterday, USC actually played like, well, it had two players everybody else wished they had. I couldn’t believe Evan’s blocking presence. He’s so long and intelligent and has an ease to his game which belies his forceful power.
I’m really looking forward to the KU challenge. I haven’t a clue if USC can measure up though.
If the Trojan basketball team that beat BYU, also a 6 seed, and beat Oregon at home and beat UCLA at home, shows up on the floor Saturday then we should beat the play in winner handsomely. If that same team can show up against the likes of Kansas the Trojans can win that too and be an upset winner into the Sweet Sixteen. But can we get 75% accuracy from the foul line? Please make more free throws boys it can mean winning and losing in these types of games against these types of opponents. If we can make… Read more »
I agree, DMcD. It’s always free throws with this team. The Trojans go the the Charity Line and they channel their inner Wilt Chamberlain’s/Shaquille O’Neil’s….
Along with better FT shooting would ask for better perimeter defense.
When the above is clicking the Trojans are hard to beat.
Like to see more ball and player movement and less charging wildly at the basket.
The talent is there but have to play within themselves.
