USC hires UCLA’s D’Anton Lynn as defensive coordinator
The Trojans poach a major face from their cross-town rival in the type of all-in move that could completely turn the tides of a program coming off a disappointing season
Luca Evans (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — With growing smoke around USC’s future, the program going down in flames after a disastrous 7-5 season in Coach Lincoln Riley’s second year, the first fire to extinguish was a looming question mark at defensive coordinator.
And for two weeks, flames burned, the fan base’s confusion increasing as the clock slowly ticked toward the transfer portal’s opening this coming Monday. But patience paid dividends – as a complete bombshell dropped, ironically, directly as the Pac-12 championship game got underway.
On Friday evening, news broke that USC hired D’Anton Lynn away from UCLA, a home run hire hugely impactful for USC’s present and future and the type of all-in move that could completely turn the tides of a program coming off a disappointing season. The school announced the hiring a few hours later, and a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed Lynn’s deal has been signed. Lynn’s contract at UCLA was worth $1.02 million; the source confirmed Lynn signed a more lucrative deal with USC.
“We are thrilled to welcome D’Anton and his family to USC,” Riley said in a statement Friday night. “We simply couldn’t ask for a better addition to our staff. His successful experiences in both college and the NFL make him the perfect fit for our program.”
It’s a hire that adds credibility to Riley’s emphatic statements about USC’s commitment to defense in early November, a day after the firing of coordinator Alex Grinch, who had hopped on the plane with Riley from Oklahoma to Southern California and had been the butt of criticism for two years over consistently underwhelming units. Riley’s faith in Grinch, starting his second and potentially last season with Caleb Williams at quarterback, was admirable at the time, but misplaced in hindsight – promoting staffers Shaun Nua and Brian Odom to co-interim coordinator came too late, and USC was steamrolled by both Oregon and UCLA in consecutive losses to end the year.
“I have complete belief and conviction, we will play great defense here,” Riley said, after Grinch’s firing. “It is going to happen.”
It was harder to believe, then. Easier, now. In just one season at UCLA after serving as the safeties coach for the Baltimore Ravens, Lynn led a complete defensive turnaround after years of futile units under Chip Kelly, a program that finished 92nd in opponent points per game in 2022 becoming one of the staunchest units in the country in 2023.
The Bruins finished eighth nationally in yards per play allowed (4.55) and 16th in scoring defense (18.1 ppg) and held USC to 3 rushing yards, posted four sacks and forced two turnovers in a 38-20 victory over the Trojans last month. Lynn got elite performances, in particular, out of members of UCLA’s secondary like Alex Johnson and John Humphrey, a welcome sign for a USC cornerback group that too often was torched for explosive plays this past season. He was named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, honoring college football’s top assistant coaches, for his efforts.
“He’s really poised, he’s very detailed, he has a plan and has really gotten our guys to execute the plan,” Kelly said Nov. 15. “He’s really moved this defense in a real positive direction, and I think his way about him, how he teaches in the meeting rooms, how he meets and what he does in one-on-ones, how he communicates what he wants done – I think he’s outstanding.”
The question, now, is whether Lynn will have the talent to mold an elite defense for USC in 2024, and whether success will carry over against a Big Ten schedule. He comes from a natural background in the conference, a four-year player at Penn State; but the Trojans’ incoming defensive freshman class is fairly weak, and it’s fair to wonder whether the length of the search will cost USC when it comes to elite transfer portal players who already announced their decision to change schools.
“I’m not gonna sacrifice anything for getting the right person,” Riley said of the recruiting window in early November. “That’s the most important thing, because these are decisions that have a long-ranging impact on our program, and it’s a decision you don’t make lightly in the first place.”
For UCLA, it’s a crippling blow to a rapidly-collapsing program, with vitriol over Kelly’s job security and a recent announcement from highly-touted freshman quarterback Dante Moore that he was hitting the transfer portal. The announcement appeared to blindside a host of UCLA players – take William Nimmo Jr.’s tweet “Wow…” or Kamari Ramsey and Kain Medrano’sexploding head emojis.
