The further along I see the Coliseum construction progress, the more I keep thinking the Scholarship Tower is a (no pun intended) big mistake. We’re basically plunking a six-story building down in the middle of a stadium. Judging by the seats they left in place when they did their demo for the Tower, there are going to be a significant number of fans on game day who have that building prominently in their field of vision while they watch the game. The Tower will obscure those fans’ view of large swaths of fans sitting on the opposite side of the… Read more »

Why don’t we all just let this Coliseum thing play out?

Literally hundreds of responsible USC people and many respected planners and advisors negotiated this deal over many years to benefit USC as much as possible, within the constraints of USC’s non-fee simple property interest and dozens of other roadblocks, some purely financial.

When it all shakes out, there will be a huge public verdict on how everything really worked. Until then, I don’t think any of us really know what to expect. I sure like what they did with the new scoreboards. Those suckers are awesome.

Well, I kinda did let it play out. But everything I said about it is about my eyeballs looking right at it on the live cam. We can see the building footprint and height right now. Sometimes financial interests win out over fan interests — and guess what — that has happened more often than not in recent years as it becomes harder and harder for the average Joe to go enjoy live sports. Money wins out, and that’s just life. For those that enjoy the game from the tower, good for them! I would rather be on the other… Read more »

It will be the guys in the tower who are largely paying for this Coliseum redo. Nothing was ever gonna get done with just regular ticket sale revenue. Keeping the Coliseum just the way it was with new seats had already been done before, probably twice. I’ve heard nothing but griping from USC people about the Coliseum for years. Now that change is finally here, it’s still not good enough. If only USC could have decided to spend $2.5 billion on property they only lease and manage, maybe everyone could have been happy.

True, but you’re making my point. Big money is winning out, and that’s just life. Screaming about it is like screaming at the sun for going down at night. But that doesn’t mean it’s not sad for the average alum who just wants to take his kid to a game and feel a sense of community with 90,000 other screaming fans. I’m not even sure I’d want to be in the tower. Our firm had a box at the Staples Center for a while, and most of us didn’t love that. You are up too high and you feel removed… Read more »

This was by far the BIGGEST recruiting week(end) of the year for our Trojans, and hopefully things went swimmingly. And as far as I can tell, there were no widereceivers there this weekend. The big fish this weekend was the SJB duo of Chris Steele and TE Jude Wolfe. There was also a lot of chatter about LB/DE Laiatu Latu, a 4 star out of Sacramento.

I can’t help joking. And let me say I have a lot of respect for Dan. He did a great job reporting on the Todd McNair trial. I listened intently to every one of his very thorough reports. At the end, I would have guaranteed that McNair would absolutely win millionzzzzz of dollars. Guaranteed it.

A few days later, the jury returned an overwhelmingly negative verdict denying McNair even one penny. Thank God a jury has nothing to do with Pili and the other DLs. Hah. I believe Dan! grin

The sports community has had and does have a lot of characters. I’m hitting the age in life where unfortunately some of those characters have left us.
Yes he was Dan on the spot at court house.I get a kick out of him and Kealy, the generations that separate them make for a colorful report. As for Pili and his poly brothers someone is judging their condition, and passing changes.

A svelte 340. Love it. There were pics posted last Friday on twitter of the team at the beach for a bbq. One was of the defensive line guys and they looked sturdy to say the least. But Brandon wasn’t what I’d call trim or cut. As a matter of fact he was the only one who wouldn’t take off his shirt.

1) Per Joey Kaufman (OC Register) — Former USC point guard Jordan McLaughlin (set USC’s single-season record with 281 assists last season) has agreed to join the Brooklyn Nets’ summer league team. He is also expected to receive a training camp invitation.

2) USC shooting guard Elijah Stewart has contracted with the Indiana Pacers, giving him a chance to make the roster if he impresses in summer league.

Jordan Schultz (Yahoo Sports) on De’Anthony Melton — Houston got a legit top-20 talent at No. 46 in 20-year-old USC combo man De’Anthony Melton, who recorded 5.1 assists per 40 minutes. Melton attacks the paint and uses his near 6-9 wingspan to his advantage as a rebounder and defender. A stellar athlete, he should be a functional NBA player immediately.

Allen Wallace

USC’ PF Chimezie Metu (6-11, 225, Lawndale) taken at #49 by the San Antonio Spurs. “A dunker, a good shot blocker.” Inconsistency with his motor hurt him most, but his talent, footwork, and touch are undeniable.

So both Trojans expected to be taken end up in Texas. First time since 2009 that USC has had two players selected in the NBA draft.

Allen Wallace

it was a huge schmuck move by Metu and cost USC an obvious shot at winning the whole thing.

The NBA obviously wasn’t impressed with his desertion of the team and according to Don McClean on the Pac-12 Network, Metu didn’t really do anything for the Pros in his pre-draft workouts, which are now so extensive, to counterbalance the over-riding perception that he needs a lot of work on his motor. Aside from that, Metu was way too talented to slip all the way to #49.

