USC QB Caleb Williamsโ feet are proving as valuable as his arm
Even if itโs become routine, the way Williams has been able to extend plays to keep the USC offense moving should not be taken for granted
Adam Grosbard (OC Register)ย —ย LOS ANGELES โ The image has occurred so many times throughout No. 6 USCโs 5-0 start to the season, you might have become used to it.
Or, at least Caleb Williamsโ teammates have.
The quarterback drops back and soon finds himself under pressure. It looks like a sure sack with the defensive player having broken a block. But then Williams ducks down and sheds the tackle. Or he spins out of the clutches to continue skipping down the field.
โYouโre kind of desensitized to some of the special stuff he does,โ left guard Andrew Vorhees said.
But even if itโs become routine, the way Williams has been able to extend plays to keep the USC offense moving should not be taken for granted.
This season, Williams has been pressured on 66 of 188 dropbacks, according to Pro Football Focus. He has only allowed himself to be sacked 11 times. Seventeen times he has scrambled on an improvised run.
On the remaining 38 pressures, he has found a way to extend the play and make an attempt at a receiver, or throw the ball away and avoid losing yards.
โI feel like itโs just his will to make the play,โ receiver Jordan Addison said. โHe wants to do anything he can to get the first down or score a touchdown.โ
Williams said the origins date back to his childhood, when he was frequently one of the shorter kids playing games. So he had to use his speed and creativity to elude his classmates.
โThat was always kind of one of my things, once I got it, Iโd just kind of duck under, duck under the legs or anything like that,โ Williams said. โIโd say Iโd take a little pride in it when I was younger. But now, just trying to go out there and win the game and play to the best of my availability.โ
Williams said there are no specific drills he does at practice to help with this skill. Instead, itโs honed at practice, where he dodges USCโs array of pass rushers even in his yellow non-contact jersey.
But tight end Malcolm Epps believes Williamsโ rush-dodging ability is a testament to the work the sophomore quarterback does taking care of his body.
โWhat yโall donโt see is in the weight room. He lifts. Heย liftsย lifts,โ Epps said. โHeโs not like one of those quarterbacks that donโt lift like everybody.โ
For Epps and the rest of the USC receivers, theyโve learned not to give up on passing plays even when all appears lost.
โWe scrimmage it all the time because with him, he can escape anything,โ Epps said. โThere were a couple plays I was like, โDamn, he got sacked. Oh, weโre still running.โ It was one of those. So with him you gotta keep going or you might miss a play.โ
This skill will be particularly useful to Williams on Saturday when USC (5-0 overall, 3-0 Pac-12) takes on a Washington State team that is seventh nationally with 3.6 sacks per game. The Cougars (4-1, 1-1) are an aggressive bunch out front that are creative with their blitz packages.
But Williams says that wonโt speed up his mental clock as he goes through progressions at the Coliseum.
โThatโs one thing you donโt want to do as a QB. You donโt want to feel rushed, you donโt want somebody to make you feel rushed,โ Williams said. โIf you feel something, you get up in the pocket, you get out. Iโm not going to let anyone speed up my progressions and my receivers or anything like that.โ

Wilson AND Ryan did not look great….. Would Sam Darnold have won this game tonight (for either team ) ? …..I think Ryan has something like 11-12 turnovers so far this season as Colts QB .
So many of those teams will play each other. Coastal and JMU I think are in same conference. For sure the big 10 teams will. From the looks of it I think Clemson has the best odds of going undefeated, Syracuse will lose multiple games.
73-year-old former Trojan/Oakland Raider RB Clarence Davis was inaccurately pronounced dead by the Raiders — who retracted their egregious error earlier today. “The Raiders received notice of Clarence Davis’ passing but have found that information to be false,” the team said in a statement, via the Las Vegas Review Journal’s Vincent Bonsignore. “The Raiders extend our deepest apologies to the Davis family and the Raider Nation for the erroneous announcement.” on3.com — Davis, a Raider from 1971-78 after a standout career at USC, was a 1969 Trojan All-American and was part of the first all-Black backfield in Div I history alongside FB Sam… Read more ยป
Clarence Davis is often overlooked when people talk about great USC running backs. Following OJ was a difficult task and I thought CD handled it very well. I was fortunate to see him play in SC’s home games in the Coliseum from 1969-71. SC had the “Cardiac Kids” on Offense and the “Wild Bunch” on Defense. Great memories from those days!
Thank you for the list Allen. It should be noted that Clarence Davis and others on the list played for USC before Freshmen were allowed to play. If memory serves me right, Pat Haden and JK McKay played on the last Freshman team in 1971.