For USC, however, it’s a hire that can galvanize donors who were altogether unhappy with the defense’s performance under Grinch. There is plenty for Lynn to prove – a glittering defensive resume was built in part by a cushy schedule against weak units, and the Bruins gave up 33 points to Cal and 36 to Oregon State – but on basic principles, his arrival sparkles. USC gave up the 17th-most rushing yards of 133 FBS schools; UCLA gave up the second-fewest, holding opponents to a stifling 2.3 yards per carry.
USC doesn’t have defensive line talent like Laiatu Latu or the Murphy twins, to be sure. But promising defensive tackle Bear Alexander returns – dropping a “Welcome let’s get it coach” on social media – and USC has already extended a transfer portal offer to former University of Pennsylvania defensive tackle Joey Slackman.

https://www.yardbarker.com/college_football/articles/usc_hc_lincoln_riley_making_strong_push_for_star_qb_in_transfer_portal/s1_16541_39620388 I thank Riley for having Caleb, we would’ve been a whole lot worse without him. I’m not saying having a QB is not important, what I am saying is that image is important to turning over this program. SC’s program is a QB, WR factory. We need to concentrate on developing players. We don’t need QB’s and WR’s in the portal, we need to stay at home and develop our recruits because the talent is already there at those positions! If you want quality defensive recruits and transfer portal players you have to show those guys you are committed… Read more »
In the 2017-18 season the CFP committee put Alabama in the playoffs when they hadn’t even won their division. Alabama went on to win the NC. Hate Alabama but the committee got it right then and they got it right today. I’m picking Alabama to win it all again.
Hey John, great job, again. If I had done this contest alone I would have been out in two weeks, but my wife kept me under control until the bitter end, when I finally got to lose it all. What fun going broke and not losing anything.
Most first-year DCs don’t get heavily publicized raves from the press. They just don’t because of their inexperience, usually it takes them much longer, and in Lynn’s case, because the Bruins don’t usually attract that much attention anyway. Plus he’s so young to have become such a prominent asst, at least in my eyes. As I said here earlier, Lynn was my number one choice for USC from mid-season on. While I’m certainly no scout by any means, I started watching all the Bruin games because the word was out that Lynn had completely and stupendously revitalized UCLA’s D. Once… Read more »
The words you described in the beginning are the words that describe the hire. Lack of experience, publicized, and it’s gonna take him longer. Experience, and publicize translate into better recruits, and transfer portal players, and less time to build a defense. I’m SC I’ll pay for the best HC in Riley when the major problem all along has been a deficiency in defense, but I won’t pay for the best DCð¤·♀️! Same senario at OU for LR too stubborn to realize what it takes to win and be elite in college football. It’s not rocket science to look at… Read more »

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE CONTEST AND BEING GOOD SPORTS ABOUT WINNING AND LOSING.
Let me know if you are interested in a Bowl Contest. I will pick out 10-15 bowl games and simply have you pick the winner (no points involved) and whoever picks the most winners will win.
John, thanks for running the contest…..it was fun.

The #1 Guarantee out of all of this ???…..By Monday morning some fan base WILL BE Screaming “We Was Robbed !!!!!” . Somebody is gonna come out of this PISSED !!!!!
When you have 5-6 very good teams and 4 spots somebody will be robbed. Thankfully this 4 team nonsense is over and we get to 12 next year. What it should have been 50 years ago.
And it will be either Texas or Alabama. The committee can’t eliminate an undefeated Big Five conference champion, so Michigan, Washington & FSU are in. Who gets the last spot? Texas should get in beating BAMA earlier in the season.
ALA is more different and improved from any team I’ve seen this year since early in the season. Typical Saban stuff. I’m jealous of their program and success, so it’s not like I was rooting for ALA to beat GA today. ALA lost to TEXAS way, way back on Sept. 9, when most of the universe actually thought USC was a potentially great team. Seems like a long time ago, too long to keep a much-improved team out of a playoff. TEXAS lost to two-loss OU. Why doesn’t that kick the Longhorns out? Because they look like they belong in… Read more »
I have been bouncing around all the Channels talking about College Football over the last 30 minutes and they are ALL saying The Committee AIN’T gonna have an easy day Tomorrow.
