Can Mason Cobb Dig USC Out Of Another Grave?

USC’s Mason Cobb will help dig a grave for his grandfather, who taught him how to work

Thuc Nhi Gguyen (LA Times)  —  Paul Haws was a hard-working cowboy. His grandson is a warrior.

Mason Cobb got his mentality from his grandfather, and after Haws died Friday at the age of 90, USC’s senior linebacker is carrying on the family’s hard-working legacy as he anchors the Trojans defense.

“He’s a soldier, man,” Cobb said Tuesday after practice. “An OG, man. … He worked until his last breath.”

A day after Haws’ death, Cobb took the field at Notre Dame, honoring his grandfather with five tackles in the rivalry game. Cobb will return home to Utah for the funeral service on Thursday before the No. 18 Trojans (6-1, 4-0 Pac-12) host No. 14 Utah (5-1, 2-1) on Saturday. The family, including Cobb, will be tasked with digging Haws’ grave, as stipulated in his will. No machines allowed.

“And it’s not no grass,” Cobb added. “It’s like gravel and boulders.”

The last wish feels fitting for a man who Cobb said taught him perseverance. Haws lost his mother when he was 18 months old and his father when he was 16. He was deployed in Hawaii, where he met Cobb’s grandmother. Although Haws was long retired by the time Cobb was growing up, he remembered his grandfather doing side jobs around town and working on mobile homes with Cobb’s uncles.

“There’s no excuse for you not to work hard,” Cobb said of what he learned from his grandfather. “From a young age, I’ve seen him work circles around everybody, from when he was 60 to when he was 90. Just his mentality and that guy just taught me how to work.”

Cobb, whose mother Ruth calls her fifth son her “warrior,” has taken that same mentality to USC. The Oklahoma State transfer quickly cemented his starting role at inside linebacker and earned teammates’ respect, voted a team captain only months after arriving. Cobb ranks third on the Trojans with 31 tackles despite missing two games.

“From a character standpoint, checks every box. From an effort standpoint, checks every box,” defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said during the summer. “Mason’s one of those guys that expects to make the play on every single day. And you can see it.”

Cobb is anchoring USC’s defense despite fighting through a nagging rib injury. The senior started the season opener but missed games against Nevada and Stanford. He said he is managing the injury with stretching techniques, but a rib “came out of place” against Arizona on Oct. 7.

He still played every defensive snap of the triple-overtime game and made the game-clinching tackle.

“I love the pain and the game, man,” Cobb said after the thrilling win. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Cobb was flying from game-day adrenaline when he learned of his grandfather’s declining health after the win. He returned home to be with family during the week and joined the Trojans in Indiana before facing Notre Dame. Haws’ death “happened so fast,” Cobb said, and “everything started coming down on me,” especially with USC suffering its first loss of the season to the Irish.

“It was a lot to handle,” Cobb said. “But this is times when you take that next step to being a better player and a better person, pushing through those setbacks in life.”

I hope LR sticks this out because he signed a 10 year deal. We don’t need to go start all over because he is being critizied by national n local media. Give me a break. He just has to man up n take responsibility for his coaching hires n flaws as a Coach. Start by firing underperforming coaches m replace them with top notch coaches who can develop players from HS. That is how you build a program instead of going through the portal every year that’s not how build a sustainable program.

In hindsight (always 20/20) rather than hire an “offensive genius” as head coach, the better choice may have been for USC to hire an accomplished defensive coordinator.

I had assumed that if USC were a scoring machine with a Heisman winner to boot, the defense would pretty much take care of itself. I was wrong. The adage that defense wins championships is true.

I think we can all agree USC’s defense under Grinch has been bad. No real surprise. I never thought I would see the day when Riley’s offense looked so inept, and it wasn’t just the ND game. Been going on to some extent since ASU. Something is a miss. During Pete Carroll’s last year, we saw the Trojans play at a level of mediocrity we thought we would never experience under his leadership. But he knew he would be leaving for the NFL, and seemed to have mentally checked out. There are a lot of rumors out there about Lincoln… Read more »

I see Riley sticking around. He has a beautiful home where his wife and kids love it here. He takes those kinds of things into consideration. There would be a cut in income for sure, another consideration. I have read comments, unsubstantiated of course, on Riley leaving but there has been no real facts on that topic. Your point about who would want him right now as a HC is spot on. Would he go nfl as an OC? Not to sure about that. That would be about a 75% pay cut. In 10 years after he matures as a… Read more »

NFL lol … how about not getting out coached by former dopepusher and pimp Johnny F ing Nansen. NFL would be a stupid move by LR at this point. Maybe do the job here first.

LR to the NFL won’t happen immediately since he would be taking a pay cut and having to relocate his family so soon after moving them. Plus he would not have full control of things in the NFL like he does at SC. So he’s here and that’s good for us.

I have never worried about losing a coach to the NFL, but I admit it’s a possibility. Looking at past USC coaches and the NFL, I really doubt Riley would make such a mistake. Ironically the USC coach with the most success in the NFL came to USC after being one of the worst coaches in the NFL. The difference was the control he had over the entire program. College coaches have an Athletic director over them and maybe a few middle managers, but not nearly the same restrictions as NFL coaches. Most college head coaches making the leap to… Read more »

I’d think NFL teams would want to see a well rounded coach (defense and special teams have been poor under LR) and see how well he does after Caleb is gone. He’d be a huge risk right now, imo, potentially staining a GM’s reputation. I guess it depends how desperate and risk tolerant an organization is.

Our new AD’s first major act needs to be to say, “Lincoln, I love you, but I am opening up the checkbook for you to begin working NOW at bringing in a premiere defensive coordinator at the end of the season. If need be, you can break it to your buddy that this is coming from above you and maybe he’ll still send you a Holiday card from time to time.” The change needs to be made at the end of the regular season, regardless of our circumstances (I am not concerned that we will have a playoff to worry… Read more »

Soft is a reputation SC has earned since PC. It will take some consistent smash-mouth teams to shake it.

Soft is not a reputation – it’s a reality. We are finesse and flash when we work, and a soft disorganized disaster when we don’t work. The only difference between now and CH’s attempt at the air raid with Harrell is that we did not have Caleb and we were disorganized way more often. But AGAIN, I am willing to accept LR as being in the middle of a process. If LR think’s he has accomplished his plan now, I’d be concerned.
