D’Anton Lynn Stands Out Above a Frustrating USC Season

D’Anton Lynn, who has ‘shifted the culture’ at USC, prepares for UCLA return

As USC and UCLA prepare to meet for rivalry week, Lynn’s hire away from the Bruins by Lincoln Riley last winter has proved a massive shift to both programs’ trajectories

Luca Evans (OC Register) —  LOS ANGELES — In the winter, as Lincoln Riley extended feelers across town in a stealth attempt to pry away the defensive wunderkind who had just bested him, he delivered D’Anton Lynn several assurances.

His mentality – as he detailed to reporters in December – was that they would do everything possible to accelerate the process of making USC a great defense. That included development. That included staffing. That included practicing. Everything at USC would be done, Riley told him and told the world, with a defensive focus first.

And everything would be done under Lynn’s vision, Riley made clear a few months later, after the UCLA-turned-USC hire became official.

“He’s the defensive coordinator,” Riley said of Lynn in February, asked about defensive line coach Eric Henderson’s co-coordinator status. “And he’s going to set the direction.”

A year later, USC’s head coach has largely delivered on his promise. And as the anniversary of UCLA’s 2023 blowout of USC rolls around, a game in which Riley got to see firsthand the defensive shift orchestrated in Westwood, Lynn has largely delivered right back – inarguably the steadiest and most encouraging piece of a 5-5 Trojans team that has endured near-constant frustration for the better part of two months.

“He’s done everything that we would’ve asked,” Riley said Tuesday, asked about how Lynn had fulfilled his hopes. “The culture defensively, within our program, has really shifted in a lot of ways.”

The man himself, of course, is one of few public words. The visor changes, the hoodie changes, with the weeks that pass on USC’s practice field. The polite stare, the complete lack of self-indulgence at any question presented by a reporter, never does. And Lynn, unassuming as ever, described his return to UCLA when asked Tuesday as simply “exciting” and “another big game for our guys.”

The impact, however, is much louder, as Riley pointed out.

It’s present on the surface of his former program: UCLA (4-6 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) has gone from 92nd in the country in opponent points per game in 2022 without Lynn to 14th with him in 2023 to 83rd without him again in 2024.

It’s present on the surface of his current program: USC (5-5, 3-5 Big Ten) has gone from 121st in the country in opponent ppg in 2023 to 43rd in the country in 2024, and ranks 25th in the country in percentage of opposing red zone conversions for touchdowns.

It’s present, deeper, in the moments time and again on this team’s slate where previous units would have folded. Just look this past Saturday, when USC’s offense handed the game to Nebraska on a platter in the third quarter with a fumble from quarterback Jayden Maiava – only for an immediate stop to force a red zone field goal that Riley spoke of with pride.

“Obviously, you can look at the statistics and you know, see a pretty massive difference there,” Riley said. “But I don’t think that tells the whole story. I think D’Anton’s been a really consistent leader, along with our defensive staff.”

Lynn, the man who walks in precise grids around the perimeter of opposing fields to lock in before a game, shrugged off any emotional component of reuniting with his former program on Saturday. He had grown up in the NFL, where coaching staffs were yearly carousels through cities around the country.

“It’s ball, at the end of the day,” Lynn said.

But his return to the Rose Bowl for rivalry week, ultimately, marks the anniversary of an inflection point in Los Angeles college football, his hire away from Westwood perhaps the greatest tangible success of Riley’s tenure in Southern California.

“Certainly, the progress is real by stats,” Riley said Tuesday. “But you can just feel the difference right now.”

Hmm…although the rationale makes sense, I’m not buying it. LSU would really pull the plug even in the worst case scenario of losing their last 2 and that decommitment? Are they really that cash flush? And who would they go get? Seems to me they are in the exact same position as USC, although if USC thought they could exercise the “with cause” clause, then that changes the equation quite a bit. That position being that both schools need patience for at least another year or two, whether the fans like it or not. But one takeaway from both of… Read more »

We all have different takes on our team. Our team ! Most align, but I’m always grateful for an opposing viewpoint because there’s an opportunity to hear something not thought of. Chris, if you’re there, come on back. I think we will see if our team is pumped for this game. It’s gonna be intense. Support our kids. Fight on.

Looks like Oregon is getting all of its starters back for either their last game or BIG championship game. Burch, Johnson, James and a couple O linemen etc all are reporting back to duty.

I believe the playoff committee rules give preference to teams that play in a conference championship game. That is why ND is at a big disadvantage staying independent. If you only play 12 games you are out. Bye, Bye Irish!

The joke is on Ucla the blue frame is reminiscent of the Santa Fe freight paint scheme, so the bell should be in Kansas or New Mexico (?). With the frame painted red it’s cardinal and gold all the way.

