The Pre-Season Athletic 130

Chris Vannini (The Athletic)  —  College football is back, and so is The Athletic 130.

Something to keep in mind: As the season goes on, these rankings will be heavily based on results. Expect a lot of fluctuation early as games get going. If you think your team is too low and another is too high right now, that could change quickly. Preseason rankings are a semi-educated guess, but a guess nonetheless. Moving forward, narrow losses to better teams might not result in a drop. Sometimes, close wins against a bad team could result in a drop, depending on what other teams do. It’s all relative.

This is subjective. Advanced statistical rankings systems are plentiful, and though they may be part of the research, it’s not the only factor. This isn’t the Playoff committee, either.

So starting at 39 is fair to me. After stinking up college football last year we can now see how the shining USC football program is not so shiny right now. It is tough to come back and get to the top, but it is even harder to get to the top and stay there. I genuinely have no idea what to expect from this football team. There has been so much rah rah and kool aid served I have quit reading what they say. Let it begin against Fresno, when the talking all stops, and action takes over.

Alfa asked me a couple of weeks ago, how is it that SC has the 6th ranked talent in the nation (this is per Dan Weber) and is rated about 40th? Virtually every neutral site in the nation (virtually all commentators) has SC between 40 and 50 in the country – the worst performance given the talent of any team in the country. Why? Obviously, a large part is Clay, who, based on past performance, has shown himself to be to worst HC in the Pac and among the worst in the Power 5. The second problem is implementing change.… Read more »

Sobering analysis RJJ and I fear you may be correct. The QB position is a quandry for us. I finished reading the SI article about all the young QB’s in college football with Trevor Howard from Cartersville, GA leading Clemson to last years dominating defeat of Bama in the Championship Game. When JT Daniels and Howard were in High School, they were rated as #1 and #1A. However, I think we ended up with the QB who plateaued at Mater Dei and just doesn’t have enough of the tools for the speed of the college game, especially as the trends… Read more »
