USC anticipates Miller Moss vs. Jayden Maiava QB battle
‘We wanted someone that wanted to come compete here,’ says Lincoln Riley of the UNLV transfer challenging Moss
Luca Evans (OC Register) — LOS ANGELES — Miller Moss has mostly night classes this semester, which fortunately makes it easier to shield his face around USC’s campus, the crown now perched upon his golden hair.
Around USC’s Howard Jones Field, though, Miller has strutted with the same chest-forward air he carried in December, assuming the starting quarterback job for the Holiday Bowl and promptly asserting his claim on USC’s 2024 program with a six-touchdown performance.
“Excited to see, kinda, what a team looks like when I’m able to really put my DNA on it,” Moss said at USC’s first spring practice, speaking with media for the first time since the Holiday Bowl.
So, he was asked – what does a team look like with Miller Moss’ DNA?
He grinned, chuckling for a moment.
“I guess we’ll see,” he smiled. “Without wanting to give too much away – we’re still obviously going to see what that looks like – but really excited about the culture that’s coming together.”
Between the lines, Moss’ comments carried all the secrecy of a screen door.
Lincoln Riley hasn’t named USC’s starting quarterback for 2024, ever since the Holiday Bowl, ever since pursuing and securing UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava in the transfer portal. Last Monday, the coach declined to say whether he’d name a starter by the end of the spring. Moss’ performance, though, warded off any idea that USC might bring in a veteran transfer to compete for the job, instead turning to Maiava in search of a young option with some real-game experience.
But Maiava came to USC to battle. And Riley wanted that – clearly not happy with simply handing the job to Moss on a silver platter.
“We wanted someone, at the end of the day, that wanted to come compete here, and believed in himself to come compete,” Riley said Tuesday of Maiava.
After a freshman season throwing for 3,085 yards and 17 touchdowns, Maiava dealt with a hectic transfer-portal recruitment. He seemingly committed to Georgia, his father William convinced he should attend Georgia after visiting both schools – only for Maiava to wake up the next morning and flip to USC.
“It’s just, I wanted to play under Coach Riley,” Maiava said after Tuesday’s spring practice.
His transition to USC, Maiava said in his first time speaking to media Tuesday, had involved “tough times here and there.” Natural, for a program that’s followed three-year veteran Moss for months, returning receiver Kyron Hudson openly calling for him to earn the starting job after the Holiday Bowl. The transfer quarterback’s new teammates are still clearly getting a read on him, all positive when asked about him through USC’s first three spring practices, but expounding little with little to say.
“Amazing,” returning tackle Elijah Paige said of Maiava. “Quiet guy, just puts his head down and works.”
He was soft-spoken Tuesday, too, speaking with excitement but steering largely clear of questions involving his decision-making in the transfer portal. And Maiava’s ability to earn teammates’ trust this spring will be crucial to challenging Moss for the starting job.
“I mean, this is SC, you’re going to have dogs all over the place,” Maiava said Tuesday, when asked about his view of USC’s wide receivers. “Not just in the receivers room, but the line, the D-line, the offensive line, everybody around. So, I mean, already knew what I had. I just had to bring myself here and go ball out with them.”
And Moss and Maiava have been complementary of one another, in limited experience. But Moss, when asked last week, said he didn’t have “a huge reaction either way” when learning of Maiava’s transfer. And for the time being, the job looks as much Moss’ to lose as it does a simple competition.
“As I’ve said before, my job is to help us win as many games as we can, so,” Moss said last Monday. “That’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

On 3/16, just a mere 11 days ago, I popped this headline onto the TDB. “Where Does Disappointing USC Basketball Go From Here?” I must admit, I never thought Andy Enfield would actually be on his way out this soon, if at all, let alone find himself hotly pursued by completely unremarkable SMU, thereby wiping off USC’s substantial financial obligations. In some far-off way, this reminds me of USC latching onto Seven Win Sark, as he was known in the days when Pat Haden lost out on Chris Petersen, did a quick redirect up north and in the process rescued… Read more »
I didn’t think Andy Enfield would be on his way out, either. Unfortunately, he was like Clay Helton in that he recruited well, was a nice guy, but his teams couldn’t perform. Except for the year when both the Mobley brothers played, Mediocre is the word that comes to mind when thinking of USC Basketball. It is sad that the USC great Paul Westphal passed away a few years ago. Paul was always my choice for USC HC these past 3 decades as he not only was an All-American at USC, an NBA All Star with Phoenix, but a well… Read more »
It is hard to see this as anything other than a great opportunity for Men’s Basketball. Enfield has been a lesser version of Coach Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech. He always could recruit great players (difficult to do this at the MIT of the SouthEast), but the fortunes of his teams seemed to be tied to how good Cremins’ assistants were at helping Cremins strategize during games. When I first moved here going on 33 years ago, Georgia Tech was killing it in basketball. They haven’t had that great combo since cremins left GT, save for one coach that had… Read more »
I loved those Yellowjacket days! My older brother was in grad school at GA Tech. I’d go down and we’d go see them play. Mark Price, Bruce Darylrimple, John Salley….some great teams and fun to watch!
