Column: Hand him the Heisman already. USC’s Caleb Williams once again shows he’s the best
Bill Plaschke (LA Times) — He was running to his left. He was throwing to his right. He was leaving his feet.
The ball nonetheless flew out of his hand as if he were a shortstop firing from the hole. It soared downfield over long swaths of green, over the heads of stunned defenders and into the outstretched arms of a wide-open receiver running untouched into the end zone.
It was brash. It was beautiful. It was pure Caleb. It was all Heisman.
The 71-yard touchdown pass from USC quarterback Caleb Williams to Tahj Washington early in the Trojans’ 48-41 victory at Colorado on Saturday was an opening salvo that evolved into a striking mandate.
The defending Heisman Trophy winner once again is the best football player in the country.
Williams is having not only an encore season, he’s having a better season.
He deserves to be the clear leader in a Heisman race that should be his to lose.
Just give him the award already.
“Things have been working,” Williams acknowledged during the postgame news conference with his usual understatement. “You have to keep going, keep working hard, that’s the only way things keep being smooth and feeling that way.”
Smooth? Yeah, smooth, as in, he stared down an uneven Colorado defense and flattened it.
In a game that needed every bit of his greatness, Williams threw for 403 yards and tied a career-high with six touchdown passes while marred only by his first interception of the year. He was not only good enough to overcome Colorado’s tacklers, he was good enough to overcome his team’s lack of tacklers.
Full disclosure, this column initially was going to be about that Trojans defense. It was going to blast defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and a group that gave up 564 yards to an offense that gained 199 yards the previous week against Oregon. The tackling was so bad even by Lincoln Riley standards that it was the most yards given up by USC since the coach arrived last year.
“That was embarrassing, honestly,” safety Bryson Shaw told reporters.
If Colorado had not been beset by bad game management and shaky play calling, the Buffs might have overcome a 27-point deficit and caught the Trojans after a strong second half, and this column was going to be about the long-term fears born of a defense that is far from national championship-caliber.
But do you really want to read the same thing again and again? Every week this space could feature a rip of the Trojans defense. Every week the criticism will continue until Riley becomes more actively involved in the defensive leadership and perhaps makes some hard but necessary changes.
“No, it doesn’t look like last year,” claimed Riley, who reiterated his support of Grinch. “There’s a lot that’s improved.”
Truthfully, it looks exactly like last year. But instead of focusing again on that mess, let’s focus on one USC player who wins when the defense loses. At this rate, Williams will have to remain in games and throw for 400 yards every week even for the Trojans to have a chance. His numbers will be astronomical. He will have to carry this team while bearing a sense of responsibility shared by none of the other top Heisman candidates.
“Yeah, we’re always in it with Caleb,” Shaw said.
Williams arrived Saturday in the perfect spot to make his season’s first statement that he deserves to overcome the tugs of history and win the second Heisman that has eluded nine other winners who returned to college.
This was the place, Boulder’s rocking Folsom Field, ground zero for college football madness. This was the opponent, new coach Deion Sanders having turned the rebuilt Buffaloes into the most-watched college football team in years. This was the time, national viewers crowded around their television sets with the game kicking off at noon Eastern time.
It was all set up for Williams to show up and show out.
He did more than that. He did his best Patrick Mahomes.
Running everywhere. Throwing from every angle. Commanding the field while doing things that only the defending NFL most valuable player and Super Bowl champion Mahomes can do.
Hitting Dorian Singer between two defenders for an eight-yard touchdown pass. He hit Mario Williams on a perfect 24-yard strike over a linebacker.
A couple of darts to Brenden Rice for scores of 26 and six yards. A sweet lob to backup tight end Jude Wolfe for three yards to complete the scoring.
And, later, like Kansas City’s Mahomes, he threw bouquets to everyone but himself.
“A lot of credit goes to the offensive line. You can’t have however many passing yards I had or touchdowns, you can’t have as many rushing yards as we had without them,” he said. “Wide receivers catching the ball, doing their job. Running backs, carrying out fakes and things like that. It’s a team effort for me to go out there and put up those numbers.”
He did more than put up numbers, he landed daggers.
Williams threw for touchdown passes after the Buffaloes missed a field goal and had a punt blocked, making them pay for their sins. Although the Trojans didn’t score in the fourth quarter, he stayed on the field long enough to keep the lousy Trojans defense off it and secured the victory.
You also want numbers? After five games Williams has accounted for 24 touchdowns with just one turnover while completing 75% of his passes.
