No USC AAs at Mid-Season

5-1 Oregon rolls into the Coliseum on Nov. 2, after games against UW (this weekend) and WSU before the Trojans get a shot at rebuilding any momentum following evening contests against ARIZ and CU. Having lost two straight, the 3-3 Trojans sit in peril of once again falling to the losing side of the win/loss ledger, but I think USC will emerge victorious over both the Wildcats and the Buffaloes.

Before the season started, I predicted USC would go 8-4 in the reg season and lose to UW, ND, ORE and ASU. I’m sticking with my pre-season loss pick against the Ducks, even though the Trojans get them at home.

With seven weeks of the season down, The Athletic’s Mid-Season All-American team includes three ORE first-teamers (OT Penei Sewell, who chose the Ducks over the Trojans, TE Jacob Breeland, who was injured in last Saturday’s 45-3 demolition of CU, and is lost for the season, and S Jevon Holland. ORE also placed second-team AA OG Shane Lemieux on the team.

USC landed no players on either The Athletic’s first or second teams.

The Athletic’s college football writers across the country nominated players based on their performance in the first seven weeks, and a panel of editors selected the final teams.

I was at the AZ game last year. USC almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Although the refs called a lot of BS penalties, coaching decisions were illogical and almost designed to lose. The defense caused me to question if college football was scripted like pro wrestling.
We should win, but with this crew anything is possible.

I know our complaints sound redundant, just like Clay’s post game pressers, where he regurgitates the same nonsense, over and over. Speaking for myself, I will continue bitching until the incompetent buffoon is sent packing.
We need our new AD in place by Dec 1st, because like Rock said, no new AD is going to tie themselves to this loser.

Ugh. Following USC football is a chore right now. I still love the games, but this is the only message board I jump on because of the massive wave of negativity. It’s all legit, we need a change. It’s just not fun to talk about any longer (current coach). I don’t want the season to end, but it has gotten really long, very quickly.

Anyone else tired of talking about Clay and our shortcomings? I just don’t care to rehash the same garbage. I just want it gone.

Come on new AD, get here and get going!

We’re all tired of it. Even more tired of watching the same bad movie over and over. I’m trying to enjoy the games — I actually hope we can stay in it and get to the Pac-12 Title Game, even though I don’t really think we will. Just to have something to enjoy this season because off-seasons are so long.

I’m not worried about that meaning Clay will stay. After losses to BYU and ND, I have little doubt a change is coming no matter what. No AD is going to want to subscribe to this.

You described it perfectly. It does feel like chore or obligation. Like watching your kids terrible football team each weekend, but you have to support them. Its a nightmare.

I have been thinking the same thing. In my mind you can write this season off. CCH is good as gone and Swann is gone. Sooooo with the right AD and the right coach we can be three years away from contending for a natty. I believe that. Whomever the new AD and new coach will be you can be assured they will be on the same page and have a plan to resuscitate USC football. We are close to the dawn of a new day. The nightmare is almost over. Keep the faith baby!

At this point, every year we do the wrong thing basically sets us back two years from getting back in the national picture. Lynn Swann set us back two years keeping Clay, and our recruiting class was mediocre — not bad. It was bad on the lines. But if we have another bad class, and this one might be REALLY bad, you cannot expect even a good head coach to be in contention for a natty in three years. You’re going to have an awful bubble in the middle classes that has to go through the system and be burped… Read more »

Rock, you forgot about PC. His 2004 OL was mostly freshmen and sophs. Deuce Latui was a junior college transfer and anchor on that line,. It can and has been done right here at USC. An Urban Meyer type coach can do it, and I expect the new AD to hire someone just like that.

With the probability this coming recruiting class will be Helton’s worst effort if he is allowed to muck it up and then give him another year to ignore what all the other coaches do and lead the team to another 7-5 or 6-6 season? Just what purpose would this serve in benefiting anyone-anything?

I have done my best to swear off talking about how bad Helton is. Everything has been said and it is redundant, at least to me. I prefer to talk about the games, the players and anything besides how bad Helton is as a head coach. Every so often I get caught up and bash him again.

USC needs more than just a political survivor as Head Coach.
But a real coach who can run a team, make adjustments, teach discipline and
the game, hire good assistants, and have proven experience on the job.
Woud have taken Ed O and Wilcox over Helton.
The only thing that Helton has going for him is he is a nice guy.
But maybe that was needed to get through the sanctions.

What was the old saying by baseball manager Leo Deroucher: “Nice Guys Finish Last”. Helton may prove that again if he is allowed to stick around long enough to completely destroy Trojan Football.

