Caleb Williams dazzles as No. 8 USC holds off Colorado
Trojans QB throws for 403 yards and 6 TDs in a 48-41 win overshadowed by the Buffs scoring the last 20 points
Luca Evans (OC Register) — BOULDER, Colorado — Three hours before game time, the overflow lots had long overflown, and USC’s clash in Prime Time was underway.
Pandemonium dawned, with the pink-tinged crest of sun over Colorado morning ridges, staffers and vendors who presumed they’d be getting a head start having to resort to parking cars in grassy areas. Guttural screams and shouts of no language, from Boulder youth presumably off wee hours of sleep and various beverages, echoed through closed-off streets and brick buildings. A small group of CU students, sporting wide white bucket-hats as disciples of Boulder’s salvation, strolled outside Folsom Field holding a sign that advertised the sale of $5 cowboy hats “for charity.”
One by one, celebrities A- through D-list emerged on Colorado’s sidelines pregame. And the clamor grew from an ever-growing sellout sea of Buffs white. There was “All-American’s” Da Vinchi, and former MLB pitcher CC Sabathia, and former NBA stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett taking selfie videos. Moths, all, to the Deion Sanders flame that has burned so brightly throughout Boulder.
“Coach Prime brings a energy to Boulder, and to Colorado football,” Colorado Rep. Leslie Harod said, “that we just haven’t seen at the collegiate level.”
For a half Saturday, at least, it seemed as if USC would trample that flame, same as Oregon had in a statement blowout last week. For a half, at least, USC matched that statement, Caleb Williams throwing four first-half touchdowns and the Trojans’ secondary surprisingly stifling Buffs quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
And then USC’s defense folded under a stunning second-half Colorado surge in which Sanders couldn’t be stopped, the Trojans wriggling their way out of Boulder with a 48-41 win in which time simply ran out on the Buffs.
It’s been the same sentiment for the Trojans, amid any defensive inconsistency in a 5-0 start. They’ll fix it. They’ll go back and watch the film. But before long, beware a Trojan-that-cried-wolf situation – with the second half at Colorado on Saturday a compounding of everything that’d gone wrong across the four games previous.
It started before the break, Sanders running right through the heart of USC’s defense unscathed for a 25-yard touchdown. It continued into the third quarter, cornerbacks Domani Jackson whiffing on a tackle and Prophet Brown getting beat in a one-on-one to set up respective touchdowns. It boiled over in the fourth, when Sanders simply shredded the Trojans’ secondary like paper on a 10-play, 78-yard touchdown drive that cut USC’s lead to a single touchdown.
By the time Williams mercifully took a knee to run out the clock, his six touchdown passes in three quarters had somehow been overshadowed by 564 yards of total offense for Colorado, the highest the Trojans have surrendered since Alex Grinch took over as defensive coordinator.
The blame, naturally, will fall on Grinch’s shoulders. Riley insisted postgame that, “to the trained eye,” the same issues from last season weren’t popping up – but despite an overhauled roster and clearly improved defensive line, USC’s general issues Saturday with tackling and inconsistent pass coverage were the same that plagued the Trojans in 2022.
Did he still have trust in Grinch to orchestrate a defensive turnaround, Riley was asked postgame?
“Yes I do,” he answered matter-of-factly.
And Shaw, for one, gave an unprompted and fiery defense of Grinch, an admiring display of accountability in sticking up for a coach who’s drawn nothing but raves from his former players and coaches at previous stops.
“Coach Grinch, he’s doing a great job – we’re letting him down,” Shaw said. “That’s point blank, period. I don’t know what to tell y’all – as players, we’re letting him down. He’s putting us in the right spots. We’re not making plays, we’re missing tackles, we’re not doing our job, I’m not doing my job.”
To restate in the midst of all this, Williams threw six touchdowns Saturday to tie a career-best. It was perhaps the best performance of a five-game start in which he’s been close to flawless, outdueling Sanders long enough to give USC the win.
“People definitely take what he does for granted,” USC receiver Brenden Rice said, “and it won’t be until he leaves that people will really realize the greatness that they’re watching.”
And at the end of the year, Riley said postgame, people would look back and simply see Saturday’s game as a win.
A win, sure. But also the amalgamation of alarm bells continuing to sound that, if left unchecked, could doom these Trojans’ future.

Explain how Oregon St is better than SC?!? That is completely inexcusable!!! You have a top 5 offense and Oregon St has a better defense…lol What a complete joke!!!