Williams is so good again, even better than last season, that there is sometimes a ho-hum feeling watching him. It takes games like Saturday to fully appreciate what is being witnessed.
“People definitely take what he does for granted, and it won’t be until he leaves that people will really realize the greatness that they’re watching and what they really get to come out here and see every single day,” Rice said.
After the game I received a text from a longtime observer who said Williams is the best college football player he has seen since Herschel Walker. In my return message, I trumped that.
Caleb Williams is the best college football player I’ve seen, period, and I experienced nearly every moment of Reggie Bush.
Saturday made it clear he will win the Heisman again — hello, Archie Griffin — and he’s already been anointed as the first pick in next spring’s NFL draft. Here’s where it gets interesting.
Arguably the worst team in the NFL is the Chicago Bears. They could be looking for a quarterback and a coach. Wonder if Williams and Riley would go there as a package deal?
No matter where Williams ends up, and his father, Carl, has subtly and smartly threatened a power play to make sure his son goes to the best possible market, he still has several months remaining here and it’s best to cherish them.
Who knows, at this rate one Saturday he might even equal former Houston quarterback’s David Klingler’s NCAA record of 11 touchdown passes in one game.
And the Trojans will win, 77-76.

Will Ferrell (a kicker on his HS team who made a school record 14 FGs as a SR) joined Peyton and Eli on ESPN2 during the first half of the Seahawks vs Giants game tonight. At the end of the 1st Q, Seattle leads 7-0.
Actually, Ferrell’s already on right now! He was hilarious. (“Mom! Meatloaf! Mom! Meatloaf!“)
Hoosiers take some action…
Following a 44-17 loss to MARYD, IU announced the firing of offensive coordinator Walt Bell on Sunday after a rough 2-3 start to the 2023 season. Quality control coach Rod Carey, a former Hoosier player and coach at TEM and N ILL, was named Bell’s replacement.
I watched the replay of LSU – Ole Miss and have to say that their defenses could certainly hang with ours. 😉
(Play of game to me was last play of 3rd quarter when Jaxson dart hurdled a defender.)
I guess misery loves company, huh? Upset LSU fans would like to see Brian Kelly fired about right now, and if he isn’t careful, he won’t last long in Baton Rouge regardless of his salary.
But I’m glad Lane Kiffin, someone who gave me some excellent insights about recruiting, broke the hearts of Tiger fans everywhere. He’s still got games at Auburn, Athens and Starkville along with A&M in Oxford.
Can’t wait to see OU v TEXAS in Dallas this weekend. Venables vs Sark in the Red River Rivalry. Love that game.
Call me crazy, but I like Kiffin much more than Kelly. IMO, Kiffin’s job is much tougher at Ole Miss than Kelly’s. I think Kelly is overrated in that his ND teams padded their schedules with several cupcakes every year, and the times he’s gotten to the playoffs, his teams have been blown out. I think his career has topped out at LSU, and he doesn’t seem to be getting better in year 2 even with the transfer portal and the looser admission standards. He arguably has the best QB he’s ever had, but just can’t get it done when… Read more »
As I’ve said here before, I’m a big fan of Lane. Since he got booted from USC, he’s done very well for himself and he’s got a lot of grateful Land Shark fans to show for it. I’d love to see LK go undefeated the rest of the way, though I doubt that will happen.
He tried to rescue USC at literally an impossible time in our history, and paid a big price for it. Fortunately, Saban saved his butt, but then he just kicked it again 24-10 on Sept. 23. Nobody gets out alive.
After 58 years of watching USC football, I’ve never seen a player quite like Caleb Williams. Reggie and OJ come close, but Caleb has the ball in his hands on every offensive play, and he is as a creative college QB as I’ve ever seen. He’s an accurate passer and can sling the ball from just about any arm angle possible. As a runner, he’s very elusive. To me, he’s a combination of my ’77 classmate Vince Evans and great USC QB Rodney Peete who finished second in the 1988 Heisman voting to Barry Sanders. I sure hope Caleb gets… Read more »
Rodney Peete in today’s game … oh my.
Yes Caleb is something. Thank you LR for bring him along and saving USC football.
Just win baby!
