USC’s Pac-12 football title hopes end in deflating loss to Oregon
The Trojans’ defense collapsed early and often under the Ducks’ explosive passing attack, ending any shred of consolation to a wildly disappointing season
The brutalized Trojans (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12) have dropped four of their past five games and have only city bragging rights and low bowl placement to play for with the equally shaky Bruins coming to the Coliseum on Saturday.
A rivalry game with such low stakes felt like an impossible scenario just five weeks ago. USC was 6-0 and still generating College Football Playoff talk.
But it was all a cruel gridiron mirage.
Luca Evans (OC Register) — EUGENE, Ore. – There was nothing left for USC to do, at this point, except throw up their hands.
It started Saturday night with one Bo Nix pass to Troy Franklin, the Oregon receiver spinning away from USC’s Max Williams and dodging through the arms of fellow safety Calen Bullock, taking a grab for 77 yards on just the second play of the game.
It continued with a crossing route to the Ducks’ Troy Franklin the very next drive, such open space in the Trojans’ secondary that Franklin sped for an 84-yard score, a couple NFL scouts in the press box laughing at the disaster unfolding on the Autzen Stadium turf below them.
And after the third massive bomb of the first half, cornerback Domani Jackson given not an ounce of safety help as Franklin got behind him for a 63-yard grab, Jackson held his palms out to the heavens.
He walked over to safety Max Williams, engaging in a visibly-heated discussion for a couple minutes. Seeming completely, and utterly, lost.
“Those are the plays we wish we had back,” defensive end Solomon Byrd said postgame.
There’s been all too many of those plays this season, the plays USC receiver Tahj Washington said postgame with which they “eliminate themselves,” breaks head coach Lincoln Riley has preached for weeks could have drastically shifted USC’s fortunes by going their way.
And they drowned USC’s season for a final time in Eugene Saturday night, an affair that felt almost anticlimactic, scouts all gone by the fourth quarter of a 36-27 loss that emphatically ended any hopes at a shot in the Pac-12 title game.
An eerie sense of finality had settled in by the final buzzer, players walking off the field at Autzen not with tears or slouching but jaws set, resigned to fate of a season that had taken a left turn somewhere before Arizona State in September and never reversed course. Byrd, one of the stalwart leaders on this Trojans’ defense, posted a sobering message on Twitter shortly after the game’s end: “Sorry Nahmi,” referring to his daughter, “I hope daddy did enough.”
“I just hope I did enough,” Byrd said postgame, “to take care of my family.”
Hope vanished in front of tens of thousands at Autzen licking their chops, smelling blood from a limping defensive unit, doomed by the same defensive questions that had plagued them since fall camp and culminated in a messy divorce with coordinator Alex Grinch. And in the first half, there was no shred of visible change, in demeanor or success of scheme, with Brian Odom and Shaun Nua as interim co-coordinators and without Grinch patrolling the sidelines.
This defense was dealt a bad hand already on Saturday: down starting nickelback Jaylin Smith, down starting linebacker Eric Gentry, down cornerbacks Ceyair Wright and Jacobe Covington and Zion Branch. Riley, postgame, said some members of his starting secondary were “probably about 70% right now.”
“I don’t think that’s an excuse,” Byrd said postgame.
Whatever rotation of secondary fill-ins – little-used Tre’Quon Fegans and Prophet Brown, even freshman wide receiver Makai Lemon starting the second half at cornerback in a return to high school two-way days – Oregon’s Heisman-candidate QB Bo Nix sliced them up, ending the first quarter an almost-unfathomable 2-of-3 for 162 yards and finishing with four touchdowns.
At the end of a long and methodical third-quarter opening drive, Nix rolled right to find Franklin again, so open in the end zone he would’ve reasonably had the space to check the time before getting tackled. Safety Bullock, the defender closest to him, again held his hand out for a moment – searching for an explanation that didn’t exist, a USC team consistently befallen by an inability to execute simple defensive principles.
USC entered the second half down just 22-14, though, thanks to quarterback Caleb Williams’ most unhinged performance yet. He operated like a mad scientist in a collapsing pocket, weaving and circling and testing the limits of comprehension of successful quarterbacking, extending enough plays to lead a couple touchdown drives and keep the game close as Oregon shot itself in the foot on multiple occasions with penalties. Down by a couple scores after that Franklin touchdown, though, Williams had a miscommunication with running back Austin Jones on a handoff, the ball squeaking free and Ducks falling on it to completely deflate any USC momentum.