Sorry but this year the CFP committee picks the top 5 regardless of record or even whether they are conference champs. It will be Michigan, Washington, Texas and Alabama. Florida St fans will be screaming and crying. Next year will be better. Sorry Rose Bowl, you get Washington – Texas. This years NC will go to Alabama over Texas..
I think FSU isn’t as good as Texas or Bama without Travis, but they still deserve to get it over both. They win every game on their schedule. Put em in.
Sorry, I’m not putting in a team I think is gonna get totally smoked in the playoffs just because they’re 13-0. Watching blowout PO games sucks.
I truly feel bad for the ‘Noles, but based on what I saw today, they are not one of the top four CFB teams. So glad we are moving to 12-team playoffs next year.
Iowa is the best team in the B1G West? I can’t wait for USC to go B1G. If you can’t run through them, run around them. Mich and Penn St will be great games next year, I hope we bring a defense. I think our 2023 USC team would have beaten Louisville by more than FL St did
If FL ST and louisville are the best from the ACC then the ACC is pretty weak. Stanford and Cal will fit into the ACC just fine, but neither team is playoff caliber.
FSU looks broken on offense. But they are undefeated. Can they beat anyone with a second or third string QB? Don’t know. But if they get a month to prepare it will help.
I hate to say it, but against this year’s USC defense, they’d score at least 24. And along the way, we’d make their QB look like a Heisman candidate while they discovered running back and wide receiver talent they didn’t know they had.
Michigan may end up the #1 seed but man are they boring to watch. If you love defensive struggles you will love the BIG10. I can’t wait to see what the west coast teams bring to the Big. A stout D with a west coast O will blow out the Big. Gonna need a big strong O Line to do it. Note to Riley, you better make sure you have a good place kicker. He will win games.
IA/MI announcers just now saying USC should back Brinks truck up to door of Iowa DC. Must’ve missed the news that USC is no longer in the market for a DC.
Ya, they are like mostly strangers to us. We do have some history with some of them, like MI, tOHS, Iowa, Penn St. It is going to be interesting having to adjust to new teams. I don’t mind the half price Huskies, but the discount ducks really annoy me.
This committee vote is going to be a lot of fun. To bad they don’t televise the vote meeting. True reality TV. From what I have seen this season, Alabama would never lose to Texas now. They have improved more than anyone I have seen. Georgia showed they are a good team with a mediocre QB, Alabama is a good team with a better QB.
Guys doing SEC Championship game spent about 8 minutes during the half discussing a National Championship playoff with 4 teams but NONE of the four being an SEC Team. (Bama winning 20-10 right now about to start 4th Quarter).
No one who is a TV talking head seems to think we can have a 4-team playoff without an SEC team. Both GA and ALA look pretty darn good, with ALA winning 20-17 with 10 mins to go. Admittedly, it does give a peculiar look to a grouping that would otherwise include MICH, UW, TEXAS, and the undefeated, but disrespected ‘Noles (if they beat LOUIS today). Picking this year’s top 4 is a mess, if GA loses to ALA today. Somebody, either TEXAS, ALA (if they beat GA), or FSU (if they beat LOUIS) is gonna complain for all-time that… Read more »
I agree that ALA has no complaint because they lost to TEXAS. But I also think ALA would beat FSU on the field, so it’s a good example of why we need a 12-team playoff. Saban thinks he took “care of business” today, but it was Sark who took care of Saban in Tuscaloosa way back on Sept. 9, 34-24. What an amazing field we have this year. GA and ALA each lose only one game, and neither “deserves” to get into the POs. I’m glad to see Sark and TEXAS looking like they made it. Sark has come an… Read more »
Another benefit of Lynn, based upon his experience as a player and coach, is his connections to top position coaches, both from the pros and college ranks. PC and coach O ( USC & LSU) were examples of the well connected who assembled all star staffs. It may take Lynn some time, but that asset is incredibly valuable . Let’s hope LR lets him piece together a powerful D staff. The kids need a new start.
The more I dig into it, the more I’m convinced this is a really good hire. The guy has NFL experience as both a player and coach. He has played under Joe Paterno. He coached under John Harbaugh, Gus Bradley, Romeo Crenell, and Rex Ryan. In his first shot at being a DC, he was a home run. He knows what great defense and what great players look like. The only question mark for me is how will he recruit? Thats a 24/7 grind that I hope he id up for. I’m excited to find out.