It looks like Enfield has officially taken the SMU job….
Brian Dutcher, 64, SDSU, or Mark Few, 61,Gonzaga, might be enticed. What they could do in LA compared to San Diego or Spokane with NIL. But both have been firmly entrenched at each school. Other than that USC would seem a great opportunity, somebody out of the ACC or Big East.
I’d take Dutcher for the job. Now that SDSU has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, it would be a good time for Jen Cohen to contact him. I’m sure it will take some bucks to get Dutcher to leave SDSU as he’s been an assistant coach and head coach there for several years. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Dutcher might be willing to move up to an only one of two Power conferences. It would be a good selection.
Enfield had only one bad year.
But we thank Andy for the good years. Especially the Mobley years.
Did anyone else read the house of victory update on NiL approach? Our collective can now contact high school kids as part of recruitment. We are now playing the same game as the others, and shocker…. We’re getting the 5Star guys.

Stewart Mandel on today’s free market in college athletics Question — Why are you so in favor of a free market for players but so against a free market for teams and conferences? The courts have spoken on both accounts Mandel (The Athletic) — I’m not against teams switching conferences. I don’t think Congress needs to step in and enact some nationwide ban on realignment. I just don’t see who benefited from this most recent round besides ESPN and Fox. College football did not benefit from the Pac-12 imploding or Stanford and Cal joining the ACC. Oregon and Washington may eventually be better… Read more »
USC women’s basketball NCAA Tournament game vs Kansas drew 1.8 million TV viewers on ESPN — even though it tipped off at 10 pm ET. Report: Enfield expected to leave USC to coach SMU Thomas Tittley (The Score) — USC head coach Andy Enfield is expected to sign a deal to become SMU’s bench boss, a source told Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68. But it might not be official until next week. Enfield has led the Trojans over the past 11 seasons. USC went 15-18 this campaign despite adding several top-100 recruits, including Bronny James and Isaiah Collier. Enfield came to Southern California after spending two seasons as Florida Gulf Coast’s head coach. He helped the Eagles earn a spot in the 2013 NCAA… Read more »
Seems a head scratcher to me. If I’m an SMU fan am I gonna be excited about Enfield? Do the Dallas Mavericks have some sons in high school that can play? Could be a gift for Cohen, no heavy buy out to let AE go. She can go find a Big10 BB coach and have a big budget to get him.
The women are doing quite well at USC

Possible ACC falling likely to lead to separation of SEC and Big Ten from NCAA Andrew Hughes (Fly War Eagle) — The future of the ACC, specifically the scenario of the conference not surviving, was predicted by Mike Farrell Sports’ Kyle Golik to be the beginning of the end for the NCAA as a whole; leading to the Big Ten and SEC eventually breaking off from the non-profit monolith. “What doomed the Pac-12 was not listening to the anchors of the conference,” Golik prefaced before saying, “The programs that brought in the lion’s share of the revenue. I just read something in the late edition of the newspaper I really hope college football doesn’t adopt. “The new NFL kickoff rules” are intended to bring kickoff returns back to the game. Some of the head scratchers include; Nine of the return team’s players and 10 of the kicking team’s players cannot move until the kicked ball hits one of the two receivers or the ground. As I read this nineteen of the twenty-one players on the play stand like statues. The kicking team must have five players on either side of the ball )standing like statues. If the… Read more »
Is Endfield pulling a Chip Kelly? He had a ton of talent on his team, but couldn’t lead. Now he’s getting out of dodge before the torch carrying mob comes after him. I don’t know whether to cheer or boo.