All this talk of the Flu reminds me of Rodney Peete who beat Ucla while he had measles. Just keep the players hydrated and go with it. Anyway reading UCLA’s article in today’s paper tells me why Ucla has a shot to beat the Trojans. Foster gets the rivalry better tha Riley. He told the reporter he doesn’t have any friends at USC. He doesn’t allow people to wear red or bleed red.
Riley says it’s just a game. 😳

We will see the full impact of Coach Lynn’s guidance when the right talent is recruited & developed here. But it will take a few more years to come about due to where this program was when D’Anton came in. Honestly though we have seen this defensive coaching staff piece together a makeshift unit that is no longer a burden to the team. The other major burden is obviously the lack of successful recruitment & execution of the O-line. We will hopefully see how that is addressed this off-season? Lincoln Riley will have to look at himself in the mirror… Read more »

The O Line can actually run block this season. For one game at least Mason Murphy didn’t have a false start or get beat badly. Maybe they are improving.

You think maybe Riley was calling plays to limit that from happening along with a more mobile QB?

Jamaica, I am with you on that one. I doubt LR even recruits an immobile nonathletic QB in the future. Brian Kelly had exactly the same issue that LR had. Both had legacy QBs who were on the team when they arrived, both were immobile and nonathletic, and both were great kids who stuck around and waited their turn. Both played behind Heisman QBs (both of whom are 1st year starters in the NFL). Both had sensational Bowl games. Riley was 4-5 with his and Brian Kelly is now 6-4 with his.

If you notice the incoming Husan Longstreet is a dual, and also the guy Riley really wants Ryder Lyons in the 2026 class. Seems to be a trend, but not just at USC, it is almost everwhere.

What’s scary is UCLA has lost I think 3 OTs and their 4th string seems better than Murphy. And, they have our old OL coach. Obviously, OL recruiting is a huge issue with this team. I sure hope Toia plays only inside, not outside. I think one of the reasons the Miller Moss experiment failed was because our OT play left a lot to be desired.

You may be right about SLR. Give him a dual threat QB and suddenly he can run a balanced offense game plan and manage the game and clock much better. But give him an immobile pocket passer and his brain short circuits. Or maybe that was just Nebraska, time will tell.

As far as Moss, he may not be an NFL QB but I bet he makes a great coach someday. I’m sure his experience at SC with SLR was huge.

I’am sure everybody on this site hopes the best for the kid…….hopefully he has a long fruitful career in the profession of his choice…….he is a good Trojan doing his best…….his head coach should have never placed him in this position……its on him……Riley knew because we all knew last year he needed help……but…..instead we hear…..he is gaining weight and putting on muscle.

Perhaps Bendenbaugh would have recruited a little better than Henson, but he may have still had the tackles that are playing now. Wish he would have come to USC, but I don’t think Henson is a bad coach, he appears to be getting everything out of what he has. Wish he had more to work with.

I think Riley looks at himself in the mirror often and sees a genius play caller. A QB whisperer if you will. I’m quite certain he’s not self reflective in the mirror to see a minimalist in areas of O & D line play / recruiting; linebacker play / recruiting and overall recruiting in the state that has arguably the biggest high school powerhouses in the nation. His coaching “friendships” also seem to hinder program advancement, so that mirror isn’t helpful.

Trojanfanatic, I am sorry, but this makes no sense. The guy has coached 3 Heisman winners and 4 NFL starters. He is probably the greatest QB/OC of this generation. He gave an immobile nonathletic QB who is a great kid and who worked his tail off for 2 years sitting behind a Heisman winning QB a shot at the big time. It turned out to be a mistake.

Rjj, I’m sorry, but you don’t make sense. “The greatest OC of this generation” knew he had a pocket passer with poor OTs. Yet he calls majority pass plays with the kid and gives him no help. Wouldn’t you try to be a run first offense or at least 50-50? Riley seems to do much better with dual threat QBs, even his thinking is better.

Ohio St announces that the starting center is out for the year. Their best lineman. This is the second OL out for the year for them. They lost their LT earlier.
Indiana might have a chance. It also helps Oregon if they meet in the championship in Indy.
Never like to see injuries.

I have to admit…..with the Playoffs, BIG championship, SEC championship, interesting conference games…….we are in college football heaven……
Illinois basketball in the BIG ought to be really entertaining this year. I’ll be a neutral party sitting in the State Farm when USC visits Champaign on January 11….hope they bring their winter boots….LOL. So much to see and do……LOL. Maybe they’ll let the hogs out to chase the team bus.

I’m hoping against hope that Army can stay undefeated and beat the Irish Saturday. Looks like whoever gets the 5 seed in the playoffs is in a sweet spot. They get the 5th best conference winner at home, followed by the 4th best then on to the semifinal game. As of this week that would be BYU followed by Boise St.

Woody should play sick every week, what a game he had. I hope we see a settled down Maiava this week. It seems, according to Golden Trojan, that USC could see real success passing the ball. I still want Woody to break 100 yards.

As part of the medical staff at Marist School in Atlanta, I can tell you that we give as many kids as possible the flu shot in early September. Although, some of these helicopter moms are skeptical about allowing their angels to receive a shot, no doubt due to their extensive medical training /sarc/. And because of the lies and BS govt. agencies fed to us during the Wuhan Flu era (thanks Faucci!), it is even harder to get kids to take the flu shot. Silly to not do the flu shot. it greatly reduces your chances of getting sick… Read more »
