Just read an article by Ryan calling for Helton’s job. Really gutsy.

Was anyone else as pissed that CH chose to sit on the ball before the half with 1:51 on the clock and all three timeouts? He finally learns to save his timeouts and then he does nothing with them, even knowing that UCLA was going to get the ball first in the second half? I guess that 3-point halftime lead was commanding enough that CH didn’t want to go to the two-minute drill. Maybe he just knows our team, we were bound to screw that up somehow and end up behind at the half.

Assuming he’s gone in a week, where does Helton go from here? At 46 he has a lot of coaching ahead of him. He does have to learn to be a better offensive guy. Does he get that by being head coach and learning from a good OC? Or does he take a demotion, become a position coach under a great OC at a great program? It will be interesting to see where he goes after SC.

Who really cares. Seriously. I really won’t think about him once he is let go.

I find it somewhat interesting to see where coaches go, where they fail, where they succeed. In another 10 years, Helton could be a pretty good coach somewhere or in a broadcast booth.

Maybe broadcast booth with his always sunny in Philadelphia speak. I just don’t think the guy could lead termites to eat wood. I think he is totally inept as a HC. Worse than He Who Came Before Pete Carroll.

He can join Les Miles at Kansas. They both have a lot in common. Neither one knows how to manage the game clock.

What a mess, Clay Helton signed an extension to 2023 in February according to more than one article! How much will it cost to buy him out? I doubt Helton would resign under pressure and I am sure his attorney would not recommend it. If we are stuck with him, he needs to hire two new coordinators as we can tell that he is no “BOMAR” in calling plays or setting up and offensive system, NOT SCHEME! There is a big difference. Watch Alabama run the same play over and over and be successful. All SC does is call plays,… Read more »

I just read Plashke’s article. I hope he got it right. Per Plashke, SC must terminate Helton. Such an article after Plashke did his best to save Helton’s job in an article written earlier in the week is remarkable. My guess is Plashke figured Helton could beat UCLA and deserved another year. When he saw SC lose to the pathetic Bruins (UCLA is a bad team) in the manner it did (SC is at least 21 points better), he realized just how bad a coach Clay is. So, Clay has lost the fan base, the football alumni, the entire national… Read more »

It has to be a matter of when not if Swann pulls the trigger. Give the seniors their day with Helton, then fire him in a week. It will give Swann another week to make contacts for his replacement.

Only 57,000 fans at the 100,000 seat Rose Bowl. College football was dead in L.A. in 2018. I bought a cheap ticket and walked onto the 40 yard line, there were so many good seats available…;Maybe 20,000 of the 57,000 were SC fans, so it did not feel like an “away” game, and perhaps that is why there was very little razzing or interaction between the fans. That and the fact the game was meaningless. It was the sleepiest crowd I have ever seen….The game was dramatic, interesting and fun. No one left until the very last minute when Daniel’s… Read more »

With all due respect to the three-win Bruins, this wasn’t so much a football game as a portrait of a talented Trojans team in chaos.

I believe it was Brandon Pili that got the unsportsman like penalty. Helton did pull him off and chewed him out. Guess he doesn’t have the love for Pili like he does Toa.

GT, I was thinking the exact same thing.

Brandon Pili threw that punch because the players were not chewed out for stuff like that for the past three years. They instead received warm embraces, “teaching” words, and were sent right back out onto the field. Chewing Pili out now in what is your probable last stand is wasted energy. Helton set the stage for that punch with his “daddy” coaching style, and once you go that route, you’re stuck with it.
