USC’s O-line a showcase for position battles shaped by transfer portal
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — When Gino Quinones first arrived on campus at USC, he was honest with himself. He knew it would be a while before he got his shot. Not only did he have to adjust to college, but he’d just moved from defensive end to the offensive line. There was a lot to learn.
“Did I know it would take some time? Of course,” the redshirt senior recalls.
It took almost four years for it to finally click — and another one for a full-time opportunity to present itself at left guard.
For Emmanuel Pregnon, opportunity was even harder to come by, at first. The Denver native didn’t commit himself to football until midway through high school, so he didn’t attract much recruiting attention. Only one school offered him a full scholarship: Wyoming. Everyone else, he says, saw him — a future 315-pounder — as undersized.
So Pregnon shipped off for Laramie, where it took him three years to crack the Cowboys’ rotation up front. Once he did, though, the opportunities came pouring in, among them an open guard spot at USC.
The two linemen in contention at left guard had both taken radically different routes to reach a similar juncture at USC. Quinones (66) has been at the school since 2019, a reliable reserve with two starts under his belt from last season. Pregnon (70) just arrived this past summer out of the transfer portal, a mostly unknown, yet coveted quantity.
Their competition is emblematic of a new standard in the age of the transfer portal, where capable reinforcements are often just a phone call away. At USC, more than half of its projected offensive line this season was culled from the portal in the past eight months.
That includes Pregnon, who’s emerged as the likely starter at left guard. Quinones, who began camp rotating with starters, has recently been working as USC’s second-team center, presumably clearing the way for Pregnon to secure the last open spot on the line.
Being that he was hand-picked from the portal, with offers from LSU, Penn State, Oregon, and UCLA among several others, Pregnon opened camp as the presumptive favorite at the position. He’s done nothing to jeopardize that status so far.
“Emmanuel, it doesn’t take much to look at him to figure maybe he can be a guy that can move people off the ball,” offensive line coach Josh Henson said. “He demonstrated that on film a lot. He has to get more consistent, certainly has a lot of room to grow as a player. But you saw some glimpses of top-end potential that maybe he can be really elite someday.”
Those early glimpses have come primarily in the ground game, as Pregnon gives USC a gargantuan presence on the interior that it didn’t have a year ago.
“I like to put people in the dirt,” Pregnon said.
The questions with Pregnon have always come elsewhere.
“People have always told me it wasn’t the physical side I was missing,” Pregnon said. “It was the mental side. So that was the biggest thing for me, building that mental side.”
For Quinones, the challenge hasn’t been so different. He’s spent the past four years learning the finer points of the position and honing his technique. But while Pregnon still has three seasons of eligibility after transferring in, Quinones is a fifth-year senior. His patience may not ultimately be rewarded.
It’s a harsh reality of the transfer portal, but Quinones doesn’t spend much time worrying about it. He knows he’s come a long way in his four years.
“Approach determines response. My dad told me that since I was little,” Quinones said. “Competing really does bring out the best in you. I’ve learned that pretty quickly.”

Are NFL running backs getting a bad deal? Or are they just not worth the money in today’s analytic’s driven, QB/WR-centric game? Marcus Allen on the state of the RB position in the NFL (Las Vegas Review-Journal) “I’m just going to say it — It’s almost like collusion. They decided that the running back position is one that their productivity is only for a short period of time, instead of looking at each and every one individually. They’ve decided, as a group, that they’re not going to pay them. So, I can understand what (running backs are) thinking and what… Read more »
I do not want to take a side in this . And in this case it ain’t easy for me to sit on the fence in this matter. ( Marcus is my #1 fav SC player of my life and I am an Indianapolis Colts fan ) . But I suspect there (REGRETFULLY) might be a bit a “bad blood” brewing here between …..say NFL Front offices and running backs . As a Colts fan I am Stuck with a situation I just wish (to be honest) DID NOT EXIST !!!!!
