USC Trojans This & That — 3/26

“Our guys practice with energy. They like to be out here and that’s a sign of a good team,” says USC DB coach Greg Burns. “When you like to practice and like playing and working with the guys you’re competing with, it becomes good. Nobody’s a starter. Nobody’s a backup. You have an opportunity to come in and compete. Everyone needs to have the mindset that they have to prove they deserve their spot.”

“We are at a different pace right now,” safety Talanoa Hufanga said. “It’s something we weren’t accustomed to last year. You can see all the energy we bring now. We’re excited to be out here and we don’t want (what happened) last year.” Hufanga said of deciphering Graham Harrell’s new-look offense, “It’s awesome. You get a lot of reps. For us, this new (defensive) scheme allows us to play fast and free.”

Love the assistant coach and player interviews. They seem like a completely different team. Every spring coaches and players have sky high hopes, this year is no different in that department. But I certainly think that there is a confidence and sense of excitement that hasn’t been there in a long while. Last spring was one article after another about how bad the offense looked.

Does Hufanga have a broken collarbone again?

Earlier this spring I heard that refs at practice are being used to call out penalties and players are being “punished “ for boneheaded mistakes. If that is true, then that is a good sign. However the best approach is combining punishment with teaching. “You were called for holding, do you know why? …. let’s correct that technique after you take a lap. “
I hope there is something like this going on.

50 updowns is better than a lap.

At least early, the protocol for a flag was that a player is pulled out of the drill or competition, and has a conversation with his coach (Clay in some cases) and the referee. Then the player does up/downs. I’d be interested to know if this practice has been kept up, as it should throughout Spring and Fall Camps.

Heart-shaped apology box comes by 8 p.m. that night, or the player in question runs to the transfer portal.

It’s my understanding, personal foul and Verbal disrespect to the officials violation’s result in Saturday night and Sunday stable duties with Traveler.

Look CH’s tenure at SC has been nothing but trial and error. His inexperience has been obvious through the past 3 seasons. If the guy truly practices what he preaches by stepping aside and let his assistants run the offense and defense, and not interfering with the week in and week out competitions to start, then we might have turned a corner. With the starting talent we have on paper we should win out this season. Personally I don’t see us winning more than 7-8 games, but we soon shall see. People can change if their emotional intelligence is up… Read more »

Agreed. Most of us have witnessed this in the business world. If you are fortunate to have talent, use it. Get out of the way and ask how to be of help. A good leader will do that. If all Clay does is recruit and fight to support and keep good assistants on staff he may be on to something. We will see.

Bleacher Report had a post indicating Larry Scott turned down ESPN who was will to broadcast the PAC-12 network. I wonder what that was all about? If Scott kept trying to get the network on DirecTV and couldn’t, ESPN would be the next best offering. Something really smells here?

There really does seem to be a culture change happening, I hope they stay the new course.

My concern is how the defense plays against teams like Stanford, Utah, Washington, and Notre Dame who will emphasize physicality. If we are going 1’s against 1’s, which is great, our 1’s on defense is practicing against air raid offense every day. Their rythyms will be geared toward stopping that style of offense.
