Can USC Beat the Odds in Eugene?

The Audible: Can USC take down Oregon and move into playoff position?

SoCal News Group columnists Jim Alexander and Mirjam Swanson discuss some of the week’s sports issues

Jim Alexander: I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Saturday’s USC-Oregon game in Eugene is the most important of the season for both sides, by far. Oregon is No. 7 in the latest College Football Playoff jockeying for position, USC is No. 15, and there’s a good chance the winner moves into the top 12 and the loser falls out of it. And if it’s the Trojans who lose, they’re done regardless of what happens the following week against UCLA. (Oregon gets Washington next week in Seattle.)

And I guess for these teams – and a lot of others going into the final weeks who are maybe/kinda/sorta on the bubble – the overall expectations have changed dramatically from what they used to be. And Mirjam, I’m interested in your take on this: If your team, whoever it is, doesn’t make the playoff field, is the season automatically a failure? Or does it depend on what was expected at the start?

Mirjam Swanson: Might be the most important game left this regular season, period.

There’s some jockeying happening in the SEC, but without the heightened in-or-out stakes of this showdown in Eugene – wait, give me a second.

OK. I had to look – and it looks like it’s going to be a nice day in Eugene, actually partly sunny with only a 10% chance of rain (even though it “never rains at Autzen Stadium” … as they like to say up there).

So that shouldn’t affect the game, which I’ve heard people refer to as something akin to a “wild-card” matchup, and it does feel like that. Win and you’re in – or almost in.

The Ducks are mighty tough to beat at home, 31-2 over the past five seasons. If USC can do it, Lincoln Riley’s crew definitely deserves a spot in the CFP.

I’ve liked, though, how Riley has been embracing this stretch of the season, talking up the notion of a big, important matchup as not Just Another Game, but as moments that mean a lot, that should be enjoyed for that.

Riley has seemed really to like this group despite some of its deficiencies, to believe in it, and the group has felt different, too. Even coming out for every home game in matching USC warmups instead of treating those entrances into the Coliseum as NBA-esque fashion fit checks said something about this squad and its approach.

Riley is enjoying being able to talk his talk after a couple of disappointing years, this week clapping back at the College Game Day crew: “These are all the same people that thought we were going to suck.”

Of course, in 2023 Riley bristled at outside expectations being too high: “We don’t come in every single week talking about winning a national championship, going to the playoffs. I don’t know where that narrative starts. If you let the outside set expectations, you’re always being measured up against that …”

But if the nation’s third-highest-paid coach can steer the Trojans into the 12-team playoff tournament, he’ll be able to shut up even his most vocal critics … for a minute. But if he doesn’t, then he can go back to complaining about the people complaining about the Trojans underachieving.

Definitely a big game. Now if they can just avoid another of their ill-timed ineligible man downfield penalties.

Jim: It’s nice to see that USC has its swagger back, but I’m going to take the 30,000-foot view here. These teams moved into the Big Ten at the same time. One moved quickly into the league’s top tier – remember, Oregon won the Big Ten championship game last year, beating Penn State – and the other found itself a mid-level team in an 18-team conference. This is USC’s chance to ascend to, or at least get closer to, that top tier of the Big Ten.

And consider that both teams slogged their way to victories over Iowa, through inclement weather, in back-to-back weeks. Oregon did so at Iowa. The Trojans rallied at home through a rainstorm.

I’m still not ready to treat these teams as equals, though. Oregon has been dominant, both in the Pac-12 and now in the Big Ten. If this game were in the Coliseum, it might be a more even fight, but Oregon is 15-1 in conference games since joining the league, as Substack columnist John Canzano noted. USC is 6-1 this year after going 4-5 last year, but even with its swagger, is it ready to take down the tallest tree in the forest? I don’t think so. I think Oregon will win easily.

Watching Game Day. Giving USC a lot of air time. Almost like they like USC. Almost.

It feels like it, Steve. I am surprisingly confident today about our chances.

