Former Los Alamitos quarterback Malachi Nelson transfers out of USC
Nelson, one of the top quarterbacks in the class of 2023, has reportedly hit the transfer portal, a sign the Trojans could be bringing in their next quarterback
Luca Evans (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — He was supposed to be the heir apparent at Troy, taking the torch from Caleb Williams as Lincoln Riley’s hand-picked next protege.
Instead, Malachi Nelson appears to have walked into the sunset before he even had a shot at filling Williams’ shoes.
On Sunday night, reports surfaced from 247 Sports that Nelson had entered the transfer portal, a surprising and sudden end to the tenure of one of Riley’s biggest recruiting wins since taking the head-coaching job at USC. Nelson was widely regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the class of 2023 after a standout career at Los Alamitos, committing to USC after throwing for 39 touchdowns his junior year with the Griffins.
His freshman year, though, never much got going as a Trojan, looking spotty in cap and then spending the season mired on the scout-team and third on the depth chart behind Williams and backup Miller Moss. He battled injuries for much of the year, Riley alluded in December, but seemed to have a path to chase a starting job with Williams likely heading for the NFL Draft and left to compete with Moss.
“He’s certainly going to get there and certainly has a bright future and has battled for a lot of things,” Riley said in early December. “So we’re eager to get him back completely healthy and back to where he’s developing on a really fast track and I don’t think he’s that far away from it, but that’s still been a little bit of a process.”
It’ll be an unfinished process, as Nelson leaves in a potential harbinger of things to come. As Riley made it clear USC would “look in the portal at some quarterbacks,” the coach said two weeks ago, Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard posted on his Instagram story a video of him on a visit to the Coliseum this weekend — amid ceaseless buzz Howard could step into Williams’ vacated starting role.

We keep talking about LR and how many Heisman QB’s he’s produced. Who cares! How many Heisman QB’s have won National Championship over the last decade?!?! How many National Championship’s has LR won? The recipe for success in College football is elite defense, dominate offensive lines, and running the football. Yes you need a good QB but all he has to be is capable.
I’m excited to watch Miller play. We all know he will be nothing like Caleb, who is? But I do think he might do some things, like get the ball out quickly, that Caleb didn’t do because Caleb is magic. Also ready to see the young guys step up. We should see a heavy dose of freshman in this game. I think we will see 2 start on the O line. Right now, I’m not even worried about winning, just want to see the young guys respond. But ask me during the game and it will be totally different. also,… Read more »
Am I seeing that right – SC hasn’t got a single player in the Top 69 of the Rivals 250? Two years into LR, as with the results last season, particularly after that shitty UCLA game, that is pretty unacceptable. Ohio State has eight players there. Notre Dame has five. Oklahoma has three, Colorado has two. But our first player on the list is #70. Not good enough. There had better be some flips no one sees coming if we’re going to compete nationally in the next few years.
Rock, Merry Christmas! Where you been, buddy? In 2023, SC football crashed, burned and sank like the Titanic. LR was at the helm but did not go down with the ship. LR made many mistakes, the largest being (1) thinking D does not matter that much (his O could outscore anybody) and to the extent it does, Alex Grinch was up to job (huge mistake) and (2) thinking that SC does not need a well funded and managed “pay for play” NIL to compete for elite talent. He was dead wrong on both. The second mistake was probably larger than… Read more »
Merry Christmas RJJ – I hope you and your fam enjoy Xmas and the New Year and I wish the same to all here. I can’t argue with you, and it looks like an underwhelming Signing Day today is going to be another shot in the belly. Really, I think the story of the LR era so far is how lucky he was to not lose more games that he should have lost last in his first year, including to Oregon State and UCLA, which losses would have probably better revealed the “truth” of what the LR era has been… Read more »
What’s more notable is that Clay Helton took us to a PAC-12 championship, and had a better defense!!! Even more notable would be getting rid of Kiffen, Cutty Sark, and Big ED! Texas and Ole Miss would destroy us!! I’m not sold on LR at all. Helton was less of a talent as a coach he had less talented players and produced more than LR has hands down. LR had a QB for the ages in Williams. With a top 5 offense a could not even produce a middle of the road defense! Darnold was far less talented than Williams.… Read more »
The Trojans are on a roll! Four-star 2024 DE Carlon Jones becomes USC’s 21st 2024 commit. USC is now ranked 16th by Rivals, and 17th by 247Sports — Matt Moreno (Trojan Sports) — A visit to USC over the weekend sold four-star defensive lineman Carlon Jones on the program. Monday, the 6-foot-2.5, 290-pound recruit from Bay City, Texas announced his commitment to play for Lincoln Riley, Shaun Nua and the Trojans. USC found itself in a battle with Ohio State leading into the early signing period this week, but there will be no waiting for the Trojans. An official visit to Los… Read more »
I like recruits that have a nice offer list…..and Jones does, including bama and Ohio St. Starting to get some nice talent on the lines.
On the I wonder list…..Donte Moore is going to Oregon…..I did not see it with him this year with the Bruins but after what happened to Nix…..who knows.
Carlon Jones was one of OHIO ST’s last two prep DL targets. The former NEB commit visited Columbus on Dec 8, following Shaun Nua’s in-home visit after a late USC offer on Nov 30.
This is a terrific USC victory over the Buckeyes for a national recruit in a great need area for the Trojans. Congratulations to D’Anton Lynn for spurring this recent uptick in USC’s defensive talent.
You really think after two seasons at USC he left to follow Donte? Its possible but I think he may have had a talk with Lynn and decided his best shot is elsewhere. Of course he has the 5 stars so I also think $$$ comes into play. I am not liking where college football has gone. Losing Curtis actually hurts our future, that one is really hard to figure out.
Going to need a LB out of the portal to fill up some depth.
If USC can reel in Kamari Ramsey from ucla we will forget all about Domani.
It seems the Media that covers Pro Football is kind of calling Michael Pittman Jr ( has a shot at over 100 receptions and quite possibly 1400 reception yards AND a spot in the Pro Bowl this season ). But they are referring the phrase “NFL Tough Guy of the Week ” To Pittman for taking that HIT in the game vs the Steelers . Kirk Ferentz acting like he’s won something. Puffing his chest out and taking shots at Riley. Just because you coach at a school that doesn’t have any expectations for 25 years doesn’t mean you’re elite.

