The Case Against Clay Helton

Ryan Phillips (thebiglead.com)  —  USC should fire Clay Helton. It’s as simple as that after years of missteps and ridiculous self-inflicted wounds that have sent the Trojans reeling into mediocrity. If USC president Carol Folt and new athletic director Mike Bohn want to oversee a top-level football program, they need to find a top-level head coach. Attaching themselves to Helton for another year would be a monumental mistake that could bury the program for years.

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman wrote a piece on USC and Helton on Wednesday in which he reports Folt and Bohn have both warmed to Helton and may wind up retaining him. First off, Bruce? Take a few days off for Thanksgiving buddy. You’re a phenomenal writer and reporter, you’ve earned a break for the holiday. Second, if he’s right, Folt and Bohn are leading USC in the wrong direction.

Helton has USC at 8-4 this year, despite a loaded roster and an outstanding young quarterback in Kedon Slovis. Some have defended him by claiming the Trojans have dealt with a rash of injuries. That may be true, but they also dealt with ton of injuries during a 5-7 campaign last season and that was used as a reason to retain him for this year. That can’t be an excuse every damn season, especially when every football team deals with major injuries.

Helton has been the full-time head coach for four years and he’s never lost fewer than three games despite all the inherent advantages coaching at USC brings. He won the Rose Bowl at the conclusion of the 2016 season and won a Pac-12 title in 2017, but with Sam Darnold at quarterback, both of those results felt a bit hollow. It felt like Darnold willed USC to both of those accomplishments.

The Trojans opened the 2016 campaign getting shellacked by Alabama 52-6, and Ohio State hammered them 24-7 in the Cotton Bowl to end the 2017 season. USC has consistently failed to show up for big games under Helton. That was never more obvious than during the team’s 56-24 blowout loss to Oregon a few weeks ago. If the Trojans had won that game, they’d have clinched a spot in the Pac-12 title game by now.

Helton took over as USC’s interim head coach during the 2015 season after Steve Sarkisian’s departure. Since then he’s 39-21 overall and 31-12 in the Pac-12 (he also won the Las Vegas Bowl as the interim coach in 2013). Neither of those records is acceptable at USC. You can’t average three conference losses a season in the Pac-12 and hope to be considered a big-time program.

Since taking over, Helton is 1-4 against Notre Dame, and 4-8 against top 10 teams. A key mark of good coaches is how well they prepare their teams for big games. Helton has largely failed in that department, especially when the team plays away from its home stadium.

A common knock on Helton is the lack of intensity during USC’s practices. There’s very little live tackling and a lot of down time. That’s not the way to build up a tough, intense football team that can go into hostile environments and consistently perform. The team is also wildly undisciplined and is routinely among the most penalized squads in the nation. Penalties and discipline were a huge part of Helton’s offseason focus and the team currently ranks — checks notes… — 124th nationally in penalties after being 123rd last season. Bang up job, Clay.

This season USC lost at Washington and at Notre Dame, while also inexplicably dropping an overtime game against an incredibly average BYU team. Then, of course, there was the Oregon massacre. That’s an unacceptable resume given the talent available to Helton.

After last season, fans clamored for Helton to replace defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast and special teams coach John Baxter after their units had under-performed for years. Helton retained both, and the defense and special teams have been a disaster this season again. He knows and trusts Pendergast and Baxter, having worked with them for years, so he’s been hesitant to kick them to the curb. That’s a ridiculous stance. Neither should currently have a job at USC after how poorly their units have performed over the past two seasons.

The fact that Helton hasn’t gotten rid of two bad coaches sooner is just more reason to believe he’ll never be a big-time college football coach.

As if Bohn and Folt need more reasons to get rid of Helton, consider recruiting. Granting Helton another reprieve will just lead to him being on the hot seat next season. All the discussions about his job security have led to legions of top recruits not even considering USC. Kids don’t want to commit to a coaching staff that may not be employed in a few months.

The Trojans have dominated recruiting on the west coast for years, but with Helton’s status up in the air, only two of California’s top 20 prospects committed to the Trojans. They wound up adding two more as receiver Bru McCoy and cornerback Chris Steele transferred in after not working out at their initial destinations.

The 2020 class is shaping up to be even more of a disaster. None of California’s top 20 prospects has committed to USC. Things aren’t getting better and they won’t as long as Helton is still employed. Fans don’t want him there and recruits won’t attach themselves to a guy who won’t be around.

Helton is a heck of a nice guy. He’s genuine, friendly and truly cares about his players. His kids aren’t just numbers on jerseys, they are family to him. That’s great and, honestly, it’s easy to like and root for a guy like that. But USC isn’t any old school and shouldn’t aim to just have a nice guy as its head football coach.

USC deserves better than the results Clay Helton has delivered. At this point, the only correct move is to make a change and aim higher.

Now that the Pac-12 South title is off the table, Bohn needs to make the most important decision and fire Clay.

For anyone who is bored out of their mind, here is an email I sent yesterday to Mike Bohn. I am sure he will never read it, but it made me feel better to send it! … Dear Mr. Bohn; I am a two-time graduate of USC, 1991 (undergrad) and 1999 (law school). I grew up watching USC Football as my sister attended USC, then my mom attended USC. USC has had down phases where it wasn’t seriously competing for national championships, but that has NEVER been for a lack of trying. It was a product of misses in coaching… Read more »

I sent a long email to Caruso 2 or 3 weeks ago asking him to consider UM for our head coach. Like you Rock, unless you get a detailed reply or phone call from the person, the long email I sent was an hour of finger exercise and nothing more. It did make me feel better for about a day.