USC PG/SG De’Anthony Melton (6-2, 195, 6’8″ wingspan, Encino Crespi Carmelite) was finally picked in the 2nd round (#46) by the Houston Rockets. A defensive specialist. Not a great shooter, but is an up-tempo, versatile athlete who can get to the rim. Very disruptive on defense. Nice combo guard, Can score, pass, defend (multiple positions) — and rebound very well.

Dollars would in all likelihood commit to USC now if the Trojans wanted him to. He’s on USC slow-play for now, even though USC is very comfortable with taking early commits and switching over to other prospects later, if necessary.

Clay is very honest about his priorities with recruits. You’re right. If Clay opened a spot for him he’d take it in a heartbeat, and perhaps down the road it’ll happen. Countless stories from recruits and their parents about his forthrightness in recruiting. I can’t remember hearing complaints from parents or kids about this staff.

Allen, what is the reason why USC hasn’t landed the best OL recruits? Helton does well at almost every other position.

Allen Wallace

I can’t answer that for sure. But I think it has to do with emphasis and proper targets. Why we lost that Mater Dei kid late to UCLA — I have no idea. But overall, there could be a lot of reasons from Callaway, to strategy, to emphasis. Last year the word was the west lacked good prospects and USC was content to sit back for the 2018-2019 class. And remember, USC went super hard after that big-timer in Ohio, who ended up choosing CLEM, leading me to believe he was never an L.A. kind of guy. I would call… Read more »

October 8, 2015. Seems like quite a while ago. At least in terms of college football. But that was the last time our Trojans lost at home. Not a bad stream. Will we extend it through this season?

Allen Wallace

While Helton has been unreal at home — his problem is at away or neutral site games, where he has lost a whopping ten games in just 2 1/2 seasons to STAN (2), ND (2), Oregon, Wisconsin, Alabama, Utah, Washington State and Ohio State.

USC’s away schedule in 2018 looks a little tougher to me than at home with the Trojans visiting STAN, TEXAS, ARIZ, UTAH, ORE ST and UCLA. September will be wild.

I just read the prognostications for top Pac-12 players and note that Washington is loaded on both sidles of the ball. Now I see why they are favored to win the North and probably will be favored to beat the South in the title game. Hope the South’s representative is SC.

One of my kids close friends just went to a summer football camp at UW. This kid will be a preferred walk on there. He is huge, 6’5” and 270. Country strong, barrel chested since 2nd grade. I asked him how it went and his reply was “I am so small”. Welcome to big time football kid.

Interesting. Everyone, except Trojan fans, believes UW has a little more talent than USC now. It shows up in all the player recog lists and team prognostications. With preferred walk-ons at UW such as you mentioned, it seems to back up UW’s current stature as the Pac-12 favorite. I do believe that USC will win a relatively weak Pac-12 South and end up playing UW for the title. It seems like Petersen will get his shot at revenge over losing in Seattle to the Trojans and Darnold in 2016. Jake Browning looked really bad in that game for the Huskies.… Read more »

Daniels is already a better deep ball thrower than Sears or Fink. He’s got the touch, anticipation and confidence for those throws. He’s already more skilled than those two from the info that is leaking out. Makes it look easy. Should be much more of an “outlier” than Barkley ever turned out to be and Barkley never had a great long ball, either in length or accuracy. I don’t think we’re gonna hear much negative stuff about JT, period. The storyline may start shifting to how Sears and Fink are taking this, since neither looked good in the spring and… Read more »

To me, it’s imperative that Fink and Sears don’t quit and push each other to the end. I’d be terribly disappointed if I heard, thought or saw that either of them quit because of the hype and didn’t fight through till the end of camp. Whoever ends up starter, they’ll be better off having been pushed to their limit.

Allen, I completely agree with you about Cosby. I still feel shocked when I think about it like reading your comment. However, strong rumors had been there for decades about Spacey. I completely whiffed on Kevin Spacey. Way over my head. I think of him in movies like L.A. Confidential, The Usual Suspects and Glengarry Glen Ross. Soccer….I have never gotten the sport. I see it takes stamina and dexterity to kick around the ball. But the lack of scoring is what freezes me from getting into it. All that effort, up and down the field, and nothing to show for it. Soccer should have a gimmick such as football has, where effort can at least net you 3 points with a field goal. And raise and widen the net to enhance scoring.

Of course, soccer traditionalists would never make these changes. So they will never rope me into their game.

Allen Wallace
Member

I don’t have the soccer chip. I remember being forced to play it in junior high PE, while I was also playing Pop Warner, which I loved. Soccer was just so ridiculously hard with relatively no payoff. I still remember (for God knows what reason) the only goal I ever scored in a game at school. It was like magic and I couldn’t believe it had gone in at the corner of the net and somehow by the goalie.

True soccer followers have an ability to withstand unending frustration and boredom that eludes me.

They could get rid of the off-sides penalty which would open up the scoring potential by a lot. They would never agree to that however. All of the unnecessary flopping is what ruins it for me. It’s worse than the NBA.

Get rid of offsides and make some sort of rule like an over and back in basketball. There is nothing worse than watching a team retreat on offense over and over again kicking backward to their own goalie and having announcers talk about their great possession of the ball.
