USC Trojans This & That — 3/5

S Marvell Tell III (here returning a pick against UCLA) at the NFL combine: The USC product opened some eyes with his explosive jumps (42-inch vertical jump and 11-foot-4 broad jump) and solid footwork in drills. Tell has better than anticipated range and ball skills, which will help his status as a Day 2 prospect if he runs a solid 40 at his pro day.

In reading and listening to what those who were at practice today said one thing jumped out to me. That was the fact that this practice was different. Not just different to be different, but actual coaching going on addressing the realities of deficiencies. In the past three years SC practices have been anything but different, They have been as predictable as game day’s offense. To me, this is a good sign. Its a start. Fight ON

Yeah they had talked a lot about this practice is better than any spring practice last year which is sad but a good sign. They talked about Harrell practicing the play calling from up top, talked about burns actually going out and correcting and digging into some butt for simple mistakes which is already adding to my excitement of having him. I also heard the most important thing of accountability of their actions and Helton actually preaching discipline let’s see if it sticks

JT was national player of the year for a reason. I believe he will make a huge jump this year. You can’t compare passing records with air raid, even the average QB’s shatter records, but I believe he will be the 1st team pac 12 qb.

Pretty neat little hype video can’t wait to see what this season brings. Also is Helton’s post-practice interview. Maybe it’s just because spring ball is finally starting but it sounds like this team is gonna come out fighting if they stick to what they say

Haven’t checked out this Blog for weeks because nothing is going on, but now it is time for some football (albeit only Spring)….Reading Lynn Swann’s comments to a booster club recently, he does not inspire confidence. I don’t believe football is even a big priority with him….How different will SC football be? My guess is not much. Sure, Harrell (spelling?) will make it more fun, but productivity-wise, the jury is still out….And recall that SC had a 20ish recruiting class and lost portal transfers. And other schools stocked up with very good footballers. The competition has never been stiffer, so… Read more »

I’m looking forward to seeing a nice 15-yard post pattern up the middle on a play action call on 1st and 10. Here’s to hoping GH can make it a reality…

I’d like to see a 6-8min drive in the 4th qtr to put the game away.

I had watched a video on the current state of USC and had listened to a podcast this morning talking about the defense. They had talked about how the captains from last year really didn’t talk much or really pass down knowledge to the younger players or the players going to fill their roles. Then on the podcast they talked about a very solid point that when it comes to great teams, is they hit a speed bump like going 1-3 but after they hit it they address it and get better. After they fix it though they don’t just… Read more »

Young leaving now too? I agree with Allen that all of the blame does not go to the coaches, but this is a representation of the culture that CH has created at USC. It will not change until CH is gone.

There’s also the current times we live it. Players feel much more entitled than any other time in the history of college football. I say good riddance, if they have a wandering eye, let them go.

Utah, It is hard to imagine a failure greater than CH. He promised to return SC to a power run game ala Stanford – total failure. He promised a tough disciplined OL (I am the son of an OL coach) – total failure. He promised a mentally tough and team of a band of brothers – another failure, though not on the level of the O promises. The transfers out reflect the collapse of his culture. SC has FOUR scholarship WRs. That is amazing – FOUR. We will get four more in 2019, all true frosh. Last year SC was… Read more »

So true RJ- we are screwed next year, probably with another losing record. CH= Epic fail. Why didn’t Swann fire him when he had the chance?

Marvin Tell showed the tough-love coaching he got (very little) and the hard lessons he had to learn on the field. It forced him to be all he could be to survive. Now he’s nobody’s fool.

Despite my gloomy expectations (4-8) for the upcoming season, the first day of Spring Practice always brings excitement and hope. One thing I will miss this year is Garry Paskwietz’s post practice comments. For those of us unable to come to practice Garry was able to make us “see” through his eyes, “hear” through his ears, and catch the contagion that was Garry’s enthusiasm and hope for the latest iteration of the Trojans. Despite the fact that the first day of practice was little more than an eyeball test and head count of who showed up, Garry made it interesting.… Read more »

Scipio, try Dan Weber. His reports are excellent. He is on Ryan’s site. You and I see 2019 the same way. I see a 2-4 start and at best 6-6. I really think it will go 4-8, with SC going 2-4 the back half, but I could be wrong. I see SC beating AZ and CO and losing to ASU (at ASU), Oregon, Cal (at Cal), and UCLA. Of that group, the only game I think I may have wrong is Cal. Chip destroyed Clancy last year. I see no reason not to expect more of the same in 2019.… Read more »

Thanks TR. I do read them, and they are an excellent source of info and behind the scenes stuff. But with Garry it was his life, and it shone through. Regarding the team’s prospects for next year the only area of hope I see is what GH can bring to the table that would positively effect the rest of the dead wood staff. Remember, NT is the same level as Western Kentucky, and we saw how that transplant to SC worked out,

Hope springs eternal for the young guys and it starts today. Going to see a lot of new faces, hopefully it is going to be a big improvement. We shall see. With what SAS posted about Young leaving, would you think that perhaps Helton would go to the portal for some help in staffing this team?

Steve, do you recall that anyone came to SC thru the Portal? I only remember guys leaving. It seems to have been a one way street going out.

Remember this is the first year of the portal. Perhaps Helton doesn’t know what it is for other than a black hole his players keep falling in to. He sure could have used a little of the talent that was on it and is now gone. Still a couple of good players he could pick up.

I still haven’t heard of any players in the portal system that want to come to SC.

After reviewing the depth chart by position……..sort of clears all the fantasy away……..5-7 might be in the cards.

I have mixed feelings about SC bringing in players from the portal. Helton should be really careful to make sure he doesn’t inherit someone else’s problems. He has enough problems already.

Spring practice- if ever there was a real time to spring forward. All I want from this team is for the coaches to realize we aren’t a sanctioned team anymore. Return to real college football instead of bad imitation pro football. Use every player, that’s what they’re there for.