I would say that last night is the biggest slap in the face to Riley so far!!!! Despite Caleb’s performance. Bottomline you can’t ask your QB and offense to bail you out of every game period!!! The more you ask your offense and QB to do that the more you can expect Caleb to have a poor performances. Riley lost last night because he got out recruited on the defensive side of the ball!!! We won last year, and they manhandled us this year!! Grinch is Pathetic!!! I wanna move to the Big-10 because of $$$$ and getting to a… Read more »
The Big 10 was fair regarding scheduling … sounded as if SC had a lot of input, as they should
At the Big House is cool!
Tough slate next year with a newbie qb
Knowles OSU, Parker Iowa, or Minter Michigan. We are moving to the Big 10 so they might want to consider hiring someone of these guy’s who have coached top 10 defenses in college and can help Riley recruit other wise it’s gonna be the Grinch stoll Riley building championship caliber program!!!!!!!!!
Old Parker lol … sure if you want to stop bad teams and get drilled by any team with a pulse. Iowa is a fraud, every year.
Ahahahah you’re a fraud!!!!! The record is there to prove it with a sub-par offense year in an year out. Also they usually do very well rushing the ball too! Do you think that might be an important trait for USC, even-thou obviously receivers carry more value than RB’s that is still historically our juju!! So maybe Parker might have a little say in that especially because obviously if you are going to hire a DC you’re hiring someone that can recruit and has a name, and a culture. Iowa’s defense has always had a thumping culture!! That is also… Read more »
Let’s not be Iowa, aim higher. Those guys score less than soccer teams. They do play a style of offense that is complimentary to their defense, super slow. Even their 3 and outs take 4 minutes. get a first down or two and it’s 8 minute drive. Part of why the have top rated defenses.
they had 76 yards for the game against st Penn state. 76! Let’s not be Iowa.
Frankly, IOWA is one of the last programs I would want to be. Mired in mediocrity, the ability to beat low-hanging fruit, and always lucky to get to a bowl game anyone really cares about. Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes specialize in bowl appearances like the Holiday, Music City, Outback, Pinstripe, Insight, Taxslayer, etc. In the 2016 Rose Bowl, a rare elite postseason appearance, STAN beat up the Hawkeyes bad 45-16 when David Shaw still had a pulse. Ferentz did manage to humiliate Clay Helton in the 2019 Holiday Bowl, 49-24 even though the #22 ranked Trojans were favored by… Read more »
You are missing the entire point of the argument which is I’m hiring a Defensive Coordinator. I’m not hiring a Head Coach!!! If your trying to tell me that Iowa is that bad I’m going to call your bluff! Especially when you play in a conference with the likes of OSU, Michigan, PSU and Wisconsin and you still boast a top 10 defense a lot of time. Not to mention they carry a lot of other traits that SC is missing IE running the football! Secondly Culture on defense. I would hire any 3 DC’s available from the Big 10… Read more »
Hire some overrated old man that can’t stop any team with a pulse … ya Okay. Talk tough and get drubbed.
iowa plays shit teams and all at home to get their 8 wins … amateur hour
last 4 games vs the big boys, they rarely play Mich, OSU, PennSt
131 to 27
frauds!
Wow the Big 10 must be really shit teams if were moving there!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
I would respectfully say USC is moving there for the moola, and lots of it. $$$$$ There are plenty of crap teams in the B1G like there are everywhere else. JMHO.
Hopefully, someone will answer this question.
Is it legal in CFB for players to ingest power, energy gel packs while on the sideline during the game? Colorado players were given the gel packs by the folks with the Gatorade bottles.
Joel Klatt on Caleb Williams:
“He would probably upgrade 18 NFL teams next week”
I know he would upgrade my woeful Vikings.
The hosts of the Sunday morning ESPN college football review show on sirius XM were brutal about LR this morning. Called him out for arrogance thinking he can “out-offense” any opponent and defense is just an afterthought. They also pointed out that Riley has made 3 CFB playoffs and is 0 for 3.
Much truth in what they say. We are the same team as last year, but with a tougher 2023 schedule compared to last year’s. Better talent, but the same coaching flaws (Grinch and Riley) are holding back the players from reaching the team’s real potential.
So LR immed goes 16-3 to vault USC back into the national headlines positively for the first time in a long while, and brings Mr. Heisman Caleb Williams along with him. And now he’s crap?
Tough crowd.
LR and Grinch sure have their problems and aren’t anywhere near perfect. But I’ll take a 16-3 start, and a Heisman any day of the week and twice on Sundays. As RJJ said, USC has a very good team, and we might get even better. Perfection is the enemy of the good, for now at least. Fight On!