USC has its very own carnival barker towel wavers now and they aren’t going over so well with many Trojan fans, undoubtedly in part because UCLA’s Ed Kezirian used to do the same thing ad nauseam when he was the Chief Towel Waver patroling Bruin sidelines.
I’m pretty comfortable with USC beating 12.5 pt dog WSU at the Coliseum. That’s a pretty big spread vs a 4-1 team, but WSU doesn’t really have any good wins. Beating crap CAL doesn’t do a lot for me. The Trojans have too many highly skillful weapons, plus Caleb, and I haven’t been very impressed with the Cougs so far, especially after watching them totally collapse in Pullman and “Coug It” vs ORE. And I also don’t see how USC will be overlooking WSU because of UTAH. USC’s been through enough rough spots lately against total mediocrity to know they… Read more ยป
The key seems to be if the Wazzoo pass rush will keep them in the game and keep it close. With the D Line focused on getting to CW, maybe with a good run scheme, the pass rush will run past the RB putting Dye and Austin in the secondary.
For some reason, I think USC’s gonna thump this WSU team by 15 or more points. The Trojans, ranked #6, really should spank the Cougs good. Caleb Williams eats pass rushes for lunch.
WSU has to travel to Reser Stadium in Corvallis the next week, where I expect the #26 Cougs to lose to the Beavers too.
Thought that last week … by half was just hoping to win. The D gives up way too many gash plays and wide open receivers. Plus, can the O continue this astounding score per possession rate ! 1 turnover all season no fumbles. What a job by LR and staff but โthe just win babyโ effect is now on.
Dangerous Longhorn QB Quinn Ewers is over his left clavicle sprain and is returning to action for the Red River Rivalry in the Cotton Bowl this Saturday at 9 am PT (ABC).
You would think that LR has defined the defense used by OSU and others to break down his offense. If Caleb is not getting the time necessary to make his reads and progressions then a new scheme or additional manning like two tight ends or two backs, with one breaking out as a safety valve is an option. If LR has not solved this issue then USC could be in trouble with both the WSU and Utah, as they will probably do the same thing OSU did. I do think LR is good enough to overcome, as we saw last… Read more ยป
I’ll give some of the 66 rushed plays to the defense because they are scheming against the pass with edge rushers, but not all of those plays were good defense. Some were just plain missed blocks. I am not blaming the line for all of those either. Our receivers and backs take off like they’re in a flag football game. Everyone wants to catch the ball, but nobody wants to protect the passer. There is no doubt Caleb Williams is a magician. I had to Google highlights of the ASU game to see that second and ten play from the… Read more ยป
CW has had to scramble 33% of his dropbacks. If I was Vorhees I would be embarassed as hell by the line play. I wonder what the % of dropbacks is for the last 2 games? Sure seems higher than a third.
It seems like USC’s O-line could be a bigger problem in pass protection than I anticipated at the beginning of the season based on our games against ORE ST and ASU. Hopefully, it comes together in the offensive trenches for USC before Williams runs into real trouble out there.
NFL Network guys RIPPING Nathaniel Hackett right now (My Colts BACKED INTO a win vs Broncos tonight ).
Russell Wilson must be undergoing some kind of nervous breakdown — because he can’t play anymore. And I’ve always been a big Wilson fan.
Hackett didn’t lose this game. Wilson did.
Wilson AND Ryan did not look great….. Would Sam Darnold have won this game tonight (for either team ) ? …..I think Ryan has something like 11-12 turnovers so far this season as Colts QB .
Saying Wilson “didn’t look great” is like saying the Hindenburg was a “fire”.
Sorry, I couldn’t help it! It just suddenly popped into my head. ๏ปฟโ๏ปฟ

The Snake Stabler was phenomenal. Your classic hard-drinkin’, all-night livin’, clutch gamer wearing the famous Pirate on his helmet.
Clarence Davis had a bad, but well-deserved rep for his stone hands, yet he’s part of NFL lore’s greatest receptions ever.

I don’t like them either. It seems bush league to me. While we’re at it, can we get rid of the DJ at the game too?
A little too Pop Warner I would say.
But if the Trojan players like it and are on board, whatever works for them, works for me.
Way too much like the Sarkettes and Suckisian fake enthusiasm
and break out the Cutty Sark!
I think it is kind of minor league stuff but I can ignore it and be okay.
