USC Trojans This & That — 7/17

Redshirt SR DE/DL Christian Rector (6-4, 275, L.A. Loyola) will be repping USC at the Pac-12 Media Day on July 24, 3:45 pm.

In 2018, Rector appeared in all 12 games, with eight starts (at DE at STAN and TEXAS, at OLB against WSU, UTAH, ASU, CAL, UCLA and ND).  He had 48 tackles, including nine for losses of 44 yds (with 4.5 sacks for minus 29 yds), plus 2 deflections, a FR and a FF. He made the 2018 AP All-Pac-12 second team and Pro Football Focus All-Pac-12 second team.

Is it me or did the coaches seem to zero in on one player per position the past few years? I keep calling it sanctions mentality, but actually it may have been inexperienced coaches. Although I think Daniels played well, and few could blame him for being shell shocked behind that line, he was outshined by both backups. That example is just one of many. I agree with your assessment. While I don’t expect a loaded team like we had in 1972, SC has always had enough talent, except for those years when the sanctions and scholarship limitations were taking effect. The ’72 team was loaded: Mike Rae and Pat Haden at QB; Anthony Davis, Rod McNeil and Allen Carter at Tailback; and many other positions were stacked. We now have a talented group of wide receivers, at least 3 Quarterbacks who are competing for the starting position, a bevy of Running Backs and more talent on the Defensive side of the ball.
