As the article say, yeah, once they got the right coach, the benefits USC can provide gives it unlimited national championship opportunities. How many natties do you think PC could have won if he stayed at USC? How many more would McKay have collected had he said no to Tampa Bay? There are very fortunate Universities out there like Alabama ND & Ohio St. and Penn St. where their HCs stayed a long time. Yep your right Allen. What keeps the USC football program from being higher ranked are the administrators keeping the program down with their own agendas-beliefs.

SC can thank Pete Carroll for that No. 6 rating. After not winning a game against Notre Dame for 13 years until 1996 and losing 8 in a row to sucla until 1999 probably placed SC out of the Top-10 at that point.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have lost their luster over the decades, but they won the national championship in 1958 and 1960. In 1961, as the defending champions, they met John McKay’s Trojans as a 2-touchdown favorite, but SC scored 2 touchdowns in the final minutes to pull within 35-34. McKay, of course, went for 2-points to win it, but the pass failed. Still, this game was the turning point in McKay’s career, and the next year he won the national championship. My feeling is the last decade has moved us down a notch or two. Voters probably were looking at the most recent memory and not the entire record of teams.
