USC Trojans This & That — 3/23

Art Mazmanian, a four-year letterman in baseball at USC, has died at the age of 91. He started at shortstop as a freshman in 1945 and at second base in 1948 and ‘49. In ’48, Hank Workman (left) and Mazmanian (right) joined Wally Hood as USC’s initial first-team baseball All-Americans.

In the 1948 CWS title game against Yale and won by USC 9-2, Mazmanian led the Trojans and went 3 for 3 with a run scored, giving USC its first NCAA baseball title. Future President George H.W. Bush played first base for Yale in that game and had a double.

R.I.P. Art Mazmanian. Your team started a sound tradition of USC Baseball winning NCCA titles. When I was a freshman at SC in 1974, Dedeaux Field opened up honoring our coach, Rod Dedeaux. Coach Dedeaux’s teams won 11 NCAA titles. The ’74 team won the NCAA title which was the fifth in a row for the Trojans, with several football players on the team – Anthony Davis, Marvin Cobb, Rob Hertel, Charles Phillips and Rob Adolph.

Rather odd that UCI would have a better baseball team and program than USC since Mike Gillespie was canned by Garrett. That USC has been unable to hire a quality coach since Gillespie is a mystery to me. I refuse to believe that SC cannot field quality baseball teams when other private universities do so. The very odd point is UCI also has a better basketball team than USC. Andy Enfield has had 6 years and his teams are getting worse. I realize his 2019 recruiting is great but one would think after 6 years he would have better results.

With regards to b aseball, USC has totally lost it will. No priority from the AD. Non revenue sport that has a poor coach with no recruiting priorities. Think about it: all three major sport head coaches should be dismissed ASAP based on performance to date. What is Swann doing?
