The Bohn Case…

Adam Maya (SI.com)  —  Mike Bohn is still expected to be USC’s next athletic director. The reason he hasn’t just yet has to do with who could be its next football coach.

Bohn has not signed a deal with USC because of strong resistance from high-ranking members of the administration over Urban Meyer being offered the head coaching job should the university part ways with Clay Helton, sources told SI. While that stance is said to have played a part in multiple ADs declining USC, the matter came to a head with Bohn only after he agreed to leave his current post at Cincinnati.

Discussions between USC President Carol Folt and Bohn continued Tuesday in an effort to resolve the situation, with the longtime AD likely headed west after being assured he will have autonomy over the Trojans’ coaching situation. An announcement for Bohn’s hire could still come this week.

Bohn is hardly alone in wanting to pursue Meyer, as several boosters have been adamant about their desire to land the former Ohio State and Florida coach. The latter’s efforts could also impact Helton’s current status, per sources.

For weeks, the administration’s working plan has been to have a new AD decide on the football coach at the end of the regular season. Sources said several disgruntled boosters and at least one prominent member of the school’s Board of Trustees have pushed for Helton to be ousted this weekend if USC loses at Arizona State.

That pressure was initially applied toward Folt and interim athletic director Dave Roberts following the BYU loss in September. The contingent only grew bigger and louder this past weekend after seeing the team humiliated by Oregon coupled with Florida State firing Willie Taggart.

The boosters’ urgency stems from wanting the university to be able to openly negotiate with Meyer immediately rather than in late November. Preliminary discussions between the two sides commenced weeks ago, with many prominent boosters making it clear they’ll support a market-setting offer for the three-time national champion, according to multiple sources.

Meyer, who’s been working in Los Angeles this fall as a college football analyst for Fox Sports, recently purchased a home in the South Bay.

I’m not a fan of Urban, but if he were to be the head coach at USC you could basically guarantee to sell out games at this brand new $300M+ football stadium and a better season record to boot. Yes, USC would consider it as selling their soul to the devil, but since the BOD is money-focused, they could use him to boost The Program for 2 years, then let him go. He would be a huge fundraising event speaker, too. With that said, four AD candidates wanted the option to discuss the USC job with UM, but were told… Read more »

that’s exactly what I did this year. i bought tix on stubhub in the exact same row as my season seats would’ve been, without paying the committee fee or having to sell extra seats at a loss. that being said, if the new ad fires steve lopes, cancels the uc davis game and hires a non-helton type head coach, i’ll jump right back in and re-up indefinitely

I will say this >>>>> This head coach hire (whenever it happens the position needs to be open first ) might speak volumes of where this program is headed.

And I gotta say listening to many of my fellow SC fans I do sometimes get a sense of desperation .

And SC MUST be careful not to look desperate here …… It might make the job look less inviting !

I am still giving it less than 50-50 that Meyer ends up at SC . One of the main reasons is there just might be better run schools than SC for him to go to.

I hope y’all have as much fun reading this post as I do making it. This is great stuff. HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS ride on the next SC Coach. Let me repeat HUNDREDS of MIILLIONS. The SEC does not want Urban Meyer at SC. The Big 10 does not want Urban Meyer at SC. The ACC does not want Urban Meyer at SC. The Big 12 does not want Urban Meyer at SC. And, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS ride on this decision. Do not be naïve. Those conferences are now engaging in war to make certain Urban Meyer does not get the… Read more »

I should have said “…via the new AD selection process..”rather than “…the new AD…”

RJJ, You are correct. If USC football is allowed to return to glory as in the Pete Carroll era, the Power 5 conferences will feel the pain. As you may recall, Pete Carroll teams punished the SEC and the Big 10(12) whatever they want to be called. UM is capable of doing all that and the flavor of the month UO Ducks can go pound sand once again. A DOMINATE USC football team lifts all the Pac 12 up. Dr Folt does not fully realize this I am sure and as you stated. How could she, she is not from… Read more »

Watching the Bohn drama unfold is like watching the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier with its engines turned off drifting in the Pacific with the nation’s most advanced fighter, the F-35 Lightning II, circling overhead waiting for permission to land all the while running out of fuel.

Anything the BOT and SC leadership touches turns to SH*T.These people can’t do anything right, ther latest being Bohn and Meyer. If they openly tried to ruin our Football program they couldn’t be more effective than they have been so far.
If Helton is around next year because of a massive delay in finding a Qualified AD, everyone needs to boycott all athletic events, meetings, games, etc, so we can hit these bastards in the wallet, the only thing they understand.
When there are 30K at a football game, maybe then they will realize their behavior is unacceptable to the fan base.

I don’t understand why USC continues to treat their vaunted sports program like rock soup. Everyone feels they need to add something while ruining the broth. Watching this process is like watching a slow motion turtle race. Nothing ever seems to change..

One thing I like about the Mike Bohn hire is that he is a professional AD.
That is what he does for a living.
And the best hire to make is a professional who does that type of work.
The hiring of Mike Bohn and Urban Meyer should not be related.
A good leader hires the best person for the job.

Urban Meyer is the best person for the job. In this time, In this place. Unless we go back to 2001 and re-hire Pete Carroll.

Stop farting around, USC Administrators! hire Urban Meyer and lets get the football program turned around. If Carol Folt wants to turn SC into Berkeley South we would ignore her if the football program was getting better…. This is to her socialist advantage!