Ezekial Elliott (OHIO ST) didn’t do the current NFL RB position any favors. He signed that huge contract (basically fleecing Jerry Jones as players often do). Last season, the less quick/step slower Elliott only gained 876 yds at 3.8 yds per clip. He lost a step and that happened fast, making a 2nd NFL contract for RBs (who aren’t as protected by the NFL as QBs and WRs seem to be) a reluctant option. NJ.com/AP — Three-time Pro Bowl RB Ezekiel Elliott has signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots worth $4 mi, and up to $6 mil… Read more »
The average NFL career for running backs is 2.57 years, the shortest by position. Elliott has over twice that with 3 Pro Bowls. Next to kickers, QB has the longest career. I would ask Marcus, where would you invest your money? NFL owners want the most for their investments.
Elliott stood out to me because his skills seemed to decline so quickly.
He looked markedly slower and less dangerous last season (at least to me), especially compared to Tony Pollard. Suddenly, Elliott looked done, both as a RB and receiver out of the backfield.
I don’t predict he’ll look like much with the Pats either, who seem more inclined to tread water since Tom Brady split than get better.
Can only take so many hits .. one look at Earl Campbell, shows just that. Sadly, if the body lasts, the mind can go. Dorsett, Rob Lytle, OJ and Charlie White are sad cases of this.
So you agree ’88? No big 2nd NFL contracts for RBs? Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Jim Brown and Barry Sanders notwithstanding…
Nothing long term … but 1st 5 years, they deserve it
49ers broadcaster says Sam Darnold has an ‘elite throwing arm,’ is ‘clearly a better player than Trey Lance,’ and ‘it’s not close’ Kyle Madson (Niners Wire) — 49ers radio broadcaster Greg Papa on Monday weighed in on the team’s backup QB situation during his radio show on KNBR in San Francisco. According to Papa, the battle between Sam Darnold and Trey Lance is not much of a battle at all — with Darnold well ahead of Lance. In fact, Papa believes Darnold is not only clear of Lance, but he could be making it a battle atop the depth chart… Read more »
Purdy isn’t going to last … injury waiting to happen
Sam will kill it at SF
That would be so fantastic (sorry Purdy, no hard feelings). Hopefully, he finds a starting spot somewhere.
The Niners would sure be nice. What the heck happened to the Rams?
Sean McVay won the penultimate achievement in his profession. The fire in his belly is gone, it happens to many men in all professions. Can the fire be rekindled ?
I’m sure it has Mr. Kroenke rapt attention.
The Rams went “all in” and won when Matt Stafford came aboard and Aaron Donald was tearing it up on Defense. Stafford has always been a favorite of mine due to his arm strength and the fact that he and his wife are very generous people when it comes to donating back to the community. What the Rams lack in my mind is a solid rushing attack. Back in the day of Lawrence (don’t call me Larry) McCutcheon, Eric Dickerson and then Todd Gurley, the Rams had a stud running back and solid Offensive Line that could both run and… Read more »
Sean McVay seemed like he was the NFL’s true Boy Wonder, the youngest HC to ever win a Super Bowl at age 36 in 2022. Now, the way the Rams look, he seems more like the NFL’s Boy Dolt, after coming off a 5-12 year, with another horrible season in store. Maybe McVay’s troubles are tied to losing five assts who have been hired as HCs in the NFL or CFB. Obviously, a quality staff is such a big deal at any level: Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers (2019–present) Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals (2019–present) Jedd Fisch, Arizona (2021–present) Brandon Staley,… Read more »
I agree 100% with you Allen. I was focusing on the players but the coaching is just as important, if not more so. We all know that a great Head Coach can inspire players to go above and beyond. That’s what I always felt about John Mckay. I don’t think they had the “star” rating system back in the late 60s and early 70s. I wonder how many stars Anthony Davis, Pat Haden, J.K. McKay, Charles White, Paul McDonald and Marcus Allen would be rated, to name a few players from the days I was a student at USC. McKay… Read more »
Just saw a betting line that SC as underdogs in four games: ND (-2), Utah (-2), UW (-2) and Oregon (-8.5). Not much confidence in Alex Grinch I would say!
A lot will change in 2 months. 3 games are basically even, one down a touchdown.
That was fake
Just read that the Oregon State board is reporting that if Oregon State goes to the Mountain West, it will lose half its players. The collapse of the PAC looks to have destroyed that program. I doubt the Beavers have anywhere to go but the Mountain West. GK put the remaining 4 teams in such a time bind that Stanford and Cal tried to join the ACC (which makes zero sense, except both stay in a Power 5 conference). It appears to me either the Pac 4 merges with the MW or Stanford/Cal go independent and Oregon State/Washington State join… Read more »
ESPN sucks … they did the Pac no favors. F them, the conference was doomed the day SC left anyway.