Oregon running back Bucky Irving – who finished with 118 yards on the night – ended a subsequent drive with a dagger of a score. And USC’s sideline was gaunt, players hunched over, a season that started with dreams of a national championship ending in a bottomless pit of defensive ineptitude.
USC did lose by just nine points with a banged-up defense a few days after it fired the long-beleaguered Grinch. But it’s hard to put much stock into that because Oregon didn’t even play that well. The Ducks committed 13 penalties for 120 yards and were sloppy, and it still didn’t feel like they were threatened at any point in the second half.
“You have to do a lot of good things to be there, too,” Riley said postgame, in reference to being in a position to beat Utah and Washington. “We have, and that’s the tough part to swallow. We haven’t gotten over the hump. That’s obviously what you’re defined on. And we haven’t done a good enough job.”
Oregon’s staff sleeps, eats and breathes recruiting and is simply better at it than USC’s staff. Riley will have to evaluate that dilemma intensely this offseason, and it should be a significant factor in his defensive coordinator search because there’s a good chance the Trojans are going to have to beat Dan Lanning and Tosh Lupoi for any and every major defensive recruit they covet.

Lanning rumored to TAM.
Using that to get a raise from Uncle Phil.
Next rumor will be Kiffen, his agent will get him a big raise also.
Kiffy wants every job but the one he has … just a fraud
Web talk out there that Eric Gentry won’t play against UCLA. Hope it’s not true.
After seeing that amazing pick vs Utah, maybe Gentry should had been a wide out. The linebacker deal just doesn’t work for that body.
Btw, since our 2 pt plays stink and LR is now wasting downs with useless Kiffy fades to our smallest receivers … how about lobbing one up to the 6’6 Duce . Just a thought.
Clay Helton has dropped to 6-4 after GA SO lost to MARSHALL 38-33 yesterday.
The Cat never fails to disappoint! He sure knows how to pull his weight. And now he has armed guards.
I’ve seen The Cat at the Masters the past two years. No doubt guest of Haden or Swann since those two are somehow members of Augusta CC. Anyway, my son, being the gentleman he is, says ‘Fight On Coach’. I haven’t been able to and will not though I did say ‘Fight On’ to Swann, just because I remember what an amazing player he was at SC and for the Steelers.
Did Swann give you a “Fight On!” back?
You should have asked him for his autograph. Then you’d have another famous scribble to go along with your precious Kiffin and Sark ones! 😂 😂
Swannie did … and looked very pleased.
LOL don’t do the autograph thing that’s for kids only. Though in 2007 after SC shutout ND in South Bend, my young sons and I joined the SC crowd greeting the team as they went to the buses. We took great pictures with Pete, Cush, Rey and Mark Sanchez. They couldn’t have been more gracious. The boys were getting autographs too, when one of my son’s walked over to Suck … I said ‘You don’t want his’ Suck looked at me like ‘what’ lol.
I only have one autograph from anyone, ever I would say.
Anthony Davis signed that all-time great SI cover of him ruining the Irish on that one special day in 1974. He loves to do these things, and being such a favorite player of mine, I couldn’t resist.
That beauty is a whole different deal … I have that one too (not signed by AD)
Looks like his twin brother is the mounty (or whatever they are) on his right.
Every time I sign in I scroll down the story to reach the place to post. In this case I see the Oregon coach, who strikes me as a shady character with a sneering smile. I officially don’t like him.
Now that I got that childish thought out of my head, I originally logged on to say I believe SC will beat Ucla Saturday. It’s just a tradition. I am starting to think the Trojans will play in the Holiday Bowl, which is my neck of the woods. I can get there by train.
🚆
Lanning is definitely capable of the big sneer. Since he just kicked our butts, I just look forward to a payback someday (though some speculate he’d jump at the A&M job). In 2025, we meet them again in Autzen. Seems like we are always there.
Hopefully, UW takes him down again in the championship game.