TrojanRon, I agree with you. I have seen Caleb once in person (the Tulane game, when he was hurt). I hope to see him play again in a Bowl game when he is well. He is a a very special talent, we will not likely see again our life times. Right now, a lot of folks are down on LR for his mistake in not replacing Grinch, but LR is the best O coach in the nation, and his O runs through the QB. And Caleb is not only good at playing that position, he is amazing. We are going… Read more »
TrojanRJJ, I agree that USC will have a top QB as long as LR is the HC. I just wish SC would bring in a top Defensive mind like Jack Del Rio or Ed Orgeron to oversee the Defense like Kliff Kingsbury is overseeing the Offense. A lot of people diss me for suggesting Del Rio, but Jack is a very respected defensive coordinator in the NFL. He didn’t cut it as a HC, but the player talent and head offices in Jacksonville and then the Raiders were subpar back then. Jack was an All-American Linebacker for USC in 1984-1985.… Read more »
I see where some Casino’s have SC as a 21 or 22 point favorite over Arizona .USC needs………NEEDS ………. NEEDS to win that game by that many points (AT LEAST) !!!!!
SC needs to play a complete game on all sides of the ball and win something like 49-10 to get everyone off their backs and then go to ND and smash them as well.
TrojanMPA90, I think SC will most likely need that complete game against ND in South Bend to win. I doubt we need it to beat AZ.
HOF10, I feel fairly confident that SC will not beat AZ by 3 TDs. AZ is a better team than either CO or ASU. I think SC will probably win, but it will be a repeat of the CO game in some way or other.
It will be interesting to see how LR and the Grinch deal with an increasingly aggressive and negative press now that USC has proven these “rusty bucket games” are becoming more and more the norm. The always secretive LR has been increasingly painted into a more questionable corner, whether it be by needlessly fighting with local reporters, or failing to acknowledge what the entire CFB world can see. Rough waters ahead? Or a return to playoff team stature? Only one thing’s for sure. Caleb Williams could actually win Heisman #2 if the rest of the team, especially on defense, doesn’t… Read more »
If you are Grinch how in the world do you ignore all of this noise?
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/dan-wolken/2023/10/01/misery-index-college-football-week-5-usc-lincoln-riley/71023482007/
No doubt LR has seen better days, regardless of what his record is. The clock is definitely ticking on his decision to keep Grinch employed.
I wonder what the defensive players will think of all the negative publicity regarding Alex Grinch. Will doubts creep into their minds or will they step it up to protect Grinch.
If you believe Bryson Shaw, the team should rally to help Grinch keep his job. But who the heck knows if that will really happen?
Sitting behind the bench at CU … the team looked enthused and engaged. Coaches and players very supportive to one another whether good play or bad.
Very clean game. No cheap crap or excessive smack talk like CU vs Oregon. You can tell Prime has a lot of respect for USC and LR.
Shaw was our worst performer. He was picked on over and over in the 2nd half. Once they went 4 and 5 wide, whoever he covered was thrown to. Not sure why we didn’t put someone else in there.
Shaw openly admitted he was a liability and blamed himself. That he wasn’t replaced says much about USC’s true secondary talent, USC’s coaches, and LR’s coaching approach and style. As written by the OC Register’s Mirjam Swanson — “One positive for the Trojans, they can count on the accountability of players such as Bryson Shaw, who defended Alex Grinch on Saturday, carrying the blame and putting it on himself and his teammates: “Coach Grinch, he’s doing a great job. I mean, we’re letting him down,” the senior safety told reporters in Boulder. “That’s point-blank period. We’re letting him down. I… Read more »
I was radio surfing sports talk shows this morning among Jim Rome, Colin Cowherd and College Sports Nation. Seemed every channel I went to had a riff on The Grinch and LR. Paul Finebaum already weighed in over the weekend. No doubt, this is the narrative for the time being. It will not change anytime soon, or with just one game. It will take consistent improvement against several teams considered good before the needle will move, which is basically the second half of the season. I think the narrative is so strong that even if the D manages to change… Read more »
The LR doubters are mounting at breakneck speed. But the Trojans and Caleb Williams sure are fun to watch. Anything can still happen this season for USC, including the Trojans winning it all. But if USC loses to ORE in Eugene and ND in South Bend, the tone will begin to turn very dark, with Caleb’s probable last year at USC deemed a massive missed opportunity. It’s gonna be a crazy final seven brutal, uninterrupted, games of the reg season for USC. LR’s gonna have to pull every rabbit out of his hat to win it all. He’s been a… Read more »
I think the most frustrating part is know what we could be. Everyone has always said we don’t need a top D. Just an average one. We all bought into all of the additional talent on that side of the ball and this year would be different. Only to find out we are Charlie Brown and Lucy continues to pull the ball away.
as you said, still love my Trojans just wish we had a D.