Oddsmaker Danny Sheridan of DrafKings Bottom 12:
Is there any reason USC isn’t 6-0 when they go to South Bend October 14th?
USC hasn’t beaten ND in South Bend since 2011, 31-17. Gotta win in South Bend this year to have anything close to the season we are looking forward to.
This looks like the year, SC is on the rise and ND is only so-so.
ND is all jacked up about their 24-yr old WAKE transfer QB Sam Hartman. I don’t know anything about him.
We are going to find out in about three months! This year’s game will probably have one of the largest TV audiences of the year and still remains one of the largest stages in collegiate football. It is stage where legends are made.
Hartman had a great career at Wake Forest. Hate to say it, but Sam appears to be a big upgrade for the Irish. I expect the game in South Bend to be a real barnburner, with lots of points scored, the outcome right down to the wire. And I am not buying Arizona as a bottom feeder. They appear headed in the right direction.
Do you know what Hartman’s strong points are supposed to be?
I remain convinced this is USC’s year, and that future #1 draft pick Caleb will put the Irish to sleep again, just like last year.
I certainly hope you are right. We can all agree on this- Caleb Williams is the best player in America, and a generational talent.
Being 25 years old lol … how many 25 year old qbs has SC faced the past 2 years!
Agree … Zona is improved and get us prior to big clash at ND. SC will win but it will be much like the Zona game in 2005, just prior to at ND. SC went through the motions but pulled away. LR calls a much better game than shithead Kiffy ever could, so SC will pull away much earlier than 2005.
Always tough winning there and expect no help from Pac refs. It will be a battle, Hope CW puts on a OJ 1967, Charlie White 1979,Chris Claiborne 1997(amazing at mlb) Reggie 2005, legendary type at South Bend performance. Win this one and look out!
I am looking forward to the ND game. I really like our chances. The first six games, to be honest, are warm up games. SC should be able to win them easily (I do no see any game in the first six going into the 4th Q – whereas EVERY game last year, save CO, went late into the 4th Q, In fact, I think every game was on the line until the last drive, except Stanford and the 2nd Utah game which was over when Caleb hurt himself). The team should be primed, in great health, and highly motivated.
Pac-4 schools push aside George Kliavkoff, hire a separate consultant Matt Zemek (Yahoo) — George Kliavkoff never fully earned the trust of Pac-12 presidents. That’s not a good thing, but it’s also not a final and damning verdict against Kliavkoff himself. The Pac-12 presidents, not Kliavkoff, rejected an ESPN offer which would have paid Pac-12 member schools $30 million per year and likely saved the conference. Kliavkoff did make mistakes, but he didn’t turn down ESPN’s deal. Nevertheless, the Pac-4 schools left behind after the mass exodus of recent weeks is not consulting George Kliavkoff for advice. It seems pointless… Read more »
After F ing thief Larry Scott … how can you succeed. This guy was doomed from the get go.
About the only way I can see the PAC staying intact, is a merger of some sort. The media market in the bay area isn’t as strong as L.A. And the Pacific Northwest is probably less. The real problem is the media market for most teams in the area, is not a viable lure. The only advantage teams might garner by joining the PAC is being in a “Power Five” conference.Just who would jump is a question I can’t answer.
This is the answer for the Pac4.
Just survive their sports programs.
Hope they are smart enough to realize this.
Sounds like GK, for all practical purposes, has been replaced.
I’m afraid he fumbled the ball, right off the bat actually. I bet GK has had a totally miserable experience as the Pac commish. I wonder if the salary money was worth it GK?
Here are some of the key takeaways from USC’s second full week of practice per The Athletic’s Antonio Morales: 1. There’s a natural inclination to preach patience with true freshmen. No need to overpromise and underdeliver. But man, it’s getting more and more difficult to temper expectations for true freshman linebacker Tackett Curtis. “Tackett Curtis is …,” rush end Jamil Muhammad said before letting out a whistle. “Man. … I’ve been around a lot of freshmen the past couple years and they don’t come quite like him. He already plays fast, but he’s picking up the scheme now and he’s playing even faster… Read more »
The D has depth, size, talent and revenge on their mind … okay Grinch, let’s get it done.