He’s the highest paid DC in the BIG10. When does USC have the best defense in the BIG10? LR is within pennies of being the highest paid HC in the BIG10. These guys better start to showing their value. And what is Josh Henson’s real role? Is OC a title only? At 48 is he LR’s protege? Is he the next Offensive Guru or a glorified O Line coach?
I don’t expect a one year jump into top 15 defense, but it will be a huge jump none the less. It would be awesome to have a great defense, but we only need it to be competent to win. We had two absolutely horrible offensive games, all others would be wins with an average defense.
I think Chris, with a couple of staff changes he can get some brand name help in the recruiting area. Donte will be given new schemes so perhaps his DB’s won’t make him look so bad. Perhaps the new D philosophy will be to look back for the ball. Lynn knows pass defense. The recruiting this year may not be that big of a change but coming years could be huge based on how our defense turns around. Will he improve tackling is the big question. Of course USC still needs to get into the $$ in recruiting, or else… Read more »
I want to see how Coach Lynn affects LR’s recruiting. I then want to see the defense learn to tackle. Finally I want to see depth being built on the defensive side.
Too be brutally honest I think we could have done better, I hope I’m gonna eat my words, but seems like a rushed hire to me. How many Bruin defenders will hit the transfer portal on Monday? How many defensive de-commits will they have? Too be honest I looked at a lot of there commits and they are 3 star recruits. I get the importance of the recruiting train however I have to say a name and the program from which he came from means more in the long run. BTW UCLA’s strength of schedule was garbage this year. If… Read more »
I think your take is way off base. Lynn proved last year he was a good, if not great DC. He is young, black, and with NFL experience, as well as a father who was a head coach in the league. Lynn is going to recruit defensive players at a premium level. This takes some heat off of Riley, and really wounds are hated rival.
What is not to like?
I think you are missing the point. I’m not saying the Lynn did not do a good job at UCLA. My point is that we could have afforded to pay for a name at DC. That’s how you get guys to flip in recruiting, and that’s what attracts recruits, and transfer portal players is a name, and the program from which they came from. Recruits and transfer portal players do there homework too. They are looking for coaches that have coached top notch programs and defenses. We are moving to the Big-10 and that’s where that hire should have come… Read more »
Why pay more money for a better-known DC if you think a different up-and-coming DC will do a better job?
Getting the best man for the job is much more important than getting a big name. LR chose Lynn, whose totally revamped Bruin defense just beat the crap out of USC. Good move LR!
Better name better recruits. Better name would mean he is the best man for the job especially if he came from a better more highly touted program. Like the Big 10.
Maybe these so-called “better names” didn’t want the USC job for a variety of reasons, many of which have been well-publicized, such as geography, or intent to look harder at an NFL or CFB head coaching job. Maybe they just didn’t want to work for Riley as his offense puts a lot of pressure on D, and LR’s already lost national stature in only year two as USC’s coach. There’s absolutely no reason to suggest Lynn won’t be an attractive coach to players who want to perform on good defenses. And I totally reject the idea that a “better name… Read more »
Allen how do think we got all the offensive recruits we got when LR came here do you think that just happened out of the blue? It happened because LR is a name and a brand from Nationally touted program at OU. Allen also all the better names are not all going to be HC’s there not all going be worried about geography. And there was quite a long list. Also a couple of former SC players who have been NFL coaches as well who have better resumes. I’m also gonna say that LR doesn’t want to hire someone that’s… Read more »
How many Bruin defenders will hit the Portal come Monday and get picked up by the Trojans? Will Bruin recruits change their commits? This should be fun. Not to throw water on the fire but the Bruins did have a pretty cushy schedule that padded Lynn’s stats.
Lynn took what ucla had and turned it around, that is the bottom line. Lynn has the creds to take USC to new heights on defense there is no question. Even Georgia had a soft schedule, but that doesn’t discount their DC talent. I am hoping to see flips for a few players and perhaps a few from the portal, like Joey Slackman. Lets see what he does for staff now, will he keep Nua and Odom or is he going elsewhere. There are already rumors out there. Lots of fun.
