USC Trojans This & That — 7/11

Four-star prep Drake Jackson (6-4, 275, Rivals #38 recruit in the country) from Corona Centennial; Is he headed to a frosh starting role and the label of USC’s next bonafide DL superstar, a top 10 first-round pick? Two previous #99 Trojans have gone onto USC’s All-American Wall: Tim Ryan (’86-89) and Mike Patterson (’01-04).

It looks to me that the DL should be a huge strength this year. It is probably the most talented (and one of the deepest) on the team. It looks like someone got Clancy to go with a 4-3 rather than his hybrid D (3-4-4 or 2-4-5 or whatever the heck he was running last year). I don’t know what Clancy was thinking with his 3/4 alignment. But his defensive backfield (including most of his LBs) got shredded due to the other team’s QB had time to wait for his receivers to get open. You give any receiver enough time, he will get open. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to realize this but Clancy wasn’t going to change his defense like Monte Kiffin wasn’t going to change his defense.

Thus, my view that unless we see a completely new Clancy, Clay will be forced to fire him mid-season, ala Lincoln Riley firing Mike Stoops after his D laid an egg against Texas last year.

I don’t think Clay will fire anyone, especially mid season. Not in him. He has to be forced by Swann to fire someone, and after the season is over. Besides, who would step in to replace Clancy mid season.

Now if Clancy can unleash the beast, perhaps the defense can be adequate for a change.