Definitely do not want LR going anywhere. But it is time for him to cut the dead weight at the end of the season (don’t think he will fire his friend during the season). Just can’t agree that the problems are not the same as Last year. One thing that hasn’t been brought up is how often opposing OC attack his aggressiveness and succeed. Either he has a “tell” from his formations or some other pattern. Either way he has much more talent this year but the same problem as last year.
LR’s under a huge microscope now and anchored with a horrible (not just bad) defense rep that he can’t fix this season unless a miracle occurs.
Grinch needs to have a complete brain transplant or be replaced at season’s end.
Hopefully, USC doesn’t lose ground with prospects who play D because they see USC as hopeless on that side of the ball because of coaching.
The ESPN guys compared Saban and Brian Kelley to Riley. Saban and Kelley have made major staff changes and/or changes to football style/philosophy when warranted to great success. Riley, they said, seems to be more stubborn to change what he does. He has earned his “horrible” defensive reputation from his time at OU and this season at SC. Last year can be chalked up to just okay starters an no depth on D. This season, no excuses on the talent for our D.
Kelley lol … how many playoff games has he won since that’s the measure now lol
Guys, try to avoid the falling into the Grinch narrative. Negativity always sells (which is why the above article is written the way it is). Look at the positives. First, we went 11-1 last year with a lousy D (and we got another lousy D this year). We are probably going 10-2 or 9-3 against the toughest schedule in the nation. Every top team in the nation would probably go 10-2 or 9-3 against this schedule. GA barely beat Auburn (and Cal, yes Cal, almost beat Auburn). Did you notice that LSU lost to Ole MIss 55-49. Ole Miss scored… Read more »
While everybody is watching the D, it is bad and not changing. The key to our success for the remainder of this year — with an upside that still may include an undefeated season and a national championship, is better O-line play. Think about it: We have the best QB in the country, the best receiving core in the country, and one of the best running backs in the country. We finally have a good tight-end. The only time we have stalled offensively is when our O-line has sagged later in games, and suddenly the running game isn’t working at… Read more »
Well done … yes, can we just enjoy a walk away win
What positives you have the top 5 offense in the nation, and you are not attracting the defensive recruits you need to be balanced. You cannot expect to blow teams out with just offense. Defense wins championships. SC’s football program is program historically of many defensive All American’s. Regardless of schedule and ranking’s we give up way too many points. We lost to Utah twice last year because of depth on Defense. Same thing with Oregon we are loosing the recruiting battle to Oregon defensively in our own backyard. SC got the best coach they could in Riley and now… Read more »
I cannot only blame the defense for the final score of yesterday’s game. The offense went to sleep too. In my opinion (which some wish I’d keep to myself) Colorado adjusted. It’s a problem that goes back to the Helton epoch and maybe back to Kiffin. USC just assumes they can keep on keeping on after halftime. Colorado didn’t suddenly get good, they adjusted. There were new fresh players getting a chance in the second half. There were new coverages in the second half. We were outplayed in the second half. After the first three and out, of the third… Read more »
After watching Notre Dame barely get by Duke last night, I’m more optimistic that SC can beat the Irish in South Bend in a few weeks. The real tough one will be at Oregon. Oregon’s Offense is very good and Defense is better than USC. That game could come down to special teams play. SC gets Utah and UW at home in the LA Coliseum.
DUKE gagged big-time vs the Irish. What a shame. All the Blue Devils had to do was stop Hartman on a 4th and 16 and the game is theirs.
But in the long run, the ND win may be better for USC as a ranking/playoff measure.
The alumni association boosters, is not going to allow Riley to not have a relevant defense. I fully agree that he is an offensive minded coach. It still does not take away from the fact that he is a top 5 coach in the nation, and after SC finally gets someone relevant then it’s time to cut the rope…lol. The problem is you need a DC that can match with Riley in recruiting and has pull and stature, you need a DC that creates a culture of accountability, discipline, mental toughness, and physicality. When you here Shaw say he’s a… Read more »
And also….where the hell has Duce Robinson been???
Frosh on a team full of great receivers … he will get his chance next year. Wisely he is on the FG and PAT kick team getting experience.
What worries me as much or even more than the D itself is Riley’s soft, weak, lazy attitude towards it whenever asked about it. It’s like “meh, we’ll be fine”. It’s sending the wrong message. He should be harsh and critical and demand excellence. His defense is literally a national laughing stock. NOBODY is taking this USC team seriously, and they shouldn’t. Does the HC care at all?? Does he not realize how badly things truly are??? If he’s not gonna show much of a reaction or that he expects/wants better…then why should the players? This will never change under him unfortunately, it’s just the type of coach he… Read more »
How is it that is you look at the majority of the ranked teams in the PAC-12 and they have a deeper roster defensively than we do with ranked players. I’m ok with Utah and Oregon being there defensively, but explain how Oregon St has a better defense than we do and is able to get defensive recruits. How is it that we have one of the top offenses in the nation and you can’t attract defensive recruits? Why are we loosing the recruiting battle to Oregon defensively and the best defensive guys taken from Bosco, and Mater Dei are… Read more »
This.