Kelly messed with UCLA bad. He didn’t want to recruit. He didn’t want to glad hand with important people. He doesn’t like NIL. He just wanted to stay in his head with calling plays in his secret laboratory. Easy to see why he failed, and took an easy-for-him gig at OHIO ST, where he won’t need to recruit. So much less pressure at a place that already has all their wheels greased. For extra measure, Kelly delayed leaving until UCLA was even in a worse hiring position. I don’t honestly know much about Andy Enfield really. I’m not sure what… Read more »
Two things: Chip Kelly will have to succeed at Ohio St. Football is a religion there so be careful what you ask for as HC Ryan Day is already on the hot seat and won’t show much support if one of his staff isn’t cutting it. And, it wouldn’t surprise me if Jen has already told Enfield to look for another gig so she doesn’t have to pull the plug on him. Trojan men’s BB is the ugly duckling in the USC sports program right now as Andy has shown he doesn’t have the ability to handle the challenges facing… Read more »
Ryan Day has been saved because Jim Harbaugh, who started to totally own OHIO ST in a big-time way, split for the Chargers. Harbaugh led MICH to two wins in 2021 and 2022, outscoring the Buckeyes 87-50. MICH beat the Bucks again last Nov, 30-24, and went on to win the NC.
You’re right Allen. So if say Oregon or Penn St. etc. wins the conference championship, that really puts doubt in those minds that Day has run his course?
My thinking there is that PSU never scares me with James Franklin as their coach. They’re always the bridesmaid, if that. As far as ORE goes, they have a clear tendency to lose coaches who do well. They’ve capitalized on USC’s post-Bush weakness, yet have still never won even a single NC. Fortunately, the Ducks always seem to stumble at important times. Also, now that USC has its act together with a much stronger NIL program, and Riley has learned he has to play good D (among other improvements), and admirably hired the coaches to do so, I think ORE’s… Read more »
The difference between this defensive staff and what we had with grinch and co is night and day. All momentum is now with us. I expect multiple huge spring portal pickups.
You are so right Chris, I am just nervous about how long LR can hold this defensive staff together.
Vote For JuJu and Lindsay
I went to McKay’s last night, just down the street from Galen, for some tasty pre-game tacos.
Matt Leinart was in there, looking very tall and fit. The stars come out when the Lady Trojans play!
This is an exhilarating time in USC athletics. Lincoln Riley is smack in the middle of drastically rebuilding USC football after a disarmingly bad year, followed by his welcomed personal redirection of coaching focus, plus his encouraging hiring of numerous unquestionably superior coaches amidst our historic move to the more physical B1G. Lindsay Gottlieb has quickly redirected USC women’s hoops to the precipice of a possible Final Four appearance with a combination of remarkable “nerd transfers” and JuJu Watkins who have filled often ignored Galen Center like never before. Andy Enfield could possibly be leaving USC per nationwide reports with… Read more »
I’m hoping she doesn’t try to match the SMU offer to keep Enfield. I would think she can do better than Enfield. She can enlist Gottlieb’s help to show a big time coach that USC can walk and chew gum, be a football and basketball school.
Meet Clarice Akunwafo, future surgeon and USC’s defensive hero in NCAA tournament Thuc Nhi Nguyen (LAT) — Not only was the 6-foot-6 center a defensive trump card that stymied Kansas in an NCAA tournament second-round victory that sent USC to its first Sweet 16 since 1994, but the Inglewood native is also helping the Trojans establish themselves as a national championship contender while pursuing a career in medicine. She hopes to become a surgeon after basketball. “Lindsay always supports my dream to be a doctor, that’s why I really stayed,” Akunwafo said. “She supports me and I’m going to support… Read more »
USC basketball head coach Andy Enfield is reportedly leaving USC and taking the job as the SMU basketball head coach
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported earlier on Tuesday that Enfield had emerged as a “person of interest” for the SMU job. Later in the day, Rodney Peete of AM 570 LA Sports said that Enfield is leaving for SMU. Neither the school nor the program has confirmed the news yet.

If Andy leaves it will be good for SMU and USC both. It is time to look forward in a different direction, a new coach will be a great change. Lets get Lindsey!
I’m with you Steveg. Andy has been a mystery to me. He’s a good recruiter but his in-game coaching is not very good. Mediocre at best. Andy was one of the best career NCAA free throwers when he was at Johns Hopkins University in the early 1990s. His career mark was a little over 90% which is outstanding. He couldn’t teach his team what he did best. USC has been poor at the free throw line under Enfield which boggles my mind. If he’s off to SMU, then I wish him well. Like you said, it is time for USC… Read more »