Stewart Mandel’s Final Thoughts (The Athletic): The national title race is wide open (but I’m ruling out USC) Mandel — Another year, another Lincoln Riley team whose defense does almost nothing to help its offense. That formula nearly got USC to the College Football Playoff last season, but in a loaded Pac-12 with the likes of No. 7 Washington and No. 9 Oregon waiting, I don’t see the 5-0 Trojans even making it back to the conference championship game this year. Caleb Williams threw for six touchdowns Saturday against Colorado, and the game still came down to a last-minute onside kick. The… Read more »
It is sad. At some point when does Grinch’s pride step in. For years he has been blamed as the Achilles heal of LR and done nothing to fix it. He is the person most blame for LR not making it to the top.
Mandel: “My clicks are dropping, I am going to dis Lincoln Riley and remove USC from any championship consideration. That should help”.
Steveg, You think Mandel is incorrect about our D? I have come to respect his opinion. For example, he was the only national writer during the Helton era who consistently correctly reported on Helton. Rather obvious that as of now SC does not look like a contender for the NC final 4. SC plays 3 top 10 teams during the season (ND, WA and OR), with 2 of the 3 being on the road. SC is the only team in the nation to face 3. On top of that SC must also play a very tough UCLA squad in a… Read more »
Fair enough … kid is amazing
Has it been two weeks? I didn’t like it when the Heisman was awarded to the same person twice, but in this case I might agree with honoring a person twice. Caleb has been called generational and the best player period, and he is flat out the most fun player to watch I can remember in a long time. I actually think NFL teams will trade up to draft him. As for the poll spoken about below, I believe dropping a team that has won is not not only insulting to the team, but insulting to the team that lost.… Read more »
Assuming Caleb keeps being Caleb for the remainder of this season, any Heisman winner awarded it over him would be illegitimate, and they would probably know it, which would be sad. So, in that case, it would be time for Caleb to be Moving in Stereo! (Everyone loves a good Phoebe reference!).
If Lincoln Riley fires Alex Grinch today or tomorrow, who could step in as the Interim DC? Would it be Donte Williams, Shaun Nua, or Greg Brown?
Good grief … let’s win 80-77
Donte’s seat is hotter than Grinch’s, in my view.
Yeah I don’t thing based on what he did in 2021 that Donte is ready to be a DC. I would give it to Greg Brown since he’s been a DC before. You also start interviews ASAP with other possibilities like Jim Leonhard.
Can we add Roy Manning and Brian Odom, who are the linebacker coaches, to your list?
Sure that is fine with me. At least they’re already here and know the personnel we have.
I meant to be removed/fired. Linebackers have not shown an improvement worthy of the new talent.
Oh I didn’t catch that. I don’t think Riley cans all three of them this deep in the season.
I don’t think LR will can anyone during this season. I don’t think we will have an interim anyone. If I were a betting man, Grinch will be retained after the season with an overhaul of position coaches. I hate to say that.
Yeah I think we’re going to be stuck with Grinch. Hopefully things get better on the defensive side but it’s going to be a wild ride for sure.
Would it be addition by subtraction?
Greg Brown has the experience.
Gary Patterson is available. I’d take him.
Canzano has SC #4 in the Pac, behind Oregon, WA, and WA State. UCLA now has a tall order in beating both Oregon State and WSU. Playing Oregon State in Corvallis is at least as difficult as playing Oregon in Eugene. In fact, I would rather play Oregon in Eugene than Oregon State in Corvallis. Would be crazy of Oregon State and WSU play for the Pac Championship. Not likely but not highly unlikely either. To be honest, I cannot see Donte Moore beating either OSU (in Covallis) or WSU in the Rose Bowl), unless he improves gigantically in a… Read more »
Washington D is worse than ours
How about that! I wrote a post with most of the same theme as Plaschke’s article! My post on the predictive rift on the Grinch narrative is below the very predictable Times article (by Luca who is probably becoming Scott Wolf’s favorite journalist) presenting the Grinch narrative (that the SC D is lousy because Grinch stinks at his job and LR does not give one whit about D & this fact is going to sink SC’s season and waste Caleb’s talent). In fact, as Plaschke points out (and I did not), the power of the Grinch narrative contains a silver… Read more »
This Trojan team reminds me of the Fouts /Coryell SD Chargers. Amazingly entertaining offense and no defense. Throw out the point spread last team with the ball wins. Let the other team score so the offense can get back on the field.
This kid has the worst luck:
Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy was taken to a local hospital in Knoxville after suffering what appeared to be a significant lower leg injury in Saturday’s game against South Carolina.
