At this point, IMO, Swann needs to punt. As Cowherd said, SC Football is a mess. By punt, I mean Clay must now fix it. Personally, I do not see how 2019 is redeemable. But, the problem should be Clay’s to solve.

After Swann’s Dec 5th decision I stated he had just created a Chimera. If you didn’t already know, In Greek lore a Chimera is made of various animal and serpent parts. One definition is: “unreal creature of imagination”. If you want a 21st century version of a Chimera, look no further than USC football. Next season is going to be an unmitigated disaster. Sad, so sad. The mantra of the misinformed a year ago was “10-2”. This year’s mantra is “12th ranked recruiting class”. Both are meaningless and ignore the fundamental problems. To hang your hat on the “my offense”… Read more »

Thanks Scipio—I learned a new word tonight, chimera. What an erudite bunch we are here at TDB.

Wow, I know the NFL is a copycat league, but this is rediculous. To hire a guy with no prior NFL experience and a short , unsuccessful college coaching record, because he mentored a few QB’s, means The inmates are running the asylum. To get one of the few head coaching gigs because someone is in love with the “idea” of you is laughable. He has Sean McVay to thank for this. I really think that he initially had every intention , based on his choices at the time, to coach at USC, but then this opportunity with the Cardinals… Read more »

The head coach speaks: “Trojans coach Clay Helton said Tuesday that he was happy to see Kingsbury get an NFL job.

“Any time you get an opportunity to be an NFL head coach, it is special,” Helton said. “He is a talented coach, that’s why we brought him here. I wish him nothing but the best.”

Helton said the Trojans “will spend the upcoming weeks finding the best possible fit for USC and our program.”

They should already have a list of potential candidates to interview. They need the coaching staff finalized at least a couple of weeks before national signing day. If Arizona could poach KK in a day, I think a week should be enough time for the dynamic duo to act.

I am really upset, we still have no announcement from USC. Is this all supposed to be a secret? Question now is where do they go from here, W. Kentucky just hired a new OC so that is probably out. I even wonder if since this all started if the great minds in the athletic department considered they may need to hire someone else and started thinking about who and making any contacts. This event shows there is a serious lack of business sense in athletic department and with Helton still hanging around who is going to want to come… Read more »

The snowflakes running the show at SC would reject Schiano as quickly as those at Tenn. did.

Who are good candidates to take over for KK? I’m open to any ideas even crazy ones. Let’s get someone who is a bright young mind that wants to be at SC.

Did Bevell gets picked up yet? Matt Canada? Spavital from WVU? Norm Chow? Major Applewhite?

Its all about quick moves without due diligence. Think back. Every time with recent hires it has been….got to get somebody to save the recruiting class right away…..need certainty……need to get the program stable…….etc. etc. So we end up with a long string of hiring disasters. Best advice for Swann….take your time. All USC fans know that Helton is not taking us anywhere. If you are going to keep him do your due diligence and find an upcoming coordinator that wants the job….views it as a step up and might serve as a replacement for you know who in a… Read more »

No. It is about hiring people who have done the job you are hiring them for at some point in the past. The last thing we need is to give some hotshot OC his first head coach job a year from now. In a way, it is good KK is going to eliminate the likelihood of that half-assed approach.

The divine comedy continues! lol…

Not firing Helton and thinking you can patchwork a fix for one of College football’s most storied programs is
either Blind Hubris or just plain ol’ dumb.

Either way Clay Helton needs help…Divine intervention at this point.

FIGHT ON!

So if the Cardinals had to buy out KK — does that give SC some money to go after 2 high quality coaches? Maybe that was Swann’s “plan” all along :-).

Only had a $150K buyout.

They can’t even handle hiring an OC. Lets just wait for the new president. If a new president puts up with this mess then its time to focus on volleyball for a long long time. If the new president knows what he/she is doing there will be a long line of folks on unemployment from USC.

Both Swann and Helton were totally played by KK and his agent. They used USC as leverage while they continued to talk to NFL. It was easy to do as USC was so desperate to do something that could be construed as positive when Swann decided to keep Helton for whatever reason. Swann is the total fool here as CH is just a pawn in the whole negotiation. What is CH going to say to Swann once he realized he still had a job? Nada. USC just went to a 4 win season and will be the butt of all… Read more »

We can all relax by remembering that Clay Helton had a “plan” in place two days before KK was fired at TT. I can’t wait to see that amazing plan put into action.

Helton should be able to find someone capable of replacing KK. There are good OCs at the college ranks available for the right price as well as ones who were just fired by NFL teams. He needs to move quickly and find the best candidate.

I hope CH doesn’t promote Drevno to Asst. Offensive Coordinator. That would mean CH will have his hands in the cookie jar
and another long season.

KK is gone to cardinals. It’s all over everywhere on the radio. Now what? What’s the plan?

Once again, we are not good and certainly not boring. USC stays in the news.

If KK goes to the NFL and succeeds, would KK be considered part of CH’s coaching tree? 😉😉

I saw a list recently that showed something like 24 Top-100 recruits have left the program under Helton. Absolutely unreal. I think that has to be some kind of
NCAA record.

As was previously written, at best this Kingsbury carpetbagger would have been at SC for one year only, implementing a new system. What then after he left?– The Trojans revert back to their traditional run-pass ways? Things in life usually work out for the best, so begone with you Mr. Honesty.

Rich Cimini Espn wrote an interesting article about Rhule and Kk. Pretty much saying it wouldn’t end up good for the Jets. I believe Sam will go the path and in 5 years be on his way to being a Rivers, Rodgers types of vet stars. Looking back then KK will only be a side note in his development if indeed Kk ends there. Where ever KK goes NY,AZ or as a head coach it will be for a TT like record. If he actually does stick with his commit he will have 1-2 years of fame at USC ,then… Read more »

Replying to my own post, but Knowing KK and his agent we should know better than to bite on any early reports involving this guy. He’s almost certain to play any interest of the Jets in him against AZ to get a better deal, if he’s going anywhere at all. Only this time, he doesn’t have a Lynn-Swann-sized sucker to play, so he’d better lift his game.

Report was 2 hours ago on AZCentral/USA Today that he is in Zonieland. He may stay with SC, may be the Head Coach a year from now. Who knows?

Faith, family and football seems to work for Dabo. Difference is, he knows football and how to coach it.

True but he went through a few seasons early on where his teams did struggle. Since 2011, his teams have been solid every year. Helton can be exactly like this if he starts learning how to manage and hire good coordinators and let them do their jobs.