The D this year has a LOT of competition. I find the DL to be very interesting. The above article did not list Corey Foreman, Sam Greene or Selby, all of whom have been moved to DL from OLB/Rush End. . The staff has moved two kids that played the OLB/rush end position last year (Foreman and Byrd) as well as two true frosh slotted for OLB/rush (Greene and Selby) to DL. Based on what we saw last year, I will surprised of Benton, Taleni or Ta’ufo’ou get a lot of PT in the last six games (which is, for… Read more »
Johnny Manziel says Reggie Bush deserves Heisman Trophy back: ‘Complete bull-s**t’ Johnny Manziel wants Reggie Bush to get his Heisman Trophy back. Manziel, who won the 2012 Heisman, spoke on social media about the former USC running back’s vacated trophy. “There is nothing I want to see more than for Reggie to get his Heisman back,” Manziel wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I think what the NCAA did in that situation is complete bulls–t. He is one of the best college football players in history and deserves to be on that stage with us every year. “The only difference between… Read more »
Johnny football did have an amazing Freshman year at A&M. After going pro, he quickly went down hill and never lived up to the hype. I take anything he says with “a grain of salt”. The guy I would miss on the stage is Charles White. So sad that he passed away a few months ago. May he R.I.P. In 1978-79, the backfield of Charles, Marcus Allen and QB Paul McDonald was one of the best in USC football history. Kind of a forerunner to Matt Leinart, Bush and LenDale White.
I just read that the PAC 12 had a media deal for somewhere in the $30 million range per school, but held out for a $50 million deal. (for a product without its highest rated schools).
It wasn’t the commissioner that killed the PAC it was arrogance. I guess it pays to know the market. The university presidents killed the deal.
I was just going to put up a story about that. The negligence ands hubris that was involved allowing the now Pac-4 to disintegrate is/was astounding. Here’s that blurb, showing a very reasonable ESPN’s kick to the Pac’s butt:
George Kliavkoff’s biggest mistake as Pac-12 commissioner is beyond dispute
yahoo sports
WOW! I totally agree with the writer of the Yahoo article. First, a majority of the remaining PAC 10 Presidents are a bunch of fools. Second, GK was marginal at best as he should have realized that the number was fair and the best he could reasonably do, and made it clear that this was their best shot and if they did not believe him, he was resigning. CO wisely realized both (a majority of the PAC10 Presidents were idiots and GK was marginal) and then left. I doubt the ASU President has figured it even after the disaster he… Read more »
Every president that rejected that offer should be fired on the spot, today. There is so much idiocy in academics it is unbelievable.
Steveg, And this lunacy is supported by our tax dollars. Even though I live in Texas, our federal government is heavily supporting the Marxist and neo-Marxism destruction of our country via our academic institutions. This started big time under Obama. We fund it through student loans (which the Demos are now trying to forgive) and grants. Prior to Obama, all student loans were made by private lenders and folks had to qualify. After Obama, they are made by the feds directly with little or no qualification. The academics hence have no financial accountability in running their schools. As 18-22 year… Read more »

NC St voted against. They are not one of the big 3 crying about money in the ACC. Perhaps they can be lobbied and convinced to change their mind.
Steveg, What amazed me is 11 members voted in favor of this insanity. It you are going to expand, it needs to make financial and common sense. Stanford and Cal are half a continent away. They have at best mediocre men’s football and basketball (the money sports), but excel in the non-financial sports – particularly women’s sports. The only reason to merge would be to make money but this merger would seem to guarantee less money to the other members of the conference. How does it help the kids in the non-revenue sports? Adding travel expense to each member school.… Read more »
Maybe Stanford can get Sam Bankman-Fried’s Stanford law school parents to turn some screws to get a vote flipped! That’s a deep in the weeds conspiracy.
Hope the ACC doesn’t take the road of the Pac12.
Expansion is what is needed to survive in new times.
The ACC would be smart to take the rest of the Pac12 teams.
To be a great conference it now requires a national footprint.
If the stay in their corner like the Pac12 they will
follow the same path.
This photo of the empty-headed Clay Helton never gets old. Sorry if I am offending anyone.