I know we will beat University of Arizona….and I feel we will beat ASU, CU, UCLA, Cal, but I think we will have a very tough time with Oregon. I watched the Ore vs Cal game, and Ore just ran all over Cal. So we could finish 8-4, or if we beat Ore-9-3. I hope we at least get the PAC 12-South, and play UW for the PAC 12 Chsampionship… I feel that Slovis played well in the ND game, and the two bogus calls by the PAC 12 refs cost us the game: 1) Roughing the Passer, bogus, the… Read more »

No refs cost us the game. USC was not up to beating ND, period. Yes they have the talent to do it, they proved that, but that is all they have had for several years now.

Pittman, Tufele, Falo, Jackson and possibly one LB should all sue the school for career robbery. Not serious. Just frustrated like everyone else.

I think we all agree with Paul. I know I am tired of Helton and his staff. I agree with Allen – with an elite coach and this schedule this team is in the final 4. But, we lack an elite coach (or even a good one) and, as LJ correctly points out, he is all we have. Right now, the fan base has no enthusiasm for the team, the press has no enthusiasm and Clay is now in the process of destroying the talent base. Remember the scripture teaches: “A fool is always wise in his own eyes.”

It’s very scary. In an interview after the game Helton said, “This team is exactly where we want to be.” I couldn’t stomach it anymore. I had to completely shut out USC football for a while. So depressing.

At least my Packers are doing well

This is the same fool who last year declared after the AZ game “I can’t wait to see this team in November”
We all know how well that worked out. Clay will say anything to save his ass, including lying blatantly to the media and fan base.

Helton isn’t as much a fool as he is able to fool the USC administration. And that is really bad for all of us!

If there ever was a conference rolling out the red carpet in being swept these past 2/3 years, it is the PAC-12, no doubt about it. Chris Peterson should be the Nick Saban of this conference…. but he’s not proving it.

Right now whatever our record is at the end of the year, Helton is gone. Only way he stays is run the table and go 9-3 and win the Pac-12 title.

Rock2112

I think he needed to run the table starting last week. At this point, no respectable AD hire is going to hang his star on this coaching staff.

I think Helton needs 2-more losses to shove him out the door. Oregon, ASU and or maybe at CAL should do the trick for sure?

If Clay only loses to Oregon, then there is still a chance Clay will still win the Pac-12 South. So those rooting for losses to get rid of Clay probably need two like you said, and losing to two more Pac-12 teams pretty much means Utah or ASU will win the South. Me personally, I am rooting for us to run the table, win the Pac-12 Title Game, go to a decent bowl, and win it. Then let the chips fall. But I know that is not going to happen, so there is no harm in being a good Trojan… Read more »

I think CH will be gone anyway no matter what the final record is…he has negatively impacted recruiting for 2020 and 2021, the mediocre record last year and losses this year, and I am sure enough has been said by the fan base etc. to demand a change.

You can’t keep a head coach with the culture he has created at USC. A competent AD will fire him quickly.

With all the predictions of the total of losses we will endure again at the hands of perhaps the most incompetent coach in SC history, I am seeing the signs of another “wait ’til next year” season. If that is so I propose we change the words to” Fight On” to “Wait Long.”
It would go something like this:
Wait Long ’til next year
Them’s the words we always hear
Our Alma Mater Dear,
Has its head
Stuck up its rear
Wait Long for Ol’ SC
Wait long for victory
Wait Long chuckle

My 7 & 5 preseason prediction is looking better but I am not sure playing at Cal is winnable. 6 & 6 could easily happen. Playing at Colorado might be a struggle….

It is a shame to see how we’ve gone from dominating the conference in talent on AA teams to having nothing.

Golden Trojan

Allen I would add a loss to CU. Friday night road games are not kind in the P12. The road team loses 80% of the time. So that is 3 more loses. 6-6. sad

From here I see 7-5. We lose v. Oregon, and we split the games at ASU and at Cal. We’ll win one of the latter two games like a blind squirrel finding a nut.

By the end of the year, I’m hoping Michael Pittman will emerge as an AA. I think 8-4 is doable which means win out except for ORE.

I think your 8-4 is on the money. I also think Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops would be undefeated right now.

Meyer and Stoops might have won the BYU and ND games, but not UW.

TrojanMPA90

With Meyer and Stoops, we probably win UW game because they would have had the team ready even with a 3rd string QB.

Our Offensive Line would also be playing better which means we might not even of had the injured QB’s.

What makes you think Folt doesn’t want Meyer? Other than internet speculation I haven’t seen anything from Folt or anyone at SC saying Meyer was not an option. I was in the No Meyer camp earlier, but I am on board now. Unfortunately, I don’t think he is coming. I think he likes the TV gig, and just as importantly his wife is happy that he is doing the TV gig.

I keep hearing rumors from my Dad who has been part time faculty at the university for decades that Folt’s core liberal philosophy (not starting an argument, it’s just the way she has always been) is making it hard for her to reconcile an Urban Meyer hire.

I think it also depends on if Folt thinks she “owns” the school and can do what she wants with it or will the traditionalist’s on the BOT reign her in as to her perhaps wanting to remake the school in the image of Stanford or Cal or even an Ivy league school
