Kyron Hudson puts on a one-handed show as USC football outlasts LSU in Vegas
Hudson makes two spectacular plays, USC’s defense appears much improved and Miller Moss directs the game winning drive
Luca Evans (OC Register) — LAS VEGAS — The first one-hander was a beauty, an instant-classic that will live on highlight reels in USC lore for years to come.
The second, quite literally, won USC a football game, the most massive catch of Kyron Hudson’s life.
For three years, the elder in USC’s receiver room had languished in depth charts and snap counts, a sure-handed Mater Dei product waiting for an opportunity that never quite materialized. He started, after a standout fall camp in 2023, lining up alongside Caleb Williams. But he caught just 15 passes, and it seemed as if his career in a Trojans uniform could simply drift away past 2024, a host of sophomore receivers vying for quarterback heir Miller Moss’ attention.
Hudson seized that attention, and then some, in a star-making performance as USC gutted out a 27-20 win over LSU on Sunday afternoon in Vegas.
After a revamped USC defense held LSU at bay — and vice versa — in the first quarter, a combined zero only festering the energy inside a packed-out Allegiant Stadium, Moss locked into a rhythm in the second quarter on a variety of screen looks and pretty route concepts. And on USC’s first drive, as Moss uncorked a toss up the seam to a draped Kyron Hudson, the USC redshirt-junior reached up for a miracle.
Somehow, twisting in midair across his body, Hudson reached over his head and full-extension plucked Moss’ toss out of thin air, bobbling it slightly in both hands before cradling it as he crashed to the turf.
It seemed impossible, so much so that the play went under-review, no physical explanation for how Hudson was able to not only palm-cradle Moss’ toss but also tuck it down to earth. Allegiant roared, then paused, then erupted once more after the catch was upheld, sophomore defensive end Braylan Shelby positively freaking out with the rest of USC’s sideline.
“I said ESPN Top 10, off the muscle,” Shelby said postgame, beaming from ear to ear. “Like, he was — I mean, that catch was in-sane, man.”
For nearly the entire second half, to come, USC’s offense was stonewalled and pinned deep next to its own turf in Vegas, a raucous Louisiana crowd delighting in glee as Lincoln Riley’s offense sputtered for a stretch hardly seen in his USC history.
But new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn’s unit dialed up a bevy of massive third-down stops on Sunday, none more massive than linebacker Eric Gentry stuffing a third-down run in the fourth quarter from LSU back John Emery Jr. And Moss, a gamer who has never shied from a massive spotlight, went to work.
First came a 20-yard strike to Hudson. Then came a 16-yard dart up the middle from Mississippi State transfer back Woody Marks, held in check for most of the night outside of a second-quarter short touchdown run. Then, on a first-and-10 from the 28-yard-line, a yellow flag flew as Moss dropped back. Free play.
Unencumbered, a gunslinger all to himself, Moss saw sophomore buddy Ja’Kobi Lane streaking in a one-on-one down the right side of the field and uncorked a moonbeam. It fell, softly, into the 6-foot-4 Lane’s hands, the receiver turning in the end zone with USC suddenly holding a 20-17 lead and flashing three fingers on either hand to the stands.
LSU countered with a field goal, giving Moss the ball back with 1:47 left in a 20-20 ballgame. And Moss went back at the Tigers, a technician who took what was handed to him all night long, finishing 26-of-37 for 378 yards. A few-yard toss to Ja’Kobi Lane here, and a 10-yard out to Hudson there, and USC found itself in a second-and-15 with 18 seconds to go from the 47, still needing a big play to break through.
Hudson, again, took center stage.
Racing down the left sideline, he reached out his left hand — this time — and snagged a one-hand laser from Moss, his sideline erupting, absorbing a helmet-to-helmet targeting blow from LSU’s Jardin Gilbert. Marks capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, his second of the day.
And Moss went streaking down the sideline, sprinting with no end in sight, just pure glee as confetti fell minutes later in Vegas on a program with a true signature win in a new era.
For all the fodder for national talk shows in the offseason, USC’s win Sunday validated Riley’s offseason emphasis on the program’s “rebuild,” in year three since his arrival from Norman, Oklahoma. It validated the defensive-staff overhaul. It validated the program-wide weight gain.
And it elevated USC, a year after the same hopes were quickly dashed, back into the early-season College Football Playoff conversation.
“Regardless of what happened today,” Riley said postgame, “it’s still not going to change what we’re building, the thing we’re doing. We’re just so committed to it. And nothing’s going to change it.”

