USC lineman Bear Alexander is pushing to become the Big Ten star the Trojans need
Ryan Kartje (LA Times) — Eric Henderson barely had settled into his office at USC before Bear Alexander appeared in the new defensive line coach’s doorway.
“He was one of the first people I laid eyes on,” said Henderson, who traded the NFL’s Rams for the Trojans in January.
Henderson already had an inkling of what USC’s top defensive lineman could do. He’d kept tabs on some top defensive line prospects while on the Rams staff, and Alexander, a 315-pound human wrecking ball and former five-star recruit, had caught his attention.
Alexander’s first year at USC, after transferring from Georgia, had been filled with flashes of ferocious, unblockable brilliance. But those flashes of greatness often faded into prolonged uneven stretches, and Alexander finished with just 1½ sacks and 6½ tackles for loss.
“He’s shown that he’s got the ability to be an explosive player, but he’s also been a player that his inconsistencies have hurt us, like any player’s inconsistencies are going to hurt you,” USC coach Lincoln Riley said last week. “So whether it’s effort all the time, whether it’s being in the correct gap, playing blocks the way we want to play them and aligning correctly, I feel like all those little things [are] where you step up from being a guy that flashes to a guy what I’d truly term a great player.”
USC needs more from its star defensive tackle, if it hopes to hold up in the Big Ten. Henderson knew that much when he took the job. Yet as concerns swirled about his effort, here was Alexander at his new coach’s door, asking questions, eager to learn. He came back again. And again. Motivation, Henderson figured, didn’t appear to be the problem.
“I can’t get him out of my office,” Henderson said. “He’s a guy that’s been thirsting for knowledge. You love that. Any time you have guys like that, you want him to have success.”
And Henderson understood, better than most, what that would take with Alexander. Not only did Henderson have a track record training top linemen such as future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald, but he could relate on a deeper level with Alexander, through hardships they both endured in their upbringings.
Soon after Alexander started showing up at his office, Henderson started opening up to Alexander about his own path and those obstacles he’d overcome. Henderson tried to show each of his defensive linemen his vulnerable side — to give them a piece of himself, in hopes they’d offer up part of themselves in return.
It was the only way he knew how to coach, Henderson said. To Alexander, it meant a lot to connect on that level.
“I really can relate to Coach Henny, his story,” Alexander said. “We shared with each other, where he’s from, where I’m from.”
A strong relationship was forged from those meetings in Henderson’s office, but it wasn’t long before their bond would be tested. In April, with spring practice underway, Alexander told USC coaches he intended to enter the transfer portal.
Henderson and his NFL pedigree would play a critical role in convincing Alexander not to leave.
“He didn’t. So we’re glad he’s still here,” Henderson said. “We do not want to relive whatever that was at that time.”
Henderson didn’t have much chance to work with Alexander in the spring, as the defensive tackle sat out most of April because of a nagging hamstring injury. The injury left him behind in picking up USC’s new defensive scheme and understanding his role in it.
So through the summer, Alexander spent as much time as he could with Henderson, “going over the ins and the outs of the game, what’s good, what’s bad, making sure we’re putting everything on the table,” Alexander said. Out of those sessions, he came away with at least some understanding of what was holding him back. He spent time with Henderson learning defense on a deeper level. He tried to focus on finishing plays and keeping up his energy through an entire game.
He didn’t want to be the guy who just flashed anymore.
“No flashing,” Alexander said. “Just being a consistent player, making sure I’m well-rounded in all areas … just making sure my motor is at the top so other guys’ motors are as well.”
USC’s defensive front might go only as far as that motor can take it. There’s not much in the way of proven depth behind Alexander, outside of experienced transfers like Nate Clifton (Vanderbilt) and Gavin Meyer (Wyoming). Last week, when asked how important it is for USC that Alexander become a more consistent force along the defensive front, Riley didn’t mince words.
“It’s real important,” Riley said. “We need him to take more steps in that direction, and I think he’s got great intent to do it. But this stretch for him is going to be very, very important.”
There are signs that Alexander is heeding that call. Starting with a newfound focus, he said, on “making sure I’m constantly a vocal leader” and mentor for USC’s freshman defensive linemen, two roles he’d never shown much interest in before.
