USC Trojans This & That — 8/21

“We came into the process and said it’s not going to be about age or who’s been on the field,” Clay Helton explained. “It’s going to be about how people play and how people compete on a day-to-day basis and execute the offense and how they do it consistently. JT did that.”

“I really appreciate how JT came into it understanding, that that’s real life,” Helton said. “He knew he had three really talented guys right there competing with him, and he never took it for granted that, you know, ‘I’ve had success in the past,’ but rather, ‘I need to raise my game to earn and fight for this job.’ That’s where I’ve seen his maturity grow.

“We were very surprised with Kedon coming out of the spring, very impressed,” Helton said. “We went through this camp and another 15 practices to see if it wasn’t just spring. He did it again.”

Most everybody was not absorbed into the drama of the QB “derby” USC just finished. We all pretty much knew Helton would name JT the starter, it was an automatic in Heltons mind. What is surprising is Sears at #4. A lot of the USC population was really convinced Jack should be starting. What we all missed was this is USC football, Helton style. Thank God Toa is graduated or he would have won the competition for center again this year. I am convinced Helton will not play the best player, but who he feels the closest to. Now we… Read more »

There must be something in practice that is seen on game days. When replaced last season Daniels was not the best quarterback on the team. Both backups looked better and moved the team further than Daniels did. However by the time Daniels had been reduced to a squashed bug in the backfield, his line had proven it wasn’t game ready.
So like every other position in the team last season has to be left behind. I hope Daniels gets some protection and shows some real potential this season.

First we had Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, and now we have Daniels & Slovis. Hope it’s not just another comedy team. And you got to feel for Fink and Sears, two guys who could get any girl they wanted in high school, but now are relegated to the Death Valley of football– the bench. Alas, such is life.

I’m sorry but if Fink and Sears wanted the job they should have performed better in spring camp and fall camp and proven they were better than Daniels and Slovis. The fact a freshman beat them out speaks volumes about how they performed.

Just read an article in the Fresno Bee that Fresno St. is going to beat SC because Tedford has a better football program than Helton. I am certain that the Fresno kids will come into the Coliseum expecting to win. And, SC, well, it is not ranked for the first time in years; it has no pre-season AA for the first time in years; it has only one pre-season All Pac 12 pick, and it picked to finish 2nd or 3rd in the weakest division in the weakest conference in Power 5. As Allen wrote earlier, SC is, under Clay… Read more »
