USC Trojans This & That — 3/24

Tommy Trojan was modeled after different USC football players (Russ Saunders, Ernie Pinckert, Henry Becker, Larry Stevens and John Ward) as visual references for the statue. On the bronze statue’s granite pedestal are inscribed the qualities of the ideal Trojan: “FAITHFUL, SCHOLARLY, SKILLFUL, COURAGEOUS, AMBITIOUS.” It was unveiled during the University’s 50th Jubilee in 1930. It cost $10,000 to build, after which a $1 surcharge was added onto the season football tickets in order to help offset this cost.

Norman Corwin (revered and honored teacher at USC from 1979 – 2011, wrote the following as part of a larger speech and on September 26, 1986, it was presented at Bovard Auditorium during the Campaign for USC):

“There is on this campus, not far from where you are sitting, a sculpture of a young man. He stands with an outthrust sword in his right hand and a raised shield in his left, and he obviously means business.

“For more than half a century he has been the inseparable symbol of this university. But this morning, when we meet to consider ourselves, and what we do, and how well we do it, it is perhaps not idle to ask just what that Trojan symbolizes. He’s a warrior, but this is not a military academy. He has a noble mien; he is beautiful; he is confidently poised to attack or defend – but exactly who is the adversary, and from what quarter does he come? If we look for clues on the pedestal of the sculpture, we find two lines of poetry in the Latin of Virgil, which translate

Where shall arise again the destined reign of Troy.

“I think the answer to the question is that our militant young man, as well as his implied foe, stand for whatever we want to read into them. I’m sure I’m not alone in perceiving Tommy Trojan’s symbolic enemies to be not Greeks bearing gifts or Huns bearing arms, but the far more menacing, because far more subtle and invidious, enemies of ignorance, indifference, greed, mediocrity, prejudice, complacency, boredom, eroded values, low expectations, and ravenous hungering for sensation.”

While it is normal for defense to be ahead of offense this early in Spring, we are already seeing some of the early sunshine from the program pundits dialed back. In the first week, it was lots of “the ball just comes out so fast, very hard to defend.” Well Clancy and Chad K have already been able to create pressure that gets there before that ball is gone, as reports were that the o-line had trouble holding blocks long enough for the QBs to do what they need to do. It doesn’t matter what system you run — nobody… Read more »

Between the no uninjured experienced/quality safety defense, inexperienced corners, lack of proven rushers and the no right side offense with QB’s that think slow because of the new offense…….mixed with the brain dead head coach…….and lack of depth at critical positions………lets just hope we attain bowl eligibility. Anything beyond that is exceeding expectations.

Just like the Roman Empire…. when the great Juius Caesar was assassinated, his successors were by & large never up to saving/maintaining its structured greatness. Romulus Augustulus was the last emperor to rule until he was assassinated by a German King.

A fun intellectual exercise is to realize just how bad an AD Lynn Swann is. What happens if the 2019 Trojans are successful? Like make the final 4. And, folks, that could happen. This team is extremely talented and finally has competent OC and OL coaching. Who knows about Clancy and his D, maybe is plays better with the new culture GH is bringing. IF this team opens 5-1 and loses a close game to either UW or ND on the road, it will be a top 10 team. And, it has top 10 talent. Not depth wise, but is… Read more »

Unless Sam Darnold has a year of eligibility left, no sense in even mentioning playoffs.Clay Helton is an incompetent buffoon, being propped up by our incompetent A.D. Your first thought about 6-6 is spot on. A realistic goal for this team is to be bowl eligible and beating fucla. And if we do get 6 wins, Graham Harrell alone will probably be responsible for half of them

Drew Richmond………pray this staff has some marginal ability to land him. We can’t play this year with what we have at RT.