Henderson has witnessed that shift firsthand, manifested over summer meetings in his office. But he knows better than most that Alexander still has a distance to go before he scrapes his ceiling.
“He continues to get better,” Henderson said. But, he added, “we’re nowhere near where we want to be obviously.”

Just came back from a trip to Vegas. Nary a single piece of merch for the game seen anywhere on the strip or in sporting/memorabilia stores. When I inquired as to why not told that LV is not a college sports town. Sad. Probably there will be things for sale at the stadium on game day.

Section 140, Row 14, Seat 15 – Fight On ✌
Looks like the Transfer Portal worked out well for Malachi Nelson. NOT! He has moved up from 3rd string QB at USC to backup at Boise St! Guess he’s too busy figuring out how to spend all that High School NIL than work on football.
The old grass isn’t greener story comes home to roost again.
As far as the grass being greener, I got the impression that the grass had simply already turned brown for Malachi at USC by the time he split.
He was going nowhere during his early, very short stint at USC. So Malachi got the message and left.
You wouldn’t glean that from what LR or any other Trojan reps have ever said (nor will you ever), but that’s what I think for what it’s worth
The grass looks greener cause you can’t see the dog doo from your side of the fence!🐕😃
It is so obvious that the last two seasons of Grinchified defense caused our players to regress. God, what a waste! I hope our new defensive coaches can develop our players, because the previous idjits surely did not do this important task of player development.
It sure must have been hard to play consistently all game in a dysfunctional Grinch defense. Bear and the rest got to feel like it’s night and day compared to a year ago.
Pretty sure Auburn and Alabama are switched.
How could FinneyButt let that oversight happen?
I wouldn’t want to be the coach to follow Saban, no matter how good I was. Possible nightmare existence.
Sorry, who is Top Tier? Must be SEC homers. Looks like they want the SEC to take 6 of the 8 available playoff spots?

Thanks
Who would have ever thought Sark and Kiffin would be coaching top SEC teams as a result of the Saban Rehab program?
No one ever … it will not last. Those two are the biggest frauds in coaching.
Looking over Bama schedule they could go 12-1 or 11-2 regular season. I like C.Deboer and his amazing O. They play UGA early and it’s 50/50 type game. I think U.GA will have a difficult time with C.Deboer O. Also, there’s a good chance for an upset loss for Bama. It’s so hard to go un-defeated especially in the SEC. I predict Bama loses a very close game with UGA and lose another game = 11-2 regular season. Bama will make the 12 teams CFP. I’m a big fan of C.Deboer and think he is a class act (never… Read more »
Sometimes, guys who win big with average players aren’t as successful with the big shots with more talent at big brand programs. Lots of different dynamics come into play in these situations.
I wish DeBoer the best. I still wouldn’t want to follow the most successful CFB coach of all time, just for the sake of my own sanity.
No matter what he does, it will be scrutinized versus Saban. That will wear on any man no matter how much confidence he has in himself. It’s like a no win situation even when you win. He is always going to hear, Saban would have done it differently. I wonder how long it will be before he entertains offers from the NFL?
Plus, Saban’s gonna be extremely visible as an ESPN College GameDay analyst every single week in front of the biggest games.
He’s already shown he’s strongly insightful and an unexpectedly humorous (when he wants) talking head when he did NFL Draft stuff.
It’ll be interesting to hear whatever he has to say about his old stomping grounds.
No matter what he says on TV, it’s what he’s thinking inside. He’s too honorable & decent to openly criticize another HC publically. He has a deadpan delivery in being funny.
I think Saban also likes to be honest. Blending brutal honesty with artful, yet deserved criticism isn’t always easy.
How Saban evolves on TV is something I’m looking forward to seeing. I think it was a real coup for a somewhat faltering, stale GameDay show to land him.
Oh Saban will destroy Goatboy Kiffy if he gets the chance
They actually have great respect for each other.
Here’s Lane pointing Saban to the hip replacement section.
no one respects Goatboy Kiffy … he even hates himself
Kiffin and Sark both live in your head 24/7. Some things never change.
