USC Trojans This & That — 5/19

California five-star Clovis Buchanan RB Kendall Milton says he favors LSU, GA, OHIO ST and ALA. With USC (formerly and famously known as Tailback U) not making Milton’s cut yet, and so much concern about Clay Helton’s 2020 recruiting efforts (only three commitments and ranked #54), what’s in store for Trojan football without the always so-called “edge in talent”, at least in the Pac-12?

John Arnett, aka Jaguar John, USC All-American RB in 1955 from Los Angeles Manual Arts.

Can USC even realistically expect to attract the best RBs any longer with the Air Raid in place with the Trojans now?

Interesting that the blog features a photo of “Jaguar” Jon Arnett, one of the most versatile RB’s USC has ever had IMO. He could not only run, but also catch passes out of the backfield as well as the flanker position, and run back kicks. One can only imagine how valuable he would be in the Air Raid offense. I was just a baby when Jon attended USC, but my grandmother often told me about how good he was and fun to watch. I’m looking forward to seeing what the current RB’s can do this season.

This will be one of two posts I will put up today. It should now be obvious to any rational person that “USC does not recruit itself.” USC can recruit like very few schools, but it must be successful to do so. USC has, quite candidly, surrendered (I think squandered would be more apt) its huge advantage. Given how weak the Pac 12 is, SC should be dominating and playing in the final 4 yearly. But, that did not happen. What adjectives would you use to describe Clay Helton’s coaching ability? A few that come to mine: overwhelmed, incompetent, lack… Read more »

If you are being recruited by top 10 programs wouldn’t you rather go there than coming to usc at this point in time? Haden ruined the program. Swann isn’t doing any better and this is Helton’s “make it or break it year”. The 2020 recruiting class will most likely start to fill up toward the end of the 2nd half of the season if the team has a positively good record. Helton must prove he is a winner in order to get the top notch recruits. It’s a whole different recruiting game today than in seasons past.

There’s was nothing like watching USC football as a kid in the 60’s/70’s with a fresh ocean breeze, high sky, and listening to Jim Kelley one of life’s treat. WE R SC 4ever !! Thanks !!
