“Big Harry” Hornery Leads These Small Ball Trojans

From loaning shoes to rehab tips, Harrison Hornery has become vital to USC’s rebuild

Luca Evans (OC Register)  —  LOS ANGELES — At the start of the summer, USC forward Harrison Hornery was decompressing back home in Australia when he got a call from one of his new teammates. It was Josh Cohen, a transfer from UMass. He’d forgotten his shoes.

Hornery was with family, a day’s time zone away, 8,000 miles removed from USC. That was intentional. The program he had known for three formative years of his life had crumbled in a matter of weeks, former head coach Andy Enfield and his entire staff heading east to SMU, the entirety of the roster around him either graduating or transferring or leaping to the NBA. Hornery had already talked with new coach Eric Musselman, and he was set on staying. But he needed time to reflect.

Then Cohen rang, Musselman’s first transfer commit. They had never talked before. But Cohen needed some shoes.

There was nobody else, really, for Cohen to call. There was nobody else for anyone to call. Hornery was the last player on scholarship standing, a fourth-year forward who had received sparse playing time suddenly tasked as the last foundation of a program importing transfers by the day. So, eventually, he gave Cohen some shoes.

When he arrived at USC, Boise State transfer Chibuzo Agbo Jr. also – somehow – forgot to bring basketball shoes. Hornery gave him a pair, too.

“That was pretty selfless of him,” Agbo Jr. said Thursday, after a USC summer practice. “I mean, that set the tone of who he is and what this team’s about.”

The video player is currently playing an ad.

Rather improbably, amid USC’s early-month program rebirth under Musselman, their most important piece has been a 6-foot-10 kid from Toowoomba, Australia who has never averaged as much as four points per game in his three-year career. As an entire roster departed and a new roster coalesced around him, Hornery stayed firm, even in the nerve-racking weeks when he had no idea who would fill the lockers next to him. It didn’t even really matter, to Hornery, who the coach was. He had six classes left to graduate.

He hasn’t simply stayed, either. He’s watered, single-handedly, the budding culture of a mishmash program that desperately needs a strong culture for any hope of success in 2024-25. Hornery threw everyone’s phone number – all 11 transfers, eventually – into a group chat, and texted individual players on where to live, and loaned shoes.

When Xavier transfer Desmond Claude discussed his recovery from elbow surgeries in the offseason, a procedure cleaning up some loose debris, he thanked Hornery, unprompted.

“Shoutout to Harry for the rehab,” he said.

Hornery, Michigan transfer Terrence Williams said, had introduced him to USC’s “Little Galen” athlete-specific cafeteria. It is now his favorite spot to eat, anywhere in L.A.

“It’s just little stuff like that, though, you appreciate the sole survivor,” Williams said Thursday, smiling. “And that’s why I love Big Harry, man. He’s just so giving.”

Big Harry, as Williams calls him, acted when asked about it all Thursday as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The Mater Dei High product had come to Southern California from Australia when he was 15 years old, all alone, he explained. Alone. Los Angeles was a big jump, he explained. “Whatever the guys needed,” he added.

He had taken on the challenge, as Claude described, of being the leader of a completely new group, some of whom – by virtue of being upperclassmen transfers – are just the same age as him. But Hornery came back to USC, too, not to simply mentor. These Trojans are built for small ball, importing just two semi-traditional big men in Cohen and Bowling Green transfer Rashaun Agee, and Hornery will be a vital piece of the group as a rebounder and floor-spacer.

“The goal is definitely to take a leap,” Hornery said Thursday. “I’m not just here to be here.”

“I’m here to play.”

His impact, Cohen said, had gone beyond simply showing guys around, Hornery’s versatility standing out in the summer months. It was his “first real chance,” Cohen put it, to truly contribute, a key member of the roster in every possible sense.

“I wouldn’t say Harry’s just loaning shoes,” Cohen said. “I think he’s going to help us out this year a lot more than that.”

Notice outside of FlaSt-Fla, all the football games are conference rivalries. USC-ND is the greatest OOC rivalry and comes in 5th overall in the polls I’ve seen.

