USC fraternity brothers swipe a large stuffed bear known as Joe Bruin from the foyer of the Bruin Theatre in Westwood before the crosstown rivalry football game in 1952, won by USC 14-12.Â

Funny thing about sports viewing-and-retention is what we remember and recall– how many sports maniacs could recount even 50 college football games in their lifetime? I don’t remember any of the Carroll wipe-out games except sucla emptying the bench to fight the SC bench when Carroll got a meaningless and ‘bush’ touchdown at the end.(dose sucla bums tried to pull off the same stunt in the Rose Bowl one year). No, the games we recall if at all are the ‘David slay the Giant’ contests, or big games not decided until the finish. Give me a little drama in a… Read more »
I loved those Carroll wipe out games. Rolling over everybody. Great plays on offense and defense. Hope we get back to that in my lifetime. I was there for 50-0 in 2011, a perfect game but you are right, don’t remember much. I was there in 2009, SC up 21-7 with less than a minute, Barkley takes a knee to end it, Neuheisel calls a time out, Barkley heaves a long TD, the benches clear, Coliseum crowd chanting WE… ARE…SC! It was Neuheisel that brought that last TD by calling time out. The final drive at South Bend ending in… Read more »
I fully loved, and well remember 66-19 in ’05 and don’t need the drama of a close game to completely enjoy slaughtering UCLA in football anytime. I loved 27-0 too which got Pete started off correctly in ’01 at home before blowing the LV Bowl against UTAH. I also loved it when Pete beat ND 44-13, 45-14, and 41-10 three years in a row before the Bush Push game. Then he beat the Irish 44-24, 38-0 and 38-3, just to rub it in. The 50-0 stampede against strangely all-white UCLA in ’11 was another personal highlight for me, as well… Read more »
Confucius say, or was it Buddha, that give a man enough rope and he will hang himself. Or was it, ‘no accounting for tastes?’
John, I am with Golden. I really enjoyed the Carroll era home games, which uniformly were over by the end of the third quarter. The team with BMW on it was my favorite. He was more dominant that Drake London, and he did it on a team of superstars. Drake London stood out so clearly because he was the entire offense. Without London, I think this SC team would have won at most 2 games instead of the four it has. To be honest, I really miss those years and the great times at the Coliseum. I know they will… Read more »
I had forgotten just how good giant BMW really was. Unfortunately, he tried to declare for the NFL Draft after only two years at USC, hired an agent, and lost any further college eligibility. He had to sit out the 2004 season, couldn’t practice at USC either, and never made much of an impact in a short NFL career with four teams, only scoring 5 TDs from ’05-’11. Wiki — “In his final season, as a sophomore, Williams started all 13 games at wide receiver, and led the Trojans in receiving yards and touchdowns which resulted in 95 catches leading… Read more »
Why fucla is not a double digit favorite this weekend is baffling. I expect them to run fro about 300 yards and win quite easily. It pains me to say it, but I don’t think SC, without London, has a legitimate chance to win. Hope I’m wrong, but doubt it.
I agree. Without Drake London, USC is a pipsqueak team, sorry to say. Hope I am wrong as well, but a lot better USC teams have lost to UCLA than this one.
Good news, UCLA stinks too. This year we just stink more. A real pillow fight this year.
Only 36,574 fans reportedly were at the Rose Bowl watching UCLA easily handle CU last weekend.
There were no fans allowed at the Rose Bowl last year when USC edged UCLA 43-38.
I’m wondering how many fans will actually be at the Coliseum at 1 pm on Saturday to watch this year’s “pillow fight”?
If they reported 36,000, the actual number was probably under 30,000. TX high school football draws more than that!
Any prediction on the announced USC/UCLA (Terry Donahue always insisted on calling it UCLA/USC) game attendance this Saturday?
I can just imagine what would the upshot of a this prank would be If it happened today. Starting with the disbanding of the group pulling it off to the counseling of the poor Ucla students affected by such a dastardly deed. Police reports and apologies from Trojan administration would be followed by expulsion of the students responsible if this happened today. The Bruins box their best and Tommy Trojan is duct taped of late, but pranks have become fewer and far between. I loved the card stunt with the Trojans popping into the corner of each picture. We currently… Read more »
Different world. Except one thing doesn’t change, and that would be bragging rights. With extreme social media, those are much different too, however.
Maybe Pat Haden would say, “We promise to try to win the right way in the future.”
Poor Haden really went off the deep end as the USC AD, and that was long before.he became the King of the Tarmac.
I’ll never forget Haden coming out of the booth at a game in Palo Alto and arguing with the refs on the field of play. Not only did Haden show up his coach (Sark) but also he disgraced the University. I was totally embarrassed by that move and thought he should have been fired ASAP after it. Not too many remember he had a fake “foundation” on the side to get his kid(s) into USC. He was a great player but a horrible AD and an arrogant person.
Five-star CB Domani Jackson from Mater Dei has decommitted from USC. “I’m still considering USC and will be taking my official visit there this weekend for the UCLA game,” Jackson told 247Sports. “I just felt like the best way to really evaluate all my options was to de-commit so every one would be on the same level. “This is something that has been weighing on me for a while now. Even my mom mentioned recently that it seemed like I was a little down or not as happy. It’s been stressful for sure because of how strong my relationships are… Read more »
Anyone paying attention knew that was coming. I think the new coach will be able to put together an OK class, but not pull 5 star guys. It’s too tough a task with only a few weeks in the current world of recruiting.
Down goes Jimmy Lake. Another large program in head coach search mode. They would be crazy to not reach out to Chris Peterson.
“On Saturday, the Seattle Times, citing five anonymous players, reported that Jimmy Lake faced another allegation that he was physical with a player during halftime of a game against Arizona in 2019.
“Despite his previous reputation as one of the best recruiters in the country, recruiting has been dismal under Lake’s watch. The Huskies are not ranked in the top 40 of ESPN’s recruiting class rankings and are ranked No. 54 nationally by 247Sports…”

Sounds like a guy that needs a head coach to control his behavior. Some people can’t handle the added responsibility. Well at least he knows his limitations.
Lake, 44, Becomes Tragic Figure in Husky Football Annals, Dismissed for Missteps The Washington coach is the first to be removed from his job and not allowed to finish the season. Dan Raley (SI.com) — “Other football coaches have been fired from the UW, Jim Lambright because his program had stagnated in 1998 and the athletic director gave in to donors’ wishes, Rick Neuheisel in 2002 for participating in an office gambling pool, Keith Gilbertson in 2004 for going 1-10 and Tyrone Willingham for sinking even lower with the school’s only winless season in modern times. “Lake is owed $10… Read more »
sucla favored by about 2 1/2 points over SC according to the “experts” in ‘Vegas. Doesn’t sound like lottery odds, and yet most Trojan fans have already thrown in the towel. I am glad the players are playing the game, and not the SC fans.
So you give the home team 3, that means they originally saw sucla as a 5.5 point favorite, right?
Did that guy mean to write ‘quagmire?’
1952l Before my time, thank goodness. And look at those haircuts.
The ups-and-downs of college football teams make it interesting for fans, and a guagmire for coaches, who are inherently nervous-wrecks anyway. Of course, if a college was willing to pay me $5 million for a year of work, I would give it a whirl.
Me too. I honestly think I might do better than Clay. Pretty difficult to be worse.