UCLA is not Georgia, and the SEC is a completely different animal than the Pac-12 especially with the talent of recruits. Georgia defensive players far exceed that of UCLA! I have looked at UCLA’s commits they are 3 star. I do not see this hire as flipping commits, and if LR puts priority on a QB and WR in the portal and not defense and O-line this is a wash. Not saying Lynn didn’t do a good job at UCLA the point is SC could have done a better job on the DC hire and not rushed it and gone… Read more »
One of the reasons Lynn took the job outside of significantly more money, is that USC has both a higher ceiling and a higher floor than UCLA. Lynn should be able to help attract better players to USC if branding and history mean anything. UCLA’s D was a total pile of crap in 2022. Under Lynn, they went to #1 in the Pac-12, one of the better conferences in the country this year. More importantly, to me at least, was how they looked when I saw them play. They were so much more physical and aggressive in 2023. You could… Read more »
Donte Williams has to go as the DB/Safeties coach. And I am not so keen on Manning or Odom. Nua might be OK if Lynn gets him pepped up. He always looks too comfortable & relaxed all the time. He needs a Coach O attitude to get his players inspired. If Lynn decides he needs to clean house on the defensive coaching crew then I am all for it.
I think your take is completely off. Lynn was one of the best available candidates. He is young, played and coached in the NFL, like his father. He is going to be a great recruiter, and he has proved he can make a significant difference in one year. And I don’t think Jim Leonard was a serious candidate, because he wants to live in the Midwest and coach in the league.
Some people are never happy, but I am thrilled with this hire.
Oh I forgot to mention- we also took away fucla’s best coach.
Diaz, PSU, Minter MI, Knowles OSU, Parker IW, Gibson NCSt, Arenett Miss St, Fisher former SC player defensive coach. Jack Del former NFL coach SC player. Not all of those guys are gonna be HC’s nor stay with there teams, and all of them have bigger resumes, and will attract more recruits. The recruiting is the main key!! Names bring recruits and so do the success of the programs and the history of the coach.
BTW Georgia’s DC’s were also in the picture, P.S. why would anybody be happy with wasting an All American QB and his entire time at SC with a top 5 offense and garbage pail defense. Just saying. Defense wins championships not offense.

Dillon Gabriel anybody?
As far as transfer portal QBs, Riley Leonard from Duke would be great but I hope LR gives Malachi Nelson a chance.
Give it the old “eye test”, and Florida State is #5. Louisville was pathetic and Florida barely got by them. The strength of the ACC is minimal.
They say that Florida St will have its starting QB back prior to the playoffs. Would you still think they were 5 with the other QB. Just wondering.
In the 2017-18 season the CFP committee put Alabama in the playoffs when they hadn’t even won their division. Alabama went on to win the NC. Hate Alabama but the committee got it right then and they got it right today. I’m picking Alabama to win it all again.

I’m digging this Will Howard portal … no way can LR face that schedule next year with an unproven qb, his career at SC is iffy, he needs a proven qb
LR saying USC can get any top notch DC they want. Is Lynn in that class? No one, and I mean no one said he was before this hire.

Michigan, UW, Fla St, Texas
sorry Bama you had a shot and lost. Also needed a miracle and offensive PI to win last week.
Agree. At 1 loss each, TX has Bama boxed out, and Bama has GA boxed out.
Man ….. The Committee may lose some sleep tonight .
I think FSU isn’t as good as Texas or Bama without Travis, but they still deserve to get it over both. They win every game on their schedule. Put em in.
Push come to shove I gotta agree Chris.

FSU looks broken on offense. But they are undefeated. Can they beat anyone with a second or third string QB? Don’t know. But if they get a month to prepare it will help.
If Iowa’s offense all wore hi tops and had single bar face masks they would fit 1950’s football for sure.
Iowa can’t score on air.
I hate to say it, but against this year’s USC defense, they’d score at least 24. And along the way, we’d make their QB look like a Heisman candidate while they discovered running back and wide receiver talent they didn’t know they had.
And here comes D’Anton Lynn to the rescue! So much remains to be revealed over the next weeks and months.
