Can Sam Darnold Survive the Jets?

Can Sam Darnold stick in the NFL? It’s plays like this, which were his trademark at USC, that make you believe he can.

He either needs to make a lot more of them “while running for his life”, or he needs a team with far superior culture.

Running for his life…

The curse of being a very high draft pick, especially as a QB. Unless you have a Bill Walsh level head coach (where the team might get turned around in 3 seasons); you are doomed to a career of mediocrity (Archie Manning with the Saints) because there is usually a reason a team is in last place to get a high draft pick. Poor front office, poor coaching staff, no long-term vision for the team because of frequent regime changes. I hope Sam gets free from the Jets.

For many years I have maintained that USC quarterbacks don’t fare well in the NFL because they are drafted by teams that don’t believe in having a line to protect them. That being said, I hoped Sam’s training, behind the worst line ever, might make him the exception to the rule.
I always fail to factor in the fact that NFL defense is better than the PAC 12. If the Jets don’t want to protect their magician, he can’t provide magic.