Watched the game again this afternoon just for fun, and yes, it was fun. Some thoughts: This was much more fun than USC’s last “Neutral site kickoff classic”. Lynn is absolutely fantastic. He has succeeded in doing what the previous 5 defensive coordinators could not. Moss is ice, we’re in good hands with him at the helm. No stage seems too big for him. Special teams had no faux pas other than the missed short field goal. Our offensive line is certainly the weak spot right now, but I think they will improve. Riley has offset this by designing plays… Read more »
At about the three min mark, I was truly thinking USC would probably be on the losing end of this terrific game. LSU seemed to have us in their clutches.
But then, almost like in the great Trojan days of the past, USC turned on the juice and with the help of Kyron Hudson’s magnificence in the face of a brutal targeting penalty, the Trojans emerged triumphant and winners of a critical big game we really needed. Trojan Heroes all around.
Yep, it was precarious, but when was the last time we forced punts on two consecutive series late in the game when we really needed it? That was the turning point IMO.
That decision (rather than getting say Ward who went to Miami), probably cost FL State its season. Goes from an undefeated season to a 6-6 or worse season. We need to remember just how lucky SC is to have probably the best OC is collegiate football as our HC. I have not seen the other B1G QBs, but it appears that Miller Moss might be the best QB in the BIG. He is certainly one of the best.
Report from the game. The stadium is a fantastic venue. One of the best I have visited. Had great seats, so that might impact my view. The game was far better in person that on TV. It was one of the best games I have attended in person. I was not there for 55-28 and I was not there for the Bush Push, but the only other game I have attended that compares to this was the Reggie Bush/Matt Leinhart Trojans against the Aaron Rodgers Cal Bears in the Coliseum. Fantastic experience. My brother who attended the game with me,… Read more »
Agree the stadium is awesome. I had club seats, which doesn’t hurt the experience. Did you walk out of the stadium? That was only negative. Everyone walking across that bridge at the same time, even after staying until team left field.
Chris, I also had club seats. I was at Row 131. And, yes I walked out of the stadium, all the way back to my hotel (New York New York). I am really glad my brother and I decided to go. Amazing experience. I had forgotten just how much fun good SC football teams can be to watch. Since PC left, I do not think we have had a good team. Good players, yes. Good teams, not so much. This is a good team. It has a chance to be a very special team.
55-24 in 1974? … 2005 at ND was unreal, thinking back to that game still makes my head ring lol to this day how SC and Leinart executed that audible to Jarret Is amazing under those circumstances
So for the life of me, how can Notre Dame be in any conversation of high rank ( currently #7 ) or playoff contention with that pathetic schedule they have. They will go undefeated ( probably using their second string ) and be politicking for a top spot. Watching this unfold will tell us all we need to know about our future scheduling.
Championships won, strength of schedule, head to head competition, and comparative outcome of common opponents supposed to factor in the selection committee rankings. Notre Dame only has 1 maybe 2 more tough games, Florida St. and USC. They will drop out of the top 11 with a loss or 2 if the criteria is correctly applied. I think in couple years ND will have to join a conference if they want to keep a legit schedule and have a chance to make the playoffs.
Sounds great to me. USC can totally ruin ND’s season in L.A. on Nov. 30. We owe them big-time and it looks like we have the team to do it. The Irish have a very good, stout defense, which is why they could hold A&M to only 13 points at Kyle Field, an extremely noisy, intimidating place for many opponents. Their running game also proved too tough for the Aggies. I watched the entire ND/A&M game and you could see ND improve during the game as they finally took over the contest in the 4th QB. Unfortunately, it also seems… Read more »