No kiddin’, what did Kiffin ever do to 1988?
We’ll never know. It must have been something awful. 😂 😂
GameDay focus will be on Herbstreets F ing dog … that has gotten old real quick
Bruddah, I think I see your points about the tuff situation for a coach taking over for the great C.Saban. For 99% of all the HC’s yes you’re right. But, I think C.Deboer is top 3 HC in da country and the right man for Bama’s FB program post C.Saban. He is and always has been a winner where ever he has coached. Hell, he has big balls for taking the job. But, C.Saban highly recommended C.Deboer to Bama’s board and AD. Just as you are a fan of Lanning & Oregon, it’s the same for me and C.Deboer. As you know, C.Deboer beat… Read more »
DeBoer seems like a terrific coach, which I’m sure he is. Great record. But he hasn’t done diddly squat compared to Saban. Once he wins 2-3 NCs at ALA, he can call himself a “great coach.” Until then, he’s only proven he was good enough to get the ALA job, which is definitely saying something. Now he has to prove he can keep it, and satisfy that unforgiving ‘Bama fan base. Beating GA on Sept. 28 in Tuscaloosa would be a good start. Until that happens, DeBoer has only proven he still has a long way to go. If Lanning… Read more »
To add, when it was known dat C.Doboer was da next HC at Bama, there were a mass player exodus. He had to work quickly salvaging the roster by convincing some players to come back and dove into the TP. He did a very good job. Many pundits slammed him as a 3* player type coach and has no business recruiting the 5*/4* players for Bama. Hell, he made all those folks look foolish; he is ripping it up in the 2025 class and has Bama at #2 in recruiting and could end up #1 in da final rankings. HS players and parents like… Read more »
We’ll see if DeBoer beats #1 GA in Tuscaloosa right off the bat.
Sounds like you’re already trying to give him an excuse to lose.
Then he’s got to beat #15 TENN in Knoxville, #13 LSU in Baton Rouge and #16 OU in Norman. We’ll see how he does on the field, where it counts.
And by the way, it’s not hard to recruit 4/5-star players to ALA. It’s just not, especially when Saban laid such a rock-hard foundation. But recruiting rankings only take you so far.
Brah, I’m not giving an excuse for C.Deboer to lose da UGA game? Where’s dat coming from? I said it’s gonna be 50/50. C.Deboer O will give C.Smart, UGA many problems. UGA is in my book the #1 team in country. Hell, I’m giving C.Deboer a 50/50 chance in beating UGA. I responded to the SEC prediction where it listed Bama 7-5 record. Bad prediction. I stand by my thought Bama will be either 12-1 or 11-2. It was not going to be easy recruiting players to Bama post C.Saban. Saban is gone, what he laid out is no more.… Read more »
Since ALA gets GA at home and is coming directly off the Saban dynasty, there’s no reason why DeBoer shouldn’t win that game, especially if he’s as good as you say he is. But legend replacement coaches rarely get off so easy. Since he hasn’t won even a single game at ALA, where the pressure will be vastly greater in a much tougher conference against superior competition, I’ll hold off on pronouncing DeBoer one of the top three CFB coaches alive. Who are your other two? DeBoer will have to win huge at ALA for me to jump on his… Read more »
A.Wallace, I hope GA kicks their butt. Sorry about that. Hah, we’ll see about dat. UGA will not kick Bama’s butt. UGA wins a close game. And, maybe Bama pulls da upset. I could tell you’re not a Bama fan. Heck, I was not one either. But, since I’m a C.Deboer fan, I guess I’m a quasi Bama fan now. As for C.Deboer coaching reputation, look over what he’s done at everywhere he has coached (winning records) and you’re not impressed? Hah, he beat your boy. C.Lanning and Oregon twice last year. Most of all C.Saban recommended C.Deboer for his… Read more »
Please don’t misquote me or put words in my mouth.
I never said I wasn’t impressed by DeBoer.
Here’s what I said about DeBoer — “DeBoer seems like a terrific coach, which I’m sure he is. Great record.”
I sure hope Bear makes it close to his ceiling real fast, especially if he wants this to be his last year in college ball.