ASTROTURF: I remember the old fields at Autzen: the field was crowned; 3 feet higher in the center [ I think for drainage]. Now the field is flat field turf. Also, they say the agility or change in direction is faster on Autzen turf. No rain tomorrow: “it never drains in Autzen”

One thing SC need to do is use ball control and a short passing game to keep the ball away from Oregon. Just take what the Oregon defense gives you.

It won’t be easy but I see SC winning the game 31-28.

I can see USC winning 28-24 with the USC defense making the game winning stop. This team has progressed that far.

I hope so … but the D really struggles vs good run/pass teams. Borderline awful. Quack RBs are really good and qb is now confident. The USC O will have its moments but isn’t nearly as potent as it was with those now injured RBs. Quacks will put a blanket on Makai, like ND and Neb did, rather than sit in Tampa 2 like the Herks, allowing Makai to run wild.

Hope I’m very wrong

We await this game that’s been circled on our calendars for a long time. Some of us grimace at what we believe is gonna happen, some of us believe we can pull off the unexpected. The line just dropped a point for some reason. Since LR has taken the reigns, yes, we are not statistically good on the road. That we know. Ad Nauseam. What else we know is we do have the ability, the DNA, to be physical. To have an attitude. I’m wondering if having some key assistant coaches who do have that fire ( Lynn, Rob Ryan,… Read more »

I’m getting a little fed up with all these prognostications that Oregon is a bad match for USC and will expose their weak run defense. How quickly these people forget an Indiana team came into Autzen stadium higher ranked and a bigger target for the ducks & their fans to rub the Hoosiers out as legit opponents but got beaten. Indiana & USC are similar in having a passing game that can overcome the Duck defensive backfield. Indiana QG Mendoza & Maiava are both accurate quick passers that can keep the ball and run. If our coaching staff studied the… Read more »

A late field goal by Sayeri, who seems to have water in his veins, makes it 31 to 30 USC.

It is college football and anything can happen on any given Saturday. I hope USC pulls out a win. It would be amazing! However, my brain is telling my heart to sit down. Oregon is #1 in Passing Yards Allowed and Passing Efficiency Defense. Maiava is going to have a big challenge. Their Run Defense is #17 in Power 4. The Ducks Passing Offense is #35 in Power 4 but the Run Offense is #4. USC defense is not that good. Oregon is better than Notre Dame, unbeatable at home. I figure The Ducks are 14 points better than USC.… Read more »

Oregon is beatable, but the reality is that for USC to win, it needs to play its best game of the year, and the Ducks need to make a few mistakes for SC to have any real chance of winning. Based on our previous road games, I don’t see it.Hope I am wrong, but I feel Oregon is poised to get a fairly easy win.

Those ineligible man downfield penalties can be eliminated by teaching techniques that are common sense. Linemen should move along the line of scrimmage on RPO plays. If a lineman gets engaged in a block beyond the line of scrimmage must remain engaged with his block until the ball has passed him.

If USC has any chance of staying close enough with the ducks through 4-quarters of football, they have to play hard & aggressive all the way. And if they actually do this and limit penalties & mistakes, manage the game to where our offense has the ball the last minute/minutes of the game, we have a chance to win. The question is, is all this asking too much of this Trojan team?

I agree with most of the logic of Kartje’s article. We are in a gap in talent execution in the transitioning from Portal dependency to mostly HS recruitment & development. For us this season and partly next season as so many freshmen are coming into the program and expectations have to be tempered for their first season to develop & experience playing college speed & complicated football. This is why Riley, in the beginning, made a serious blunder spending the first two years in particular, of heavy Portal inclusion here that prevented the program being ready to play Big Ten… Read more »

I watched the whole game. Although SC didn’t play well, I thought it was just a fabulous game. When Marsh hit that shot at the buzzer I just laughed.

I can’t recall seeing a game with as many twists and turns. Play that game in March and it’s a top-5 game ever.

SC played pretty awful, especially their rebounding. Watching that game will cost me years off my life.

Yeah, they did. Really bad decision-making at the end of regulation and in all 3 OTs.
