USC Upgrading Its Defensive Coaching Again!

Bruce Feldman (The Athletic) has tweeted (among other media reports) that USC is set to bring in new CB coach/defensive passing game coordinator, Donte Williams, from the ORE Ducks. This is a tremendous coaching pick-up by Helton and Bohn.

GoDucks.com bio — Donte Williams joined the Ducks in January 2018 as the cornerbacks coach on Mario Cristobal’s staff.

Williams comes to Cristobal’s staff after spending last season at Nebraska where he coached cornerbacks and sub-package specialists (nickels and dimes), while also being involved in the pass defense coordination. Before his season at Nebraska, Williams served as the cornerbacks coach at Arizona during the 2016 season where he was credited for energizing the Wildcats’ recruiting efforts.

Williams began his full-time Division I coaching career at San Jose State in 2013. After a season coaching cornerbacks for the Spartans, he was promoted to secondary coach and recruiting coordinator for his final two seasons in San Jose.

The Spartans’ defense made immediate improvements with Williams’ addition. In his first season overseeing the entire secondary in 2014, San Jose State’s total defense improved 71 spots in the FBS rankings, while passing yards allowed improved 85 spots and passing touchdowns allowed jumped 102 spots.

In 2014, SJSU led the country in both passing yards allowed (117.8) and passing touchdowns allowed (6), while ranking 33rd in total defense (357.3). Those numbers were a decrease of 102 yards per game in total defense, as well as 126.9 yards per game in passing yards allowed with 20 fewer touchdown passes allowed. In Williams’ final season at San Jose State, the Spartans ranked second in passing yards allowed (157.8), 29th in passing touchdowns allowed (16) and 34th in total defense (358.5).

In addition to his on-field work, Williams earned recognition for bolstering San Jose State’s recruiting efforts. In 2015, Sports Illustrated named Williams a top 10 recruiter in college football. He was also named the top recruiter in the Mountain West Conference in 2014 by 247Sports.

Williams joined the Spartans staff after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant at Washington where he coached cornerbacks and linebackers. He started his career as the secondary coach at Los Angeles Harbor College before working in the same position at El Camino College (2008) and Mount San Antonio College (2009). Williams spent the 2010 season as a quality control coach at Nevada assisting with linebackers.

Williams graduated from Idaho State in 2006 where he served as defensive team captain.

Good news for a change. It seems that the hype is going become huge, the media is taking notice of USC again. Now all they have to do is learn how to tackle, block, and how to win. The recruiting benefit of Williams coming will help in 2021 minutely and 2022 considerably. All of our conjecture on Heltons position on running the team will boil out in September. I cannot believe CH had anything to do with this hire though. totally out of his league and beyond his capabilities. I think Bohn did it.

USC lucked into this one. Hopefully he’s able to stay longer than one season. Has there ever been another coaching staff where the head coach was the weakest link? I doubt it…

Hey Clay you must (every day ) remind yourself of this >>>>>>> You where NOT hired by Bohn. (In the long run I gotta wonder how much loyalty Mr. Bohn will have for Mr. Helton ).

This is a great hire. Bohn is taking charge of the program for sure because Clay would never make this hire. Hope surrounding Clay with good assistants helps turn things around but we’ll have to see. Clay needs to let his coaches do their jobs and not get in their way.

At least someone in the Football program got it right for once, Williams is a rising star !
His trajectory and potential mimics Dave Aranda’. I believe his recruiting prowess exceeds that of Aranda.
Haven’t felt this in a long time…Fight On !!!

Alfa, Something is changing and we can all see it. From what I can see, Bohn is taking over the football program much like Barry Alvarez took over the football program at Wisconsin. Everyone knows that Barry Alvarez runs WI football and the coach is held accountable by him. It appears something like that is now taking place inside USC football. Clay is a total failure as a HC of a blue chip football program, just about as large a failure as is imaginable. The entire staff he had picked has been fired and been shown (by subsequent hiring) to… Read more »

Clay will do just enough to keep getting a paycheck and nothing more.

If memory serves, this the first hire in a while where the team being left wanted to keep their coach. I read that the ducks served up a counter offer. This leads me to believe somebody is selling these open positions as a possible stepping stone to the head coaching position. I hope this is a positive move for a change.

I am beginning to possibly believe that the Order has already been given by Bohn. The order given to CH to give his cordinators a COMPLETELY free hand gameday AND practices …….FIGHT ON !!!!!

The upgrades on D staff are amazing. Orlando is light years ahead of Clancy. The two DB coaches are superior to Burns and both can recruit. Orlando can also recruit. I wonder who we get as a DL coach. In this case, Orlando and Helton got lucky. He took the job to be near his Dad. Sounds like a really great hire. So far, the 2020 upgrades on D have been better than 2019 upgrades on O. Overall, I think we have to used to Clay. What I am seeing is Bohn working to strengthen the staff around him. That… Read more »

With this new staff, Helton is clearly the weakest link. Could we witness a mid season firing?
