USC Trojans This & That — 3/17

Lynn Swann seems pensive about a lot these days when available, but one thing he’s absolutely positive about is remaining as USC’s AD until he’s had a ten-year term.

“In corporate America, they look at a tenure of a CEO and they say 10 years is about right, ” says Swann.  That sounds slightly inappropriate as most would argue USC athletics have been handled a lot more like an inner circle country club than some big corporation with many checks and balances.

Just looked at the Coliseum renovation cam. I hate to sound like Wolf, but it looks we are laming out and only replacing about half of the old dilapidated concrete under the seats throughout the bowl. Anyone who has been there knows what bad shape that concrete was in — with chips and pits all over the place. Once you are in there, tearing everything apart and putting new seats everywhere, why wouldn’t you replace it all?! I guess only the big-money donors needed it to look new and shiny. So SC.

I would imagine countless times favors have been asked over the decades in a parent/family member who knows someone and requests a backdoor way into college for their kid. That fraud makes the old “affirmitive Action” law seem not so bad even though it still wronged those who deserved acceptance into college.

in most large corporate CEO positions, the person being hired is qualified (has experience that qualify for the job) and when shown to be incompetent is terminated. Such a CEO will also be swept away if his administration is shown to be corrupt. So, Lynn got hired by an person who got fired for allowing a horrific scandal to occur on his watch; so Lynn is to be given a pass for a similar scandal? Lynn had no qualifications for the job, but had the political connections to get hired; has shown himself to be incompetent. One thing, he is… Read more »

The BOT can’t even find a decent president in over a year. What makes you think they are competent enough to find a strong AD candidate? We are witnessing the start of a bad era for USC Athletics. We might have a couple of good seasons here or there, but we will not see a program that can consistently compete on the national level until major positive change is done at the leadership level.

I don’t know that I would go so far as your statement suggests, perhaps the BOT have found many “decent president” candidates
and they, Presidential Candidates, may have demurred viewing USC as a Toxic environment and unwilling to subordinate themselves to the whims of an Elitist Board of Trustees without direction or meaningful objectives which counter the Philosophy of the candidate. Just something to consider, as optics’s don’t always reflect realism.

I love this time of year because there are no sports to interfere with my seeing the Lake Elsinore poppies and riding beach waves. And also getting in a little writing. Everybody has a book inside them (although some are more interesting than others).

The poppies this year are amazing to see. Those hills look beautiful this year.

So in corporate America are the CEO’s qualifications that they were able to catch a football thrown to them by the finest quarterbacks available? That’s like being the guy who takes the winning proposal to the post office and getting credit for winning the job.
What else does Swann have to offer? I don’t know of any another fortune 500 companies that hired a clown as CEO- oh maybe McDonald’s?
The way things are going at USC these days ten years might be longer than the school has to offer.

So how long does the leader of a golf club last?

At any other school, he would have been gone already. Here? He somehow will stay on. It’s incredible to think that anyone who has this level of corruption and underperformance under their watch could even be considered to retain his their job.
