USC Trojans This & That — 4/18

J. Brady McCollough (LAT)  —  “We have nothing but admiration for Clay and feel the same way about Graham,” Mike Fink said. “It’s just that he’s got two years left, and we’re sort of looking at how last season went and, rather than roll the dice and run the risk Matt becomes the backup again, he’s in a good position since he’s going to graduate in June that he won’t have to sit out a year and he’d get two years somewhere. We’re pretty confident he’s a starting quarterback somewhere.”

Mike Fink said that Matt could decide to return to USC if he does not like the schools who pursue him on the transfer market. Fink played in four games last season, completing seven of nine passes for 46 yards and one touchdown.

Just listened to an interesting podcast from Dan Weber on Ryan’s board. Dan said that at the Army HS All-American Game JT was better than Trevor Lawrence at Clemson. Hence, he concluded if Lawrence had come to SC and JT to Clemson, JT would have performed as well as Lawrence did. He also said Lawrence would have had the same results as JT with the 2018 Trojans. Interesting comment and I think well founded. Wonder if the board agrees. The implications of this point for recruiting are truly terrifying. If SC tanks again in 2019 and Swann retains Clay, look… Read more »

I like Dan but as Allen stated you can’t judge JT from last season but you also can’t judge Lawrence from that game. I don’t know anyone who thinks that JT was ever the better quarterback. There is no way on earth that any coach in college football would not have taken Lawrence over Daniels (including Helton) – he truly is that good. JT coming to USC and starting was just a weird situation because he came in the fall and also because if Amon Ra didn’t come with him he might have been one of USC’s worst quarterbacks because… Read more »

Just read a great article on John Jackson 2 and John Jackson 3 in the Times. Highly recommend it. Very moving and very well written.

Matt Fink did not burn any bridges when he thanked Coach Helton, so my guess is that he remains a Trojan when other schools cannot accommodate him….Touching article about John Jackson in the L.A. Times this morning. I did not know he had suffered a stroke. I really liked him as the color-man on the SC telecasts, and will miss him. Personally, I worry about strokes– it can change one’s life in a matter of seconds.

Can’t say that Fink is doing anything wrong either. He got his degree and is ready to move on. Wish him the best.

I agree. He gave USC his time and now he needs to look out for himself. i bet he was told he was #4 on the depth chart.

I only hope he doesn’t end up at a Pac-12 school that we may play. If it happens, then we’ll deal with it.

I don’t see a pac 12 school that would start him other than maybe UCLA…

I could see Fink being sought after, now being schooled in the Gumbo and Air Raid offenses. His versatility would be an asset.

This is a product of the transfer portal and it will happen to almost every program on a yearly basis. Kids want to play. If you hoped to start but have younger guys ahead of you in depth chart, it’s tough.
The good news in this case is Fink has earned the right to do this. He honored his end of the bargain by playing football, USC theirs by giving him a degree. This is how the transfer portal can work well. Hope he ends up starting somewhere this year.

Matt has been a good Trojan, but I have to agree with his move. I don’t see it as a play me or else move, rather I see it as a writing on the wall move. He spent his time on the sidelines but someone newer and shinier came along. I guess it’s time to say thanks for being there. I think if the coaching situation was different this might not have happened. Sometimes I don’t think players are being utilized well by the coaches. I can use fruit as an analogy. If you pick it at the right time… Read more »