I do not hate the guy, so it doesn’t offend me. I do think Hayden and Swann were both worse than Clay. They hired and extended a coach who was clearly in over his head.
Fortunately for long-gone Trojan heroes Haden and Swann, I can’t find any photos of either blankly looking into the abyss like the wildly overmatched Cat. Tracing The Cat’s USC years to their origin, Max Nikias also deserves a tremendous amount of blame. Many would say it was actually Nikias who wanted to hire Helton (basically simply because he thought he would be good for Nikias’ fundraising efforts, and also keep USC out of trouble is what I was told), and Haden just went along with it, then quickly announced his resignation in late Jan 2016. Helton had been named the… Read more »
Haden was bribed by Jimmy Sexton to hire Suckisian and hire and extend Gomer. Haden is as dirty as Trump. From Varsity Blues to hiring coaches.
You mean dirty as Old Sniffy, China Joe Biden…. Haden was famously known as the only dummycrat in San Marino. So what was your degree, 1988? Social Work? Or something equally into thievery?
There is a picture of Sark embracing Hayden that works
Save the hate for Kiffy and Suck … those Ahole losers actually believed they could coach and did more to set SC back than any others. From back stabbing Chow and then embarrassing the program as stupid OCs and them lousy HCs. No talent dope Gomer just won the lottery by being around.
Awful decade in USC football … thank good for LR!
Poor Man….Lost In Space, not a clue to a modern Offense.
I may have actually physically “jumped” for joy when I heard Mike Bohn had finally sent the Cat into the trash heap after STAN had annihilated his team 42-28 in the Coliseum.
Sept 13, 2021. A grand day it was.
You’re not alone, Allen. I think I high-fived myself several times.
That just ruined my day.
Nothing offensive, just the consummate portrayal of a clueless buffoon, who managed to hang around as long as he did, due to absolute malfeasance on the part of SC’s management. Both Haden and Nikias should be publicly flogged for their actions. As for Gomer, I wish him nothing but failure in his short tenure at Georgia Southern.
We are so fortunate to have Riley at the helm. The difference is mind numbing.
Allen, it does remind us just how far SC has come in really one year. Clay had single-handedly nearly destroyed SC football. The Clay Helton era is in the rear view mirror, just as ND left the Gerry Faust era in the rear view mirror. SC is now as good as it has ever been. Elite HC (clearly top 5), elite coaching staff, elite support staff and resources, best overall talent in at least a decade, and now joining one of two elite conferences. Just look at how much our OL has changed in basically one year. Under Clay, it… Read more »
Trojan Killer Lou Holtz replaced hapless Gerry Faust (30-26-1 at ND), way back in 1986.

and how … LR is amazing. Known for his play calling and qb development. He is an amazing program builder, with his eye always n the future.
OMG. I just threw up in my mouth.
In watching “Johnny Football” on Netflicks, one of the main characters is Manziel’s collegiate OC – Kliff Kingsbury. Manziel was a huge talent – but he was totally out of control. He never practiced much, he never watched tape, he never prepared; Kevin Sumlin and KK just let him “do his own thing.” Manziel basically established the present day A&M program – he provided the publicity for rebuilding the Stadium – his two years and two victories over AL made A&M over a billion dollars. A&M engaged in conduct with Johnny Football that made the Reggie Bush affair look like… Read more »
Following Haden’s Tarmac job on Lane Kiffin, USC was actually after Kevin Sumlin hard and tried to steal him from A&M in 2013. Talk about a bullet dodged! 👃 👃

Many here have said it many times but I will say it anyway. How refreshing to read stories of competition everywhere especially in the trenches. Just 2 years ago the stories were, how to fill the starting 5 on both sides of the ball. Not only competition to play but no scandals or outrageous behavior. The Kiffin to Helton years are feeling like a bad dream. Usually by now USC would have had one player at least gotten into trouble somewhere and was either suspended or out of the program. Riley looks at character as well as ability. Great to see.
The difference between an elite leader who has been given full control and resources to do his job and a mediocre leader or a leader who may have talent but is figuring out the job is gigantic. Did you look at the list Allen gave for recruiting? LR brought in this year 36 new players (that is about 40% of the roster). Last year I think LR brought in about 35 new players. That means in two years, only about 15 or so Helton recruited players are still on the roster. That is about an 80% roster turn over by… Read more »
