Not Much News on DC Hunt

Ryan Kartje (LA Times)  —  A week after USC fired its defensive coordinator, the search for Clancy Pendergast’s replacement is in full swing.

USC coach Clay Helton has spoken with several possible candidates about the Trojans’ vacant defensive coordinator job, and “at least one” has been on campus to interview, according to a person familiar with the search.

As Helton searches for the right hire to rebuild a defense that fell to 78th nationally in points allowed last season, many of the candidates he’s reached out to have come from the NFL ranks, the person said.

Hiring a defensive coordinator from the NFL would hardly be a departure for Helton, who plucked Pendergast away from the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. But Pendergast’s defenses declined precipitously over four seasons at USC, finishing with a troubling Holiday Bowl defeat last Friday.

With the offseason in full swing, a coordinator hire is not believed to be imminent. But USC is expected to hire Pendergast’s successor before searching for a special-teams coach to replace John Baxter, who was also fired after the bowl game.

Rocky was good as a DC alright but being the current HC AT San Diego St and interviewing for the Syracuse HC job I don’t think he is setting his sights on DC’ing right now.

The SDSU defense ranked 6th this season and it is Rocky Long’s defense. He could also be feeling his Aztecs could beat USC so why take a demotion.

Unless USC pays him more than he makes at SDSU as a head coach, Rocky Long won’t leave a good job down there.

2 sentences I would LOVE Bohn to say to Clay Helton #1 >>>Clay meet your new DC Wade Phillips and #2 ……….. and by the way Clay …….. Wade is to make ALL decisions on how the defense practices !!!!! ( or in other words you are to let your Cordinators have a free hand ) …….FIGHT ON !!!!!

Hey Clay can have some more free time ……He will not even be required to attend the Gameplan meetings……….FIGHT ON !!!!!

This is not a negative thing, but Coach Huggs is more suited to lead the chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on the USC Campus. By letting the coordinators run things, the free time would allow Clay to follow his passion, the FCA.

While watching a number of players who should be Trojans commit elsewhere during the AA bowl, a question occurred to me. Assuming the virtually inevitable Alabama shellacking, how would all of you here feel about an ORGANIZED fan sit-out for the New Mexico game at the Coli next year? A “Day Without Fans” in return for the total disregard of fan sentiment in the last couple of years. It seems to me that the administration needs to know what their choices will look like in the future given the choices they have made. I believe in supporting the players, but… Read more »

Why would we want to hire Wade Phillips? He’s never coached at the college level as far as I know and he’s just too old.

Coached at the highest levels of the pros for how many decades?
Ideal call for the Trojans – maybe that is why there has been very little movement in the hiring process – couldn’t talk to him until today.
Knows tons of assistants including son who also can coach all facets of the game, not just defense.
Talk about the right call. Maybe he also found out that living in southern California is not so bad as so many of those other places he has worked.

I like Wade ……He has to reveal to us an ability to not just come up with great defensive schemes but at this level he MUST be able to teach. That is the only thing we gotta find out more about before we officially hire him .

Rams termination article in the morning Times mentions his teaching skills and mothering nature to the younger guys. He also fits the mold that it seems that Folt and Bohn are looking for.
Talk about something in the family genes!!!

We can all agree about the ailments USC football is suffering from. If AD Mike Bohn would take the hiring of a new DC position as seriously as it was in keeping GH here as OC, then we might have the beginnings of a football program building itself up in execution. If that were to happen, then support those factors by taking recruitment away from Helton and bring in an effective recruiter that can attract our recruitment base for goodness sake, even if that is all he does in the program. That in itself, with good coaching, would give us… Read more »

Was wondering if Jeff Fisher would take DC job, if offered. If he doesn’t get a NFL gig in the next few weeks, and he still has a place in LA, I would be good with that.

So you would want to add another softy to reinforce the softness of our current softy?! We need a tough and strong personality to knock Clay Helton out of the way and change the way we do things — not another “player’s coach.”

Well Tua will not be ALA’s qb when we get crushed at next season’s opener at Jerry World. He’s going pro.

So who has USC interviewed besides Joe Barry from the Rams.

Well my first post for this article whiffed, and people wonder why I don’t post. I guess I don’t like feeling like an outsider. That IS Old Trojans never die left. After rereading this I realized it said Helton was handling the hiring. I had read Bohn was taking the lead of this. The ad for the position has closed or is closing soon. But if Helton is doing the hiring then I can check back in a month or so. He’s still in mourning over losing Clancy. I haven’t seen anything about the special teams spot, which leads me… Read more »

Here is a novel idea, why doesn’t Helton look for a special teams coach at the same time. We know this team doesn’t spend any time recruiting.

I have heard Will Ferrell is interested in the job. He said, ” If Helton acts like a clown coach, then I’ve got it covered too. ” Bohn has considered the placement, but he’s not sure about whether or not the team is equity waver or if they have to pay union scale. And if Ferrell is acceptable, then Snoop (Dawg) is going to take special teams.