After watching (or occasionally looking into) the “powerhouse teams” play cream puffs and high school clubs, it was fun to see two potential teams square off. According to the turd in the punch bowl reporter inside USC the game wasn’t good enough. Others are saying LSU wasn’t a quality team. My own assessment is that the defense looked good and the offensive line held their own. I think the run at the end of the game was a statement. We can take 3 and the win, but here’s a gut punch for you. If USC has a long way to… Read more »
#s 10,13, 14, and 20 lost, that’s 4 spots. #s 3, 6, 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, and 22 all played FCS teams, that’s 8 spots in my book. There are cupcakes, but feasting on a bowl of frosting? Oregon should drop big time. Beating FCS Idaho by only 10, hell, USC was a missed 29yd FG from beating #13 by 10!
USC had no business playing this game … except glad they did. It shut everyone the hell up and my big mouth Big 10 boys are pretty quiet. They know full well, they are going to struggle with those receivers and that scheme and now they know, they are not scoring on SC either.
Big moves in Week One are more common than later in the season. Most people held SC back based upon QB and defense concerns. With those questions answered well (for now), #12 or #13 seems probable to me.
Lynn had Cobb and Gentry lined up all over the place. Both played really well. Also noticed the communication, they were constantly signaling on checks until everyone gave same signal.
You check out the reaction of those who were expecting LSU to run up & down the field on a weak USC team. Give USC credit for a great win? The ESPN team are now implying LSU isn’t a playoff level team after all so this SC win doesn’t really say much. Spin it all you want ESPN.
It seems like old times… Mark Anderson (kiro7.com) — LAS VEGAS — (AP) — Lincoln Riley had a flashback to three years ago when he coached Oklahoma. The Sooners were driving against archrival Texas in a tie game when a 33-yard run into the end zone with 3 seconds left beat the Longhorns. Knowing that a field goal was all No. 23 Southern California needed Sunday night, Riley thought back to that play. A run was called for Woody Marks, who rushed 13 yards up the middle to score with 8 seconds left and beat No. 13 LSU 27-20. “I told someone… Read more »
Only thing I regret about Pete’s run, well except Pete creating those two aholes Suck and Goatboy Kiffy … is he didn’t get to drub Holtz and Kelly. It was fun beating fat Chuck Weis but by the end it was like picking on a retard.
Keep saying he is not doing a good job … LSU will agree and send him packing
When Coach O started acting like a coked out idiot, they dumped him 1 year after winning a title
Great victory and start to the 2024 season. So many positives to take away from this game, but one that I will take away is the physicality of the Defense. LSU’s talented, returning OL was matched and outplayed at critical times by USC’s revamped Defense. Although Moss and Marks deserved the limelight and post-game interviews, it was the Defense to me that put USC in a position to win. After what should be a resounding USC win next week against Utah State, it’s off to the “Big House” in Michigan the following week. I’m really looking forward to seeing that… Read more »
If we make a victorious showing in the big house, that will stop all this 4th or 5th place talk where USC winds up at the end of the season in the Big.
He really has good lower body strength, which is critical if your team want to be able to do power running plays to complement the passing attack. We really have not had that kind of running for a long time and especially it has beeen missing during the LR era.
Dye was a killer in LR’s 1st year and Caleb was running the ball too … Last wasn’t awful but Caleb deciding not to run stalled the run game.
Marks is really quick and explosive … that is something that LR hadn’t had here.

As you say vT, Fight On! ✌
Yep, it was precarious, but when was the last time we forced punts on two consecutive series late in the game when we really needed it? That was the turning point IMO.
Not sure why Fla St would go out and get DJU? He’s not elite in any way.
He sure proved it tonite

Finebaum now says that LSU is not that good of a team, and is about #6 or #7 in the SEC. What a fraud.
LSU lost their first games in ’23 and ’22 and went on to win 10 games the last 2 seasons. Total fraud.
Of course Finny says that now … that LSU team will win a lot of SEC games

Now that USC is the talk of the college football world again (Oh, Ya!), anyone have predictions about where the polls will be putting the Trojans?
SI predicts USC will land at #13, LSU at #23, basically switching places.
BC still has to play FSU tonight (4:30 PT) in Tallahassee.
I think they will go as high as 13. 10 spots in one week is big.
USC should be #11
#s 10,13, 14, and 20 lost, that’s 4 spots.
For the record and then I’m done with the topic. I don’t like cupcake games but I understand why and when coaches want to play them.
USC had no business playing this game … except glad they did. It shut everyone the hell up and my big mouth Big 10 boys are pretty quiet. They know full well, they are going to struggle with those receivers and that scheme and now they know, they are not scoring on SC either.

USC is now due some respect, especially from a lot of SEC/espn media types. The B1G has been given notice, USC has entered the building.
First real test and we passed with flying cardinal and gold colors!
You check out the reaction of those who were expecting LSU to run up & down the field on a weak USC team. Give USC credit for a great win? The ESPN team are now implying LSU isn’t a playoff level team after all so this SC win doesn’t really say much. Spin it all you want ESPN.

def not 60%, it was 50/50. But those guys are loud, no doubt about it.
They just scream more. 😉
Judging by most of our LSU friends here in the ATL, they live to drink and yell and scream. Night games play into this tendency big time!
Did Kelley even say anything good about USC in his presser,?
I think the best he could muster is that we are “not a pedestrian football team” and I think he gave a nod to our receivers in there somewhere.
Only thing I regret about Pete’s run, well except Pete creating those two aholes Suck and Goatboy Kiffy … is he didn’t get to drub Holtz and Kelly. It was fun beating fat Chuck Weis but by the end it was like picking on a retard.