LR will never be able to build a championship caliber defense. It’s more than just the Dcoordinator. It’s about the HC and his philosophy. He doesn’t recruit D, he doesn’t coach D, he’s not the right HC for this program IMO. Not if they truly want to be “back”.
You can’t have it all man. It doesn’t matter what Riley’s tendencies are he is a top 5 coach in the nation. Riley ain’t going nowhere. The problem is we need to invest in a DC that has recruiting and pulling power! You need a DC that is a complete hard ass and instills discipline, accountability, physicality, and mental toughness. I’m also pretty sure Riley know’s he can’t ride the offense to the big show and there is plenty of evidence in that with Georgia, and Michigan and the rest of the big boys.
Can someone plz tell me how these Trojans under Lincoln Riley are any different than any of the other run-and-gun, high powered offenses with weak defenses and zero physical presence teams we’ve seen since 2005/6?? It’s same old BS all over again. Just like Kiffin and Sark. Nothing has changed. Lincoln Riley was a bad hire. This program NEEDS to find a HC that preaches defense and toughness. That runs the ball and stops the run first and foremost. Build an identity and brand of football around that and only then will USC finally be “back”. Until then, until they… Read more »
Silly take. He’s one of the 5 best coaches in America. Grinch snd the defense are not good, but there is no better offense or developer of QB’s.
every team in America other than Michigan run a spread offense. It’s not 1980 any longer.
So what you’re saying is you’re ok with not contending for championships? Cuz that’s what’s gonna happen with this HC. Defense will never be addressed, team will continue to be a flashy run and gun offense that gets owned whenever they face a tough opponent. How is he a top 5 coach??? Cuz he’s a QB whisperer? U want a coach that van develop NFL caliber QBs or you want to compete for championships???
Who do you want? Who’s better? Kirby Smart isn’t walking through the door. You will get an elite coach on one side or the other. In todays football, elite offenses and QB play win games. Ask Georgia how they are feeling about having a weak offense
who you after?
dave Arranda? No thanks
Matt Campbell? Nope
Mike Elko?
mark Stoops?
Nah. I’ll take Riley.
Elite offense/QB wins championships? Wrong.
its still a TEAM sport. U do indeed need a legit QB/Offense but you need the D just as much.
you need BOTH.
And LR doesn’t coach both. He’s an offense-only minded HC. It shows in his recruiting too. As well as his lack of urgency in addressing the DC situation.
Idk who the right guy is. I don’t have a name.
But I do know 100% that it’s not Lincoln Riley.
You can win championships with an average D snd elite offense – 2019 LSU, 2020 Alabama, KC Chiefs. Even Georgia needed 40 plus to beat OSU last year. You cannot win championships with elite defense and average offense.
Bingo Chris. Great examples of today’s football.
We don’t have average D!! It’s below average!!
Riley is a bad hire? Yeah, I guess we should have hired Dave Aranda or Justin Wilcox instead. After all, they are defense first coaches, and their resumes are way more impressive than Riley.
Ya hiring a 71-13 lifetime coach is always a bad idea
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Riley says he has confidence in Grinch. Okay then, we might as well get used to what we have been seeing. According to Shaw Grinch is a great coach and the players continue weekly to let him down. Shaw did his share allowing at least 3 touchdowns with his lousy play. Not sure if they have another safety any better but it looks dismal with Shaw back there.
Unless something dramatic happens, as long as Grinch is the coordinator, we are doomed against good teams! When have you ever seen as dynamic a QB do the things Williams does only to be outdone by a poor tackling (d)efense!
If I’m a Buff fan I got to feel good about the future as opposed to USC fans who may have seen the peak of the season certainly by next week.
Nah. Colorado still has more losses ahead of them than we do.
Idk, that’s debatable. USC is going to lose at least 4 games from here on out.
OLE MISS and Lane Kiffin beat LSU 55-49. Ya Baby!
I am happy Kiffin beat Kelly!! They sure know how to throw a party down there in Oxford.
Sweet!
That great SEC D … those teams tackle worse than we do
OLE MISS losing to LSU 49-47 with 5 mins to go. Go Land Sharks!
Not sure that land shark D is any better than ours, but they can score!
you mean the Rebels? Landsharks would be the name of a men’s team in a softball beer league.
