USC Trojans This & That — 6/21

USA TODAY

Ranks Amon-Ra St. Brown as USC’s best WR

10. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Southern California (So.)

“This is based primarily on promise, even if Brown met his five-star expectations during the Trojans’ dreadful 2018 season. Look for Brown to mesh with Graham Harrell’s new offensive scheme and continue building a rapport with quarterback JT Daniels as he challenges for the top spot in the Pac-12 in all meaningful receiving categories.”

Strangely, USA Today’s Paul Myerberg ranks St. Brown as the nation’s 10th best WR prospect, while leaving off 6-4, 225 pound SR Michael Pittman, Jr, the Trojan who was generally regarded as the best receiving threat last season (perfectly described as “dreadful” by Myerberg).

Pittman had 41 rec for 758 yds (18.5 ypc) and six TDs. Brown would probably be better described as “up-and-coming” or a “breakout candidate”  —  see Street & Smith’s PreSeason mag. And with SR Tyler Vaughns also coming back off 58 rec/674 yds/6 TDs, the Trojans could make a strong case for having the nation’s best receiving corp, period. Expect absolutely huge things from the threesome under Graham Harrell’s “find green grass” offense.

It’s also interesting that Daniels always gets the immediate nod from the national media as the probable starter at QB for the Trojans. There’s lots of local speculation that Jack Sears might deserve the job, but that possibility never seems to play out outside the borders of L.A. Let’s face it. No one thinks Sears will start over Daniels, because everyone thinks Clay Helton prefers Daniels.

With all the hype about the offense, it appears as though a lot of people are hoping SC outscores its opponents to win football games. Having played the game myself, it takes excellence in all facets of the game-offense, defense and special teams to be a top program. I’m one that believes strong defenses win championships in all sports!

What do you all think of these strength training hype videos USC is pumping out on their YouTube page? Are you buying it? Anyone ready to call this improvement on two of the Five Golden Deficiencies (discipline and culture)? Or is USC just really good at producing hype videos?! Ausmus clearly has either the marching orders, the freedom, or both to restore the values of the Pete Carroll era (i.e., be early, always compete, protect the team). He is clearly working with that structure in the hopes of making lightning strike twice. My only question is, why has Clay Helton… Read more »

If GH leaves at least there is a back up plan of sorts, the sort that everyone would hate I would think that Jinks would be named the OC. I don’t want to throw the guy under the bus, but he did not perform well at Bowling Green.

Whoa…that first sentence threw me: “If GH leaves…”. You made it sound like he was being targeted on a current search. More like “When GH leaves if he’s not promoted to HC after killing it on offense for two years”.

The trio of Daniels,Brown and Pittman ( untested) are the best in the Country. We’ll see how quick the OC can implement his Offensive scheme and in game adjustments. Daniels must…hit tight windows, fast reads, along with nimble feet in the pocket. If this doesn’t take place… what’s the backup plan during the game, only time will tell. WE R SC 4life……

We all know Helton prefers Daniels, but hopefully the decision rests with Harrell. If not, do not expect GH to stick around and then watch Helton screw the team up again. The need for a quick thinker at QB is the #1 need at the position and Daniels has not shown he has that, at least not last season. Granted not all his fault, but if Sears was QB perhaps something new would happen, like some success. I just hope the staff will get some flexibility and allow changes to be made instead of the starter at all costs like… Read more »