Despite all our problems, I do believe USC will beat UCLA this Saturday, even though it’s like this dark cloud has slowly permeated throughout the program over the last several weeks. All these tough defeats and near-losses against going-nowhere teams, coupled with the realization that LR and Jen Cohen have so many things to fix for USC to be any good, have cast an unsettling public pall of sorts over USC football. I expect USC’s players to fight big-time to beat UCLA, even harder than usual. In a historic rivalry game such as this, especially between two under-pressure coaches and… Read more »
Wow Allen I sure hope after USC kicks butt on the Ruins it will lift out of your depressing funk. Cheer up brother, brighter days are ahead.
I’m not depressed at all. Not sure why you think I would be in any funk whatsoever simply because USC football is suffering. It’s not my problem, that’s for sure. I accepted that USC wasn’t that good pretty long ago. And I’ve long thought and posted here that LR was a one-trick pony who had big gaps as a HC. Actually, I’m greatly relieved for USC football now that The Cat’s (no relation to Clay) finally all the way out of the bag about LR’s weaknesses and need to improve his approach to fixing USC football. Whether he does or… Read more »
Caleb deserves a win in his final game at USC
Absolutely. I sure hope he gets it. What a fantastic representative of the Trojans. Can’t wait to see him take on the Bruins for the last time. Was at a lunch gathering today and some SC people were there. Of course, the big game last night was discussed and LR definitely has some work to do based on the “rolled eyes” and remarks about the team. But nobody had much negative to say about Caleb, though people wish he’d throw quicker and had a better offensive line. USC’s now infamous defense was scorched by all. Laughing and joking about it… Read more »
From Yahoo sports website UCLA at USC Sat, Nov 18, Time: TBD
Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
USC -6 O/U 65.5
Good news HOF19, kick off is 12:30pm on ABC. We can enjoy our Saturday night after a beat down of the Ruins.
Anyone paying attention to recruiting knows the story. Oregon (and others) give out large sums of NIL to incoming freshman and we do not. We have a different NIL philosophy, and it is costing us. This staff recruits hard, how many times are we in top three of our targets? Pretty much all of them. Riley is a good recruiter but we are in a new age. Riley talked about jumping on the rocket ship or watching it fly right by. Riley and Jen need to not play scared, we need to lean into our collectives and let our priority… Read more »
A respected coaching staff is one side of the coin. NIL is the other. It would nice to know what USC’s philosophy is and what is really happening in the real world. Is Folt demanding a follow the strict rules? Does Riley only want to offer for proven results after they arrive? How much independence do the Collectives have? Clearly up front pay for play deals are the practice to get 5* players. No body is policing it. SC better be in line with the top programs or it will be doomed. Oregon is snatching talent from SoCal. Utah bench… Read more »
With a good staff on hand that will be a big help locking down recruits. USC has seemed deathly afraid to do what the other schools are doing and it is starting to show. If USC cannot come up with the $$ to get into the game then do not expect much in the way of top echelon players and I think some lessons have been learned on going the portal route. We got a few gems but several have not lived up to the hype, plain and simple. I do not envy Riley for the position he is in… Read more »
Utah bench warmers are not driving free trucks. (BYU is even worse). Oregon players are getting all of that and then some.
Yes, it seems like college football is becoming “pay for play.” The school and the education offered is less and less of an inducement for those seeking a pro career. And, of course, the TP (free agency) ensures there is less of an attachment to the school. We now have one or two year players who live in apartments downtown, so there is less of an opportunity to interact with the schools and everything it can offer. The end result will be a minor league pro game with little attachment or meaning to the university. Kind of sad the sport… Read more »
I truly hope that the loss to Oregon will become the most significant “victory” defeat since Stanford routed Clay Helton’s Trojans two years ago, leading to Helton being fired. SC was simply not in the same class as Oregon and it was obvious. Caleb was running for his life most of the game and made some unbelievable plays. Our D, as was to be expected, was simply overmatched. Oregon punted ONE time all game. Let that sink in. SC punted four times. Oregon outgained SC by about 200 yards (560 to 380). Let that sink in. We were lucky for… Read more »
There are some things that really stood out about last night’s game. With Oregon making mistakes right and left, it’s obvious they need work too. In the era of stealing signals and signs I wonder if the defensive coaches have engaged the practice. I thought there were many times in the past few games where the defense was playing as if their scheme was mirrored from the correct alignment. Maybe the person behind the theft of the sign took a selfie in front of the white board with play diagram, which reversed the image. The defense has had three disconcerting… Read more »
In the last 2 years USC has gone from a bad Power 5 football program to average. Which means the Trojans can beat all but a couple Group of 5 teams (not the Tulanes) and all but the top 20 Power 5. Watching last night was not fun at all. Oregon has O and D linemen that are bigger and stronger than SC. The SC defensive secondary is clueless. Oregon has a lot of guys from Southern California. So, what does USC need? In order to get 5* talent you need 2 things. First, respectable coaches that players feel confident… Read more »
Getting called out or mocked by Lanning, calling your program 7on7’ (soft) better be a wake up call for LR to get his **** together. His reputation took a big hit and his credibility is being questioned. Is he another huckster like F ing Kiffin or is he a real football coach. The schedule was at ND, Utah, Wash, at Oregon. He lost every one! Manhandled twice and choked off the other two. A big time fail. And barely squeaked by in 3 other games. Next season LSU, at Michigan, ND, PennSt, at Washington, UCLA, and Wisconsin. Seeing at least… Read more »
Where did he say that SC is a “7on7” program? I can’t find it. SC is soft. The conditioning program is run by a bunch of towel waivers. I figure SC goes 7-5 next year. That’s if they get bigger and stronger in the trenches and the defense is well coached.