Now for a different opinion, I wasn’t impressed with Malachi when I saw him play. Maybe he was a big fish in a little pond meaning his surroundings in high school were good enough to make him look good on paper. Maybe the coaching staff didn’t see good mechanics or quick reflexes. Maybe some intrinsic weakness that couldn’t be overcome. I don’t think Riley would throw away a diamond in the rough. (But I could be wrong?)
This is what happens when you don’t trust in your recruits. I’ll go spend my NIL proceeds for a QB in the portal instead of trusting my recruits who are the best in the nation at that position. Building your defense for the future in the Big10 is more important than spending your NIL proceeds on a QB when we are still a far cry away from being a contender!
so the money we spent on our defensive staff hires is negated because we also want a QB? I guess the 1st team all pac 12 LB we just got along with his all Pac12 brother show we are unserious about defense.
I’m not saying the recruits we got defensively are not good. I’m saying why do we need a QB in the portal when we are not even contending?!?! Especially when we get the best recruits in the nation at that position!! How many Heisman QB’s have there been in the National Championship in the last however many years?! It’s elite defense, offensive line and running the football that wins championships. It’s still LR ball taking a QB when it’s not needed.
Reports were that Nelson had a bad attitude, and had trouble reading defenses. But you advocate just rolling the dice with him, and make no attempt to upgrade the most important position on the field. Why should I trust what Riley wants to do at QB, when clearly are more qualified. Glad your not making these decisions for SC.
Admit it- you are a bruin troll, correct?
Try looking at the history of National Championship teams the last few years. How many Heisman trophy candidates are there at QB? Are we contending for a National Championship currently?!?! NO!!! National Championship teams have elite defense and offensive lines and they run the football. Regardless of the defensive recruits we got so far we’re still on LR ball which means offensive minded moves. IE getting a QB when you have the best recruits in the Nation at that position. Question what do we have to loose by not getting a QB in the portal?!? I guess it’s the end… Read more »
Also btw if Riley is such a masterful QB whisper then it really should not be a problem for him to develop guys at the biggest QB factory of any school in college right?!?!
I think this is a very simple analysis, clearly given below. Whatever one can say about LR, he is the #1 QB coach and talent evaluator in collegiate FB. As I have written several times, if LR offers a QB, the QB would be nuts to turn him down. His track record of QB development is clearly the best in the nation at the present time, maybe the best of all time. He did not think Nelson ready to take over and brought in another QB. He also did not think Moss was ready. My guess is Moss will stick… Read more »
If we’re not contending then why not give them a chance. No one gets the QB talent we get it’s a privilege. We don’t need to spend our NIL proceeds on an elite QB if we are not contending. Those proceeds need to go to building a defense and offensive line. This is where LR fails. Defensive recruits do there homework they look at the tendencies of coaches. “LR we are committed to having an elite defense.” If you we’re committed to having an elite defense you would not be using your NIL proceeds on QB when you already have… Read more »
Fighton74, Where do you get your information that the KSU transfer QB is getting “pay for play” NIL money? My guess is he is getting ZERO of those funds. My additional guess is he came for three reasons: (1) “earn it” NIL (he stands to make millions if he performs well – SC is the best place in the nation for “earn it” NIL for a QB who performs), (2) coaching for the NFL draft, and (3) to complete for the Heisman. (He stood zero chance of getting a Heisman at KSU). . I think the “pay for play” NIL… Read more »
Maybe not, but history would tell you that an offensive position would get the pay to play card. I’m not saying we haven’t gotten some good defensive recruits at all. More of point is the direction of the program going into the Big-10. Which is obviously defensively heavy and running the football. When you are trying to get defensive recruits they do there homework too and there looking at the tendencies of coaches and there decisions. Not surprising given Riley’s visit to Will Howard. With all the hype Nelson had coming in to USC, I was looking forward to seeing him play. Always liked when a local high school star came to USC, was a backup, and then stepped into the starting role like Pat Haden and Paul McDonald who were two of the QBs when I was a student at USC.
Disappointing. He would have gotten good money at USC, probably already has, although maybe not as much as elsewhere. But, any kid who is afraid of competition is not going to cut it at any top program. I wish him the best, but doubt he’ll be a superstar elsewhere if he has that fragile of a competitive spirit and ego.

Wow, what is going on.
when you bring in the 1st team Pac12 linebacker, that guy plays. Gentry, Cobb, Davis all staying. My best guess.

Carlon Jones commit! Took him away from Ohio St. Good work D staff. This is type of body we need.

We got two interior D lineman in one week. Carlon was much more in demand buts still good to see two guys we need.
