USC Trojans This & That — 7/8

Per Greg Katz of WeAreSC.com —

“The term “Trojan family” seems to have undertaken a concerted, somewhat organized effort through email to alert new President Folt just how unhappy they are with the USC athletic department. Don’t kill the messenger, but a major amount of emails – as told to me through one very active alum – is well underway and the messages through email all say the same thing: Things need to change immediately, and those in the crosshairs are at the very top of the athletic department food chain. At this point, there’s no question that Folt is very much aware of the toxic problems, and the only questions really are what is she going to do about them and when?

“With the FBI investigating athletic administrative employees for the pay-to-play admission scandals (follow the money) and the lawsuits both current and new ones probably on the way, it’s a tangled cardinal and gold web being woven. It makes one wonder if the only way out – before or after the legal system runs its course – is a complete makeover of the athletic administration (some may call it administrative leave). It may take a complete “fresh start” to regain the credibility and confidence of those inside and outside the department (namely the exasperated fans base and powerful alumni) in order to return to its rightful place in the L.A. sports community. As things stand today, it’s safe to say that there is little to no faith in the current direction of USC athletics, which is so sad to say.”

USC really needs to clean house in the athletic department, from top down. All the assistants and associates need to go as well and a new experienced AD needs to be brought in who can hire good people and great head coaches. All head coaches should be notified that they may need to update their resumes. It won’t happen overnight, but it sure needs to happen. It is great to see there are so many people vocalizing (email) their feeling and desires.

A little informal poll: What would you rather — USC goes 8-4 and Helton and Swann are retained, or USC goes 4-8 and Helton and Swann are fired?

That is a tough one. I have to vote 8-4. I can’t stand SC losing.

Well I’d prefer 10-2 and a Pac-12 Championship but I’d be happy with 8-4 and Helton and Swann staying. I suspect Dr. Folt will be making changes in the next year or two anyway.

New wrinkle — what if the four losses are ND, UCLA, Washington, and Stanford?

We lose to UCLA and ND again and Helton and Swann are done.

So here’s a scary thought — if we finished 8-4 with losses to ND, UCLA, Washington and Stanford — that scenario could still end with USC winning the South! UCLA would be our only South loss and if the Bruins are otherwise the grease fire most of us expect, winning the South by beating the remaining South teams and getting a little help could happen. Would it be hard for USC to clean house after winning the South?

I have no preference. I would like the team to play as well as it can and I hope Clay has figured out what he can do well and what he stinks at. In particular, Clay will need to realize that he is lousy at setting culture and accountability and MUST force his staff to do that for him. He will also need to realize he stinks as setting O scheme (even though that is his background). Finally, he will need to shut up and not take any credit if the team does well, but will need to step up… Read more »

I would prefer a winning season!! And even a Pac12 championship or Bowl Game! This 2019 season will show how CH and LS will perform and show their leadership…even with a winning season, there still could be some housecleaning in the athletic department down the line….

I want change in the nonchalant approach to the hiring of top personnel in the athletic department. I would like more administrator involvement in the granting of large contracts. What I don’t want as of today is a change in leadership over the football team. Unless there is an immediate replacement, Clay Helton needs to stay on. With 54 days until kickoff,it’s too late. Every abrupt change we have seen in recent memory has been bad for the team. In fact the only reason I think Swann kept Helton is because he wanted stability for the team. (But this was… Read more »

I agree and disagree. IMO, Swann needs to be replaced immediately. He is simply not qualified for the job and clearly lacks an administrative ability. In a word, he is incompetent-a figurehead only. Referring to the old Mary Tyler Moore show, he is Ted Knight. That is an easy call. It would be foolish to remove Helton and let Blindsided find the new coach. One replaces Swann FIRST, which is going to take time. The new AD can then evaluate Helton at season’s end. Thus, I agree Helton must be left in place absent a truly urgent reason. I totally… Read more »

Not sure what to make of Greg Katz’s post above. We all want the athletic program to be the best it can be and for football to return to the national prominence we all know. What is will take to do that and how soon Dr. Folt takes steps to achieve that are another matter. She has a lot of messes to clean up before the athletic program.

On this one, I see it differently. The Athletic Department is the foundation, IMO , of the USC Family culture, the bridge that helps link families together and then to SC. It is the one aspect of of culture that separates SC from, say, UCLA or Stanford. Right now that Athletic Department is a grease fire (probably raging inferno would be more apt). Lynn Swann is clearly incompetent- no competent manager would have allowed even a fraction of what we have witnessed. It is an easy call – remove Lynn Swann immediately and start the process to replace him with… Read more »

Actually I am wondering if these new charges against the football team are enough to fire Helton with cause and this no payout. I hope Helton is the leopard who chances spots, but I doubt it.

That would be my “absolutely forced to do so.” If the internal evidence is that Helton covered up academic fraud, he will have to be terminated, no matter the consequences. If Helton goes, I would then clean house and make GH the interim HC.