Never mind, found it.

I’ve never seen a full-on shining star coach drop as far and as fast as Lincoln Riley.
Maybe he’s better suited for the ups and downs of Hollywood, especially now that he lives out here.
TAM is moving on from Jimbo, despite a $70mm buyout. It’s clear to me that LR is but an OC and he isn’t immersed in recruiting. He obviously can’t make the tough decisions required of a HC. He has insulted the alumni base with his comments about an “untrained eye.” He continues to assert that SC is “close” when the OLine and Defense are both incapable of performing at a high level. LR relies too much on the TP and has mediocre recruiting classes. I could go on, but LR is hardly a choice to return SC football to the… Read more »
Jimbo can go back and watch his entire national title year … right now, LR has Caleb’s run vs Texas 2 years ago, Foreman’s pick and that flea flicker vs Udub.
I’ll take 1 more USC national title.
Can you imagine getting $75+ mil to leave your job?
I wonder if he’d trade that in a heartbeat to still be in coaching? Or does he figure he just fleeced the industry and has it made for life? He’s only 58.
Will he ever coach a big-time program again? Or is he headed for Clay Helton land?
Brother, can you spare a dime?
I am really glad I chose sleep over another frustrating late night watching our undersized, under-coached and “under-tough” Trojans get beat-up again. Looks like the game was not as close as the score indicated. I get another surprise trip to LA next week, and the bonus is I get to see my first USC-ucla game in person since 1992. Caleb’s last game. What a colossal waste of his talent thanks to Lincoln “I have trained eyes” Riley and Alex “Christmas–I’ll steal your whole damn season” Grinch. I will be surprised if Riley will turn it around when we go to… Read more »
Besides a couple of only Caleb type throws and scrambles and Tahj catch and runs. You didn’t miss much. Same crap otherwise. Maybe Lanning’s not so cocky ‘I thought we would beat these guys by 40’ look.
No secret we need bigger, tougher players.
Why is Donte still employed.
Riley stated the schedule was tougher than last year ……dude…..next year you’ve got a minimum 8 losses right now unless you pull your head out of your ass.
Donte just coaches the CBs. Grinch coached the safeties and created the D scheme. Donte may not be the best coach, but he certainly is one of the best recruiters. And is the CB play a function of the scheme?
The pass coverage … the entire scheme is a complete joke. Just clueless.
That’s on Grinch, not Donte!
Tirebitter, I think the correct conclusion is we just do not know how good a coach Donte is. You are absolutely correct that Donte worked for Grinch, and Grinch provided the scheme that Donte was required to teach. So, we do not know whether Donte is a problem or if Grinch is the problem. We do know Donte is by far the best recruiter on the staff and the staff is weak on recruiting (probably an LR issue). I have no idea how this will play out. My take is SC should hire a well respected DC and let him… Read more »
Agree with what you stated!
Donte is a great recruiter and my hope would be that he can be a great DB coach. Maybe the new DC can evaluate him and work with him.
So you want second rate coaches that are good recruiters. Development is what differs the programs today….everybody has cash. Our guys don’t even try to turn toward the ball.
Nice spin. Not at all what I was saying.
You stated….he may not be the best coach…..what spin
