USC Needs To Put Stanford To Rest In Palo Alto

USC (-9.5) at Stanford

When: Saturday, 4:30 p.m.

Where: Stanford Stadium (Palo Alto)

TV/radio: Ch. 7/AM 790

Records: USC 1-0; Stanford 1-0

USC Update: The Trojans showed a preview of the team they want to be in the season-opening, 66-14 win over Rice. The offense was clicking and moving along at a rapid pace as USC rarely bothered to huddle between plays. And the defense did what coordinator Alex Grinch values most: created turnovers. Four picks, to be precise, three returned for TDs. So all in all, a successful day for USC. … QB Caleb Williams’ 86.3% completion percentage against Rice was the highest among USC QBs with at least 20 attempts in a game since Matt Barkley in 2012. … The one new injured player to be aware of is RB Raleek Brown. The freshman rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter and rode a cart off the field after the game with a bag of ice around the injured right leg, but has been practicing and might play. … Saturday’s game against the Cardinal will be a revenge match for RB Austin Jones, who spent the first three years of his career at Stanford before transferring to USC this off-season.

Stanford Update: The Cardinal opened its season with a thorough, 41-10 win over Colgate. RB E.J. Smith had a career-high 118 rushing yards and two TDs in the victory, while QB Tanner McKee threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, both to receiver Michael Wilson. … The one area where Stanford struggled was in ball security, losing three fumbles while McKee threw a pick. … Stanford won last year’s game against USC 42-28 and has won the last two games in the series played at Stanford Stadium.