Lynn — “You talkin’ to me?”
My top 5, Michigan, Washington, Texas, Alabama, Florida State. I would expect Texas Alabama in the final with Alabama winning a NC.
I sure hope it is Texas and Alabama because FL St simply is not very good.
Bama’s best case scenario would be to face Texas in the Final (Revenge ).
I have to say, the eye test has Alabama a better team than FL St. Poor Iowa, if only they could play offfense.
Mich leading 17-0……….That’s probably the game.
IA/MI announcers just now saying USC should back Brinks truck up to door of Iowa DC. Must’ve missed the news that USC is no longer in the market for a DC.
Michigan just got Very Lucky .
?
Earlier in the game a Iowa Defensive player dropped an easy interception.
The Athletic now joins in with others and projects 8-4 CLEM vs 7-5 USC in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27.
MICH, UW, TEXAS and ALA look like the Football Final Four.
Don’t look now but Iowa might put points on the board.
Guess not
The ACC game is like watching two old guys at the nursing home fight over the last green jello serving.
Watching Iowa offense reminds me of football back in the early 60’s.
They are brutal. I don’t think they could go .500 in pac12 this year.
You realize we have reached the end of Pac12 football? End of an era.
Yeah. Sad time. I have no feelings toward any Big10 team yet, other than the three coming with us.
Ya, they are like mostly strangers to us. We do have some history with some of them, like MI, tOHS, Iowa, Penn St. It is going to be interesting having to adjust to new teams. I don’t mind the half price Huskies, but the discount ducks really annoy me.
fun Fact. The Iowa QB was recruited as a left tackle, dropped 15lbs, and is now playing QB.

I don’t know about that. Texas has better QB play and is just as physical. I think Wash and Michigan can both beat them as well.
There is a slim chance they could meet up again.
Who knows. FSU QB looks rough.
Lets have some REAL fun ………. C’MON IOWA !
Better shot of Kiffin passing up a free hooker than Iowa winning
One guy who said he always wanted to be on “The Committee ” said that if Bama wins this game he is GLAD he is NOT on “The Committee ” .
Every Georgia Fan they are showing on TV right now All look like they are about to Cry.
At this EXACT moment the only team in for sure is ……….Washington .
Guys doing SEC Championship game spent about 8 minutes during the half discussing a National Championship playoff with 4 teams but NONE of the four being an SEC Team. (Bama winning 20-10 right now about to start 4th Quarter).
Washington is a lock. If Michigan wins they are a lock. If Bama wins, Texas is in. If FSU wins they should be in as well.
That’s pretty much the way they laid it out.
Somebody, either TEXAS, ALA (if they beat GA), or FSU (if they beat LOUIS) is gonna complain for all-time that… Read more »
Alabama has no complaint, beat Texas when you had the chance, at home. Sorry Nick, they get the nod.
Agree.
Football can go on without a SEC team gifted another title
I agree that ALA has no complaint because they lost to TEXAS. But I also think ALA would beat FSU on the field, so it’s a good example of why we need a 12-team playoff. Saban thinks he took “care of business” today, but it was Sark who took care of Saban in Tuscaloosa way back on Sept. 9, 34-24. What an amazing field we have this year. GA and ALA each lose only one game, and neither “deserves” to get into the POs. I’m glad to see Sark and TEXAS looking like they made it. Sark has come an… Read more »
Suck can go to hell for all I care but yes, Texas gets the nod
Of course USC still needs to get into the $$ in recruiting, or else… Read more »
Ravens guy … good D karma
I want to see how Coach Lynn affects LR’s recruiting. I then want to see the defense learn to tackle. Finally I want to see depth being built on the defensive side.
Jam, what could Lynn do to affect Riley’s recruiting. I mean you have to recruit both sides of the ball don’t you?
I’m also gonna say that LR doesn’t want to hire someone that’s… Read more »
’74 — Sorry you don’t like Lynn, my conspicuously uninformed absolute #1 pick to be USC’s new DC, regardless of salary.
You’re not gonna be happy when you read that USC didn’t even offer one other DC the job. ✌
Kind of like a Pete Carroll hire. Not the big splash.