Great email Rock. You laid out a cogent unemotional plea. Any reasonable person would have to give pause to what you said and respond accordingly. However, I have no confidence in Folt and anything she has her fingers in. Regardless of what SC does or doesn’t do, I believe it will be a glass half full at best. Besides, as I have mentioned before, the same puppeteers are still pulling the strings behind Bohn and Folt’s back. I hope I am wrong. Fight On

This is the second year in Helton’s tenure when we held a victory over the South’s representative in the Pac-12 Title Game (and last time we held a victory over BOTH participants in that game (Washington, Colorado)), yet we were outside looking in.

Washington went on to the Playoff that year. If Utah beats Oregon and makes it into the Playoff, this will be the second year in Helton’s tenure where we held a victory over a Playoff team and yet did not even play in our conference title game.

Nothing says “wasting talent” and “inconsistency” quite like these truths.

The reason I like Whittingham and would love to have him come to USC is he has 8 four star players on the entire roster. The rest are 3* or less. Here he is in the talk about the playoffs. He gets an awful lot out of what he has to work with. I wonder what he could accomplish at USC.

Hope that Bohn realizes the history of the Helton situation. Helton has been HC for 4 years and with USC for 10 years. Helton has had his chance to try to bring USC back. Earlier, had supported Helton but lately with the recruiting going downhill and the adjustments not being made had to go with the removal fans. Helton has learned a lot in his tenure at USC. But it is time to move on to a new beginning and perhaps some new hope. If Bohn goes with Helton he is putting himself in danger to follow Swann’s footsteps. If… Read more »

Not really Mr. Walk-On. Clay Helton would be much more likely to say his Trojans all fought like warriors (especially Toa, the world’s best center) and he would get right back to work to fix the ongoing penalty/turnover problem as soon as feasible.

“We almost beat Notre Dame and played pretty great back there,” exclaimed the ever-ebullient Helton, aka, Mr. Moral Victory. “Good gracious! Faith, family and football, boys! LJ found one person that agrees with him. I do not think anyone has disputed what she says, in fact I think most everyone said it long before she did. Having a great football program should never take away and will not take away from the the scholastics. She enjoys mediocrity that is obvious. As I have said, it all take patience. If Helton returns a lot of us will simply put any expectations on the shelf and look for the same football as we have had in 2018 and 2019. When USC has 2 and 3 star players on scholarships, the coliseum is empty, and the football program cannot support the title 9 sports, watch the cry babies then complain how they cannot play soccer or softball because USC cannot afford it. Football is king, it has to have a winning culture to support everything else. A winning culture includes the ability to… Read more »

I’m afraid we’re doomed in the short term. With weak-minded support from those like LJ, you’d think fully mediocre 4-loss USC just missed the playoffs. Teams like OHIO ST, ALA, CLEM and GA are so far ahead of USC right now, the Trojans are just lucky BYU (oops!) isn’t on the schedule next year. As the talent drops, it’ll be strange to see USC losing games because of coaching plus talent, and not just coaching.

No way next years team, led by Clay, gets anywhere near the playoffs. And in 2021, thanks to his pathetic recruiting this year(and next year if he is still around) SC will fall dramatically. If you are OK with mediocrity, and getting blown out regularly by elite teams, please then support Helton

Hey LJ surely you jest. With the revolving portal and disenfranchised baby players, there’s no telling what the team will look like next season. You forget that the team looked pretty good when Sark left. Inconsistent coaching and poor evaluation of talent led to Max Browne as quarterback. Even if you give Helton that gaffe because of Browne’s press clippings you can’t get around the fact that Helton brought Sam in as a linebacker and Toa was in Helton’s own words one of the great loves of his life. Could it be Bohn is or has approached those 2 possibly 3-coaches whom in their opinion would be worth Helton’s buyout and try to strike an agreement and if not we get Hugs back another year?
Seems if they had absolutely no interest at all to seek a new HC, they would have announced Helton’s return already. If after this Saturday’s Utah win, they don’t announce Helton’s return a few days later, then that could be a good indication they are talking seriously (fingers crossed) to someone? HOF19, We will find out shortly. It is patently obvious that Clay is NOT a championship caliber coach. If Clay is kept, the administration is telling us that SC will no longer field championship caliber football teams. They will be competitive and occasionally win the Pac 12, but the days of SC as an elite football program will be nothing more than a memory. I will then remember the past fondly and move on to Baylor as the team I follow.

I have been having this thought . When full the LA Coliseum looks quite large . But when a stadium keeps having empty seats to me it looks somehow larger ……and emptier .The top management of this University better get used to that “emptier looking stadium ” feeling if they keep Helton >>>>>>>> FACT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It just doesn’t make any sense why the administration wouldn’t strive for sold-out USC football games in the coliseum. Because it is USC football, if the football team isn’t winning most if not all its games, as it is (and has been expected) for decades), people don’t show up and that certainly isn’t any secret (Duh). But when you raise the ticket prices and have a HC who doesn’t know how to win the big games, you are clueless as to what the administration is thinking unless they expect a miracle to happen?

It’s sort of beyond whether they care about what their fans want — but more like do they care about the program’s success at all? There is no football reason to retain Clay Helton that we know about. The only one I can even contemplate is Urban Meyer said he would be our coach if we deferred his entry to next year to let him take a longer break. That would then be a tough call. But that’s it. And I doubt that would happen.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. And here’s to a new USC dynasty (a mini one would do!) in the not-too-far-off future, led by a worthy new coach who truly understands the expectations at USC and has the talent and will to live up to them.

John, Allen, and my friends here TDB, may your Thanksgiving day be blessed with family and friends and may we all be thankful for the new coach coming to USC, whoever it is.

The fan base is united against the retention of Clay. If your goal is to alienate your fan base, retaining Clay is the answer. If they do that, I think I will buy Baylor season tickets.