I wonder who Stewart Mandel has on his shortlist of greatest college rivalry games if USC/ND is ‘not remotely’ on his short list.

Speaking as an Illini of 72…….what an insult…….LOL……most who attend Illinois have no idea a trophy exists……where do they store that darn thing……at the local McDonalds?……Northwestern is considered by most the BIG schools as a bye week…..with the exception of maybe 4 years in the past 50. Of course academically…..wow!

I believe the Illini have only had a couple of great players that I think I recall: Dick Butkus and Red Grange (?)

OK,,,,,but…..if someone were to launch a full scale attack on LR it should not be based on a few words he mumbled about ND vs USC. The world changes constantly and US is faced with regular excessive travel and multiple matchups each year against teams ranked in the top 20. ND needs us more than we need ND. Is this a statement of choice….no…..frankly I can see it either way and I understand why LR opened the conversation. Hopefully it ends up with a retention of ND but making sure our travel there is bonded to the same year as… Read more »

LR is not the sole arbiter of USC football schedule. LR talks with Jen Cohen. Jen Cohen in consultation now with the Big10 commissioner and the Big10 scheduling staff set the schedule. I’m sure the commissioner discusses the OOC games with each school. I wouldn’t be surprised if this talk of USC cancelling ND is a ploy by USC, maybe in concert with the Big10. They want the ND game but within the first 6 weeks of the season. The Big10 also wants ND to join the Big. Keeping USC-ND keeps the Big10 in the conversation with ND to join.… Read more »

Somebody somewhere realized we had scheduled a really tough OOC because we also happened to miss Iowa and of the power 4 in the BIG we play the two weak sisters this year. Either way it is a challenging schedule but not the mission impossible some seem to think.

Can’t wait! So many variables this year for both teams. Just seeing if Miller was a flash or the real thing will be eye opening…..and very meaningful. IMO after the LSU game a lot of things will be so much clearer……including our coaching situation. Even if we lose but give them a good game it will help. LSU looks to be severely underrated this year. Their OL is really good, 2 NFL tackles, at least 1 NFL guard. The QB, who everybody thinks is inexperienced, played in their bowl game last year and produced 395 yards, 3TD’s and completed 69%.… Read more »

All great points. I would love to read, if I live long enough, Caleb’s book about his time at USC in 20 years. Something was going on……..what a mystery.

Allen, We are on the same page. I see it exactly as you have outlined. I find it interesting that Joel Klatt is the first national media guy to agree with this view of SC. I saw that Plascke went along the standard view of LR. I am going to the LSU game. I think it is going to be a barn burner. Two great HCs and both LSU and SC having totally rebuilt defensive staffs (LSU fired their entire 2023 D staff; SC kept only Nua) and both breaking in new QBs after losing Heisman winners. Really looking forward… Read more »

There are non lethal (to bees) sprays that are essentially oils l,the oil coats the leaves which suffocates the bugs. Also lady bugs and mantis are good non poison alternatives. Finally in the evening I go out and turn my nozzle on to a shower and spray directly on the leaves and underneath. Pick any leaf with white webbing underneath.

Yeah I have tried different methods and resorted to just high pressure spray leaf by leaf. Tedious but works. Ivory dish soap in a sprayer works well but you have to get at the under side where those little SOBs hide out!

The comments I have read from players on defense sure point towards some big changes on the USC defense. Lynn really seems to have changed things in a great way, one player saying “Why couldn’t we make these adjustments last year” says a lot about the way things are going. Of course we will know what we have in a couple of weeks, but for today the hype is really positive. Lots of sunshine going on.

I’d love to see us get Aaron Dunn. That would be great…..2 top O-Linemen in one week. What worries me is that between now and thursday(or whenever he commits) Oregon will call him up and offer him the brinks truck and he will go to the ducks. It has happened before.

Wasn’t the McKay Center originally built as a football facility? Now football has to share space with other sports. Good to see football is getting its own building. Football is such a large operation and generates most of the sports revenue, hope they keep it football only.