Well……………. We stayed in the top 10 in the AP POLL (I disagree with that) >>>>> NCAA College Football Rankings: AP Top 25 Football Poll | AP News
I do not believe we belong in the TOP 10 …..(Not this week at least ),
I’d keep us in the Top 10 at #9 because Caleb Williams is THAT good. 5-1 Notre Dame is #10 and they were one 4th-and-16 play away from losing to DUKE.
My opinion of the USC Roster AND Entire Coaching staff has been lowered and the ONLY way I will raise it back up is ….On The Field Results and On The Field Results only …..Transfer portal and Big Name Coaches now has Zero Value To me right now .
So wins don’t matter?
Everybody mentions National Championship with USC …. Based on the way they are playing right now …… Do we look like we belong on the same field as Georgia or Michigan or Oregon ? Would you want this team to play one of those 3 teams this coming Saturday ? Chris I am very VERY concerned my USC Trojans team AND Coaching staff might be a bit Over-hyped ….. I PRAY I AM WRONG …..FIGHT ON !!!!!
I’ll answer “yes.” See my earlier post. In my view, we can beat any of the teams you mention with our “A” game. The problem is consistency over the long term. Our defense just means that anything can happen in a game, and with that, the law of averages will get you over the long haul. We need O-line improvement and consistency on offense as an insurance policy against our D. We have to be able to score late.
OK …….Then I wish we where going to Eugene this week then ……We look ready for that now right ?
Everyone thinks Riley needs to get personally involved with the defense. Wrong. He knows nothing about it, and it looks pretty hopeless to fix it mid-season anyway. If I am Riley, look at Grinch today and say, “I love you as a friend, but I can’t harbor you anymore. Fix it, or we’re going to have a tough talk later this year.” Then I spend the better part of the next two weeks working on developing greater O-Line depth and cohesion before we get to ND and Utah. We have a perfect offense when the O-line works. Start working on… Read more »
My reaction (which I know probably AIN’T gonna make some SC Fans happy) is based on rating USC Today Not 2 weeks from now .
Yeah, but the problem I am having with what you are saying is that it doesn’t mean anything to say USC could not win a natty today. Nobody can win a natty today. It’s a long season. To demonstrate why it is a fool’s exercise: If you give me Georgia, and you ask whether they can go undefeated against OUR remaining schedule, I am going to say almost certainly not (especially given that Auburn game). Not counting playoffs, we have four ranked teams ahead of us, three of them in the top 10, and we face two of those on… Read more »
Well right now I do not consider us a TOP 10 ten team ……..will we get there I hope so but my doubts ARE REAL .And only USC putting a better product on the field Not hype …..Words or opinions are gonna get rid of my doubts .
We would put up a bunch on all three. Georgia just won by skin of their teeth against a pedestrian Auburn. Oregon by all rights should’ve lost to Texas tech. They have their own issues as well. I don’t think we are that far off. We just pay much closer attention to our own problems.
It’s rare…very rare to see Plasche so amped up in the positive for anything USC. Caleb certainly stole the spotlight from Prime in this game. Instant Celebrity in the NFL !
Coaches Poll drops USC one spot and puts us at #7. Trojans remain #1 in the Pac-12 ahead of #8 UW and #9 ORE. Coaches Poll top 25 1 Georgia (59) 2 Michigan (1) 3 Ohio State (2) 4 Texas (1) 5 Florida State 6 Penn State 7 USC 8 Washington (1) 9 Oregon 10 Alabama 11 Notre Dame 12 Oklahoma 13 North Carolina 14 Washington State 15 Ole Miss 16 Oregon State 17 Miami 18 Tennessee 19 Utah 20 Kentucky 21 Duke 22 Missouri 23 LSU 24 Fresno State 25 Louisville Others receiving votes: Maryland 81; Kansas State 73;… Read more »
I would reverse that order, Oregon is the best of the Pac right now anyway.
If this were next year the Big10 would have 6 in the top 10
Washington let Arizona back in last night. Oregon looks like the complete package in the Pac12 so far. Expecting a shoot out with the Zonies. Just going to enjoy Caleb and not take any game for granted. Yesterday looked like Tulane all over again, 4th quarter breakdown in all 3 phases. SC will get a beat down by someone, most likely Oregon.
The RPi Poll ( The least relevant poll) this morning has USC at # 9 …..For whatever that is worth .
If USC gets placed anywhere in the Top 10, I’ll be happy. Lots of teams didn’t look that good yesterday, so maybe we’ll stand pat because of Caleb.
It pains me to say it, but I have agree with old Bill.
